My Grandfather I are visited the museum due to wanting to see the new renovations.
We were not disaapointed, building is gorgeous and displays clean and easy to follow and understand.
This is a great upgrade from the way it was before the renos.
One down side was they erased the convict display which I think is very important in Tasmanias history.

Perhaps on your next visit you might like to explore the new Our Changing Land exhibition on Level 1 of the Bond Store, which features many interesting objects and stories relating to Tasmania's convict history.

Thanks again for your positive comments, and please do come and visit us again.

“Great revamped museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

This museum has undergone a 30million revamp(Ithink), is more hands on for the kiddies, which makes life easier for the parents, plus it has more relevants exhibits for the younger ones. I have been lots of times previously but really enjoyed this time. I loved it as it was also open late on the Dark Mofo Friday night. Made it a little more exciting, with what was happening on the wharf

great museum!! fantastic coin and medal collection from first days to empirial Victorian medals and notes. staff are very knowledgable and friendly. the gift shop is not much chop and I love a gift shop so that was a bit sad. oh and the Tasmanian tiger display was fantastic only it made me a little melancholy but I guess that's a good thing because it may inspire people to get behind the plight of the Tasmanian devil

If you have nothing to do in Hobart, maybe worthwhile.
The nice thing is the extinct Tasmanian Tiger Exhibition.
If you're short on time, prefer the MONA.

“Great renovations and very interesting new exhibits”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

I have been coming to the TMAG since I was very young and I was pleased to see the renovations have kept the essential features of the museum, I particularly liked the "hanging" staircase complete with fottstep, it was very evocative. The new displays and exhibits are interesting and it is great to see a lot of particlarly tasmanian exhibits along with some old favourites and some outstanding international displays (the coin collection is fascinating)
We spent a very satisfactory couple of hours and will return as we did not see everything
