Owner description: The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is Australia's second-oldest established in 1818. These gardens are home to the largest collection of mature conifers in the Southern Hemisphere and it also has the only subantarctic plant house in the world. A great restaurant and cafe is available onsite and it is a wonderful place to visit all year round. Visit our website for more information.

“The best gardens in Australia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2012

These would have to be the most beautiful botanic gardens I have seen in my travels around Oz. So so much colour at the moment being spring. And Tasmania just has so many beautiful species that grow well. It's the first time I spent more than an hour in a garden. Could have spent even longer but they were closing at 5.30. 2 hours gave me enough time to breeze over everything but would have loved to have spent about half a day there. The place is definitely a feast for the senses, especially sight and smell. But with a sizeable herb garden taste can come into it too, though I am not sure if I was meant to lol.

My one disappointment is that the day I went the sub-antarctic plant house was closed due to a cooling system malfunction. Would have been good to see what actually survives that sort of inhospitable environment.

This is a must do activity if you're in Hobart.

We regretted not having more time to walk around and enjoy this place. The orchids were fully blossomed and the experience was awesome
