“A very good waterfront hotel, that is also a casino”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2012

We enjoyed a very nice tower room with a view of the harbor at Wrest Point. Like many casino hotels this one is an excellent value. It has a pretty waterfront location, but is a short bus ride out of the city center. The room was medium sized with quality wood furniture and modest art offerings, with a very good bed and linens. The small bathroom featured very good towels and fair toiletries. A minor maintenance issue with the room was handled instantly upon calling the front desk. TV was a small standard unit with minimum channels. Housekeeping and maintenance were very good. Low cost internet available. Breakfast buffet food and service was excellent. We had very good food and service at the revolving restaurant- also the most expensive meal of the 3 week trip. A pleasant stay and enough positives to rate a 4. (PX# 8)

I've been visiting Wrest Point for many years but my most recent visit was after a four year gap. My main bug bears are with the poor decor in the bedrooms and the shocking breakfast set-up. Let's start with the bedrooms. Dark heavy brocade curtains and dark heavy brocade bedspreads (unmatched). Thankfully, in the Tower rooms you have the distraction of the fantastic views - at a price. The set up at breakfast was not unlike a vignette of 'Fawlty Towers'. There is a grand looking buffet but the 'hot' food is at best, only warm and by the time you get it to the table it's cold. Not that it looks particularly edible anyway, on two mornings I lifted the lid of the poached eggs container to find one egg left and on another day I was unlucky enough to get a glimpse of what presented as scrambled eggs before they became incontinent. I didn't bother with the 'hot' breakfast after that. So, let's have a cup of tea...The set up for tea and coffee is hilarious. My conversation with the waitress went like this: me: "Can you tell me which button to press for water?" Waitress: "You put your cup under the stop button and then you press it". Me to waitress 5 minutes later: "I'm afraid the water is not hot in the urn". Waitress "It's because you need to heat the cups up first, so press the stop button, rinse the cups under the water and when they are warm you can fill them up". Unfortunately, even after following this suggestion, the tea remained lukewarm and tasted - well - quite peculiar but nothing like tea. From memory, the 'full breakfast' is quoted at $29. per person which I believe is an outlandish price for such poor quality. So, Mr. Catering Manager, please clean up your act: make sure your hot breakfast is hot and invest in a new urn which has clear labelling and provides HOT water.
Like many hotels, the Wrest Point's reputation rests squarely on the shoulders of its staff. Everywhere I went members of staff were friendly and very keen to help but that's nothing new at Wrest Point - many of the staff have been there for many years. This is a good hotel, if a little pricey and there is no argument that it needs much updating. Tired it may be but it's defintely not exhausted.

Paid a little extra to get a "Harbour View" room, thinking we'd be able to see the beautiful Hobart harbour. What you do get (from the 3rd floor in a 15 level hotel) is definitely a water view, with the spectacular Hobart harbour safely out of view about 90 degrees around (it's a circular hotel).
The room was a throwback to the 70s, with new carpet cleverly made to look 35 years old to blend in with the rest of the room's decor. To be fair, the tv had probably been updated in the 80s, I'd forgotten that they once made tvs that small! The bathroom, to our relief, had clearly been renovated recently, and was bright and modern. Curiously, the exhaust fan acted like a loudspeaker, we could hear a conversation from another room through it as clearly as if they were standing right next to us. Good thing we don't understand Japanese!
Service was at all times friendly and attentive, check in and out quick and efficient.

Stayed two nights in a waters edge room, great view.
Room was small, old... by any standard.
Got a great deal so really can't complain.
Friend stayed in the tower, paid much more . I would not stay there paying full rate.

I have to say that the hotel needs to be refurbished and bring it up to date. The carpet was smelling a little musty in the hallways and the room was very small as was the bathroom. I can say that the only good thing about staying there was the proffessionalism of the staff and the view. Management needs to realise that the hotel needs to be updated if they want people to stay there. I certainly will not be staying there again until they do and will not recommend it to anyone that might be asking about it.

Room Tip: Don't stay there at all.

Upon walking up stairs and then up hill and down dale over dirty, wet carpets and then via a lift, we finally reached our room in the art deco wing. They didn't have to do much to comply with the theme. Rooms are smallish and the bathrooms about ship cabin size. Available food and liquor is reasonably expensive and its too far to walk in all weathers to downtown Hobart. Would find better value elsewhere.

Room Tip: Find somewhere newer.

Stayed for two nights on the top floor overlooking the Derwent river. Convenient access to Hobart major places. Family friendly despite casino on the ground floor. Room was okay, not too modern nor dated.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor facing the river, you'll love the view.
