Fountainside Hotel
Ranked #7 of 47 Hotels in Hobart
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 13, 2014

The Fountainside is a semi-renovated mid-rise hotel on the edge of Downtown Hobart. It is within walking distance of the waterfront, Salamanca, and the harbor seafront restaurants.

Location advantages: it is convenient for day trips out of Hobart and within walking distance of the wharves/restaurants in Hobart.

Location disadvantage: it is located on a "roundabout" and noisy...even on the top
renovated floors. If you are a light sleeper, this is not the place for you. If you are a heavy sleeper, "have at it!". It is a good value for the money.

Breakfast is about AUD$11.80 and is sufficient to get your day started. The evening meals are adequate if you are too tired to go out, after a full day of exploration. The soup and salad bar are good; the main courses are nice and all in the low AU$20 range.

Parking can be a problem if you come back after 6 pm, but management will always find a parking place for your car.

Room Tip: Top floor renovated room is about the best you are going to get.

whilst a little dated, this is a terrific budget hotel with modern, refurbished clean rooms for a Hobart visit. Close to the dockside restaurants and CBD, free parking, inexpensive restaurant, free parking and good friendly service. highly recommend for 'mature' travellers seeking a relaxing visit.

I decided to stay at this hotel after reading other TripAdvisor reviews.

I found it to be a good quality hotel that provided value for money. The room was a good size, the staff pleasant and it was within a ten minute walk to the Constitution Dock. The hotel is situated at the intersection of some major roads but as my room was on the forth floor I didn’t find the noise from the traffic overly intrusive. However, light sleeper may find the traffic noise does affect them if they have a room on the lower floors.

I would be happy to stay there again.

A quick trip to Hobart had me book the Fountainside Hotel -after checking a bunch of hotels and reviews. The Fountainside came up above average, and the price was very reasonable. Easy choice; we ended up being very pleased with our pick.

Located 20 minutes from the airport, the hotel is well positioned for all that Hobart has to offer. Easy access to Botanical Gardens, Salamanca, Elizabeth Street Mall, the Cascade Brewery, etc.

The hotel itself is somewhat "dated", but not in a "dated way", if you know what I mean. "Classic" is perhaps the better word. Reception staff (Alison in particular) VERY friendly and approachable; Alison helped us out with directions, taxis and the like; rooms (we had 44) clean and spacious, all the mod cons available (internet at NO charge); bed nice and comfy. Tiny bit of road noise coming from the roundabout out of the front of the hotel, but nothing to lie awake at night about.

One thing that stuck out was the mini-bar. All the goodies are offered at "shop prices", which is refreshing for a change. We picked a beer out of the fridge for $2.50 a bottle. That IS definitely shop price. More hotels should do this; great service.

I loved the lift! It's an old clunker, with one big door, that just slams shut, and rolls with a wobble. The moves up and down are bumpy and noisy. I liked every ride in it! Great fun (seriously).

Brekky was super reasonable again, at about $12 per head. Hot and cold stuff, everything one needs to fill up in the morning.

Personal taste is the ultimate judge, and I bet there are people who will find things to complain and moan about. I'd go back in a flash for the personalised service, the cheap breakfast and the location of the place.

This hotel although not flashy to look at, is rated 4-5 stars. Although I can see that traffic can be an issue, we were on the 4th floor and looked out to the road. We heard some ambulances the first day but otherwise no issue. The window is well insulated anyway.

As for the rest, the room is large, tv also, bed super-comfortable, and bathroom fine with good shelving for a change. Also this is one of the few occasions on our travels that we have used the mini-bar daily because items were at shop prices. Free wifi made communication easy.
The desk service was friendly and homely food in the restaurant really tasty. We ate breakfasts and dinners here. More options for vegetarian would be appreciated. The hotel was an easy walk from the CBD and all events at the waterfront. We hired a car and always found a park. In all a very nice stay.

Friendly staff. Very close to salamanca market and battery point. Also close to airport. The minibar is at good value. The car park is a bit too small and seem it couldn't accommodate all customers during peak seasons. The bath room design is a bit strange where the shower water will splash out. Overall is great.

I can't understand the positive reviews of this hotel. This is the first time that Tripadvisor has let me down. I barely slept a wink all night because the traffic noise was so loud. I was on the first floor so whether this makes a difference I don't know but I booked months in advance for a weeknight and put a request in my booking to be given a quiet room and this was ignored. The woman on check in was abrupt and rude and even more so once I cancelled the night that I was supposed to be going back there for after my trip. The night back in Hobart I stayed at Hadley's which was cheaper, quieter and so much nicer. You can definitely do better than this.

Room Tip: If you can't be guaranteed high up, don't book.
