Owner description: The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is Australia's second-oldest established in 1818. These gardens are home to the largest collection of mature conifers in the Southern Hemisphere and it also has the only subantarctic plant house in the world. A great restaurant and cafe is available onsite and it is a wonderful place to visit all year round. Visit our website for more information.

Flowers and plants carpeted in a beautiful setting. Overlooking the water. Peaceful and serene. A lovely way to spend the day

“A beautiful way to spend an afternoon!”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

These gardens are varied and well kept, every section was beautiful in it's own way. We particularly loved the Japanese gardens and the oak collection. A really nice way to spend a sunny afternoon.

“Top Class Botanic Garden”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

The Royal Tassie Gardens are excellent! The collections are well organised and are very well presented. The site has a gentle to medium slope (overlooking the Derwent River) so it is hard to avoid a certain amount of stairs and up-and-down dale but the efforts are worth it! The sign posting and labelling of plants is a high point (not everything is labelled but most are). The cafe is very pleasant and the sandstone conservatory is a stand out. Entry is by gold coin donation. Well worth a casual stroll for an hour or so...

“A very pleasant experience”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

The historic Hobart Botanic Gardens continues to be very well managed and presented. The indigenous and Tasmanian plant displays (my particular interest) are excellent, as is the Subantarctic House and Conservatory. The food and drink at the cafe/restaurant are good quality (if not a little overpriced), but having a snack or a meal here on the balcony on a nice day is a very relaxing thing to do. The shop is well worth a browse. The only disappointing thing is the Gardens management, in their infinite wisdom, are ordering the very historic Merry-go-Round off the site - I would have thought that the many children and adults who were enjoying this activity when we were there (including my own teenagers), and what its presence does to reinforce the historical nature of the Gardens, suggests that is essential that it remains.

“Garden path”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

Always a good day out at the gardens. The reading room under the restaurant was a pleasing addition to the gardens. Food at the canteen was $$ 5 dollars for a bucket of chips. Cactus garden are closed.
