In Hobart for Mo Fo we were keen to try some of Hobart's restaurants. We had wonderful meals at Ethos, Smolt and Piccolo but sadly were disappointed by Garagistes. We queued with other out-of-towners in the afternoon sun at 5.30 and were lucky enough to get seats. We'd read about the menu online and so were surprised to find that we had only two options: a three course or a five course set menu. With two children in our party of six, we asked whether there were any other options and were told no. The foamy peas for entree were quite beautiful but they arrived over an hour later and the oysters we also ordered ( they were on a list of two additions) didn't arrive at all. The main dish was wagyu beef with a few dehydrated olives all placed carefully on one side of the plate. The flavors were disappointingly subtle and without contrast and dessert suffered from the same lack of substance and flavor. While the decor was stunning, Hobart has better places to eat!

Visited during the middle of MOFO. Due to them being very busy they had switched to a set menu, which on reflection was probably better as it steered us into trying dishes that we may not have ordered. All courses were fantastic, local produce was great. It was a little strange, given the commitment to local produce that 95% of the wine list was european.

I expect to be fed for 5 courses at $85. This underwhelming dining experience reeks of the sort of prententious foody experience and hype that give contemporary restaurants a bad name. Whats motivating the tasting size serves? The emperors new clothes come to mind. The food is so great? What food? If you could locate it on the plate it might be. The wine list is astromically priced, the markup on the beer and sake is incredible and it's noisy here. Is this the only restaurant in Australia where patrons going to and from the toilet can be seen from the street? Why is there a window to the rest room, why? Why? Why?

My friend and I shared a couple of plates between us, I must say the food was quite unusual tasting. The meal sizes were rather small and I could have gone another dish, but it was quite expensive. Even the wine list was not really to my liking as most wines were European and I was sad to see there was only one Tasmanian white on the list...seeing as Tasmania makes great wines, they didn't seem to want to showcase this therefore gave an air of snobbery and pretense.

We came for a three course meal. Food was presented beautifully but there was not enough support from staff for describing the dishes. In all it was a lovely evening.
