The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel
Ranked #11 of 47 Hotels in Hobart
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed in the soulless old section, complete with filthy hall carpets and 1980's decor. Staff were very nice, breakfast is good for this style of hotel. Boutique it isn't. It is advertised as the old wool store which gives one to think it has some heritage character - it doesn't. The rooms have adequate kitchen facilities, no views (at least not our room).

Room Tip: Stay in the new side.

Hi Chris L,

I am sorry that our property did not appeal to your tastes. With 242 suites we are certainly not a boutique hotel and do not market ourselves so - if you have got this impression from a travel guide or other advertising please let me know so I can investigate and update if necessary.

We are named "The Old Woolstore" purely because that's what we are! Many of our guests actuslly prefer to stay in hotel rooms or apartments in the heritage listed building, registered by the National Trust (which you refer to as 'souless'). Construction of the original wool storage facility was completed in 1897with the building re-opening in 1997 as a hotel. The exterior, saw-tooth roofline, a number of origninal windows and doors have all been maintained and several historic photographs and pieces of machinery adourn the hallways and public spaces. A wall constructued of convict-made bricks runs through our foyer, bar and courtyard. Our restaurant exists in what was once the old Bridge Inn, dating back to around 1845. The rooms themselves do not contain any historical features - as would be aparent from any image or advertisement.

Every effort is made to ensure all public areas are kept clean and tidy. Unfortunately guests do not always let us know when they have accidents- should you see any spills in future please pass on to our staff so we can arrange cleaning immediately.

We stayed in a room with a kitchenette for 4 nights. The room was big - had QS bed, lounge, table and chairs with a small balcony, as well as lots of hanging space and a washer/dryer in the bathroom. The bed was comfy with a range of pillows to try. The hot water ran out near the end of the second shower - after about 10 mins all up - but wasn't a big deal. The staff were friendly and having parking included was a bonus. Location was about 5 mins to the pier and the main shopping area. Great place to base yourself if you want to tour around the area.

Stayed here over night. Pros: very central location, can walk to Salamanca, Battery Point or into Hobart city centre, though not sure you would want to as the city centre is a dump. the apartment was clean, had every thing you needed, except did not include Wiifii included in price.
Cons: after paying $270 a night was considered a discounted rate. I think thats pretty expensive for what it was. Ontop of that they are charging an extra $5 a day for wiifii, which they didnt even have decent reception for, and have a disclaimer that states, its not their problem, well actually if you are charging for something , yes it is! We stayed in an apartment in Launceston at $200 a night with wiifii for free. In this day and age with everyone with smartphones laptops and tablets it should be standard in a hotel of this type.
Our apartmnet was two bedroom with the kids bedroom on the mezzanine floor above the lounge. To be perfectly frank if you have young kids I would not choose this hotel. There is no barrier from the end of the bed upstairsairs and the spiral staircase at the end of one of the bed, peer too far, and splat, they'll be face planted into the spiral staircase . On the other single bed they can lean over the head of the bed and the barrier that is there will do nothing to stop them falling splat at your feet as you watch telly below. The spiral staircase itself is a hazard, I know they are a space saver, but thats about the only positive thing to be said about them.
My overall assessment of this apartment was it was adequate for an overnight stay. Its staff were a bit dim and could do with some customer focused training.

Dear Rach041,

Thank-you for taking the time to write a review on The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel. All feedback is welcomed, reviewed by Management and actioned accordingly. We would like to offer the following responses:

It is great to hear that you found the apartment clean and this is testament to the hard work of our housekeeping department.

Prices for WiFi vary from Hotel to Hotel. Whilst The Old Woolstore’s WiFi isn’t free, at $5/24-hours it is amongst the cheapest in Hobart. Regarding the coverage, we would be very interested to know more details about the location where you were suffering poor reception (if you would be so kind we would appreciate an email to feedback@oldwoolstore.com.au) so we can further investigate. Our Reception is available 24-hours and we encourage guests to contact us any time with any issues, such as this- often they can be resolved with our assistance. Your complaint has been the first since a significant upgrade of our internet system and we have passed this feedback onto our administrator.

We offer both FLAT and LOFT/MEZZANINE style Two Bedroom Apartments. Our standard procedure is to advise guests at the time of booking (either by phone, email or online) that Two Bedroom Loft/Mezzanine Apartments are not suitable for young children (this is noted clearly on our website and images are also displayed). We have passed your comment onto our Reservations team who will ensure our internal procedures are reinforced. Our Flat Two Bedroom Apartments are very suitable for young children, and on request our Reception team (24-hours) can offer room-moves where available.

Again, thank you for your review.

Stayed 2 nights at the Old wool store apartments. Found the description "immaculate" somewhat exaggerated. Expectations were high as the concept appealed. The apartment was clean and roomy. Satisfactory menu both breakfast and dinner. Staff were very friendly. A brisk healthy walk to the centre of town. We were lucky. We managed to get parking on site. Did not think it was value for money

Room Tip: Not really

Dear geoffdavis55,

Thank you for taking the timr to write a review of our hotel, we are pleased you found your apartment to be clean and roomy.

Whilst we can't always gaurantee parking onsite, we do ALWAYS offer complimentary parking for our in-house guests- whether this be in our main or over-flow car parks or at the nearby Market Place (24 hour, secure) car park. It is also worth noting that we have more car parking spaces than any other CBD hotel.

Geoff, given your comments are generally positive, I'd love the opportunity to discuss your experience with us further and also why you did not think your stay was value for money. This would help us continue to improve our services and facilities inline with guest demand and enhance our product for future guests. If you are happy to do so, please either phone the hotel (03 6235 5355) and ask for Kelly Luck, or email k.luck@oldwoolstore.com.au with your details and a suitable time to contact you and I'll me in touch.

Kind regards,
Kelly

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment in October. I was initially nervous when I saw it, as it is on a busy corner, however, there was no problem with traffic noise, and certainly no noise from the hallway as the bedroom was behind the main living areas - always fantastic, because I find hallway noise so disrupting to sleep. Unlike other reviewers, we had no issues with parking and thought the overflow carpark was nice and close. The staff were a little uninspired - at checkout they went to undercharge us by $60. My husband corrected this and didn't receive a thanks or smile in return. The apartment was spotlessly clean, and I think massive cudos to the housekeeping staff. It was a shame they don't supply a decent dishwasher tablet, sponges or some surface spray, as it would have been much easier for us to leave clean. We thou Byrne location was great especially for the price, and were happy to walk to the waterfront and Salamanca which was about a 10 minute scenic walk.

Thank you very much for the review MoniT76, appreciate your time!

Apologies that you found our staff 'a little unispired' on departure. We take customer service very seriously at our hotel - your feedback was discussed with the entire Front Office team at a recent meeting and the individual member spoken with sperately.

Dishwashing powder, a wash cloth and tea towel are provided in each apartment kitchen however surface sprays are not as each apartment is serviced daily by our Housekeeping team!

Kind regards,
