“Excellent museum -locals should be proud”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

Donation entry.
Museum which is located within an old building has been renovated to be comfortable and easy to navigate for the visitor however still retains it's historic character.
The same goes for the exhibits which are a mix of old and new, traditional and modern.
Very well designed and includes reading, animation/movies, touch/ interactive displays.
Believe any age or group can get something out for this, definitely suitable for children and even have these kids packs which are little tool belts which contain colouring pencils etc to help children engage in displays.
Had a comprehensive Antarctica display which I haven't seen in another Museum.
The art gallery is within the same building and is a good mix of art types and periods but does not overwhelm those which are not art crazy

Thoroughly enjoyed.

“Succeeds as both a museum and art gallery”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

We didn't know what to expect - is it mostly a museum or mostly art gallery? It turned to be a package of both that works quite nicely. There's a lot of mixing new and old, including the buildings and the displays that gives it an interesting character. There's naturally a big focus on things Tasmanian and that means exhibits you're not likely to see outside of Australia's smallest state. Parts are still sort of 'under construction' or maybe there's just always changes happening but we really enjoyed the four hours we spent there. The antarctic collection was especially comprehensive and includes video interviews with members of several expeditions. There's quite a bit of colonial art in the gallery, and portraits of Tasmanian aborigines are prominently featured. The modern art is very focused on local artists, as expected, and we found that a government plan allows twelve months repayments interest-free if you buy a local artist's work. The food in the restaurant was excellent and we'd happily recommend a trip to this museum and art gallery for all visitors to Hobart.

“Great effort and welcoming!”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

We are sure this museum will become very popular once they get their funding for expansion!
The staff were amazingly friendly and welcoming. We really enjoyed walking around.
Although you might want to bring a small bag instead of a backpack :) otherwise you will have to spend $3 for storage fee!
