“Not much to look at”

Only some boundary walls to look at. Better off going to Richmond and visiting the Richmond Gaol, far more interesting.

“Not worth a visit”
Reviewed February 10, 2014

It has not got anything comparable to Port Arthur. They should not charge for the place. The history can be picked up from the given literature and inscriptions. Only foundations of the factory are there, but no buildings.

“Female factory womens prison hobart”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

This attraction featured a man and a women re-enacting life in the female factory which was a stark prison with only walls left in place . The story was what seemed like an hour long of standing in a hot prison yard . It could have been done in 15 minutes .Several people could not stand that long and left . Interesting but needlessly long

“DO NOT MISS!”
Reviewed February 6, 2014

Without a doubt, the highlight of my trip to Hobart. I visited in December, 2013, then returned less than a month later in January 2014, bringing along family & friends to this incredible site.

When people think of Australia's convict past, the mind generally shoots straight to the males stories at Port Arthur, Norfolk Island, etc. The tragic stories of the women in these times need to be told, & the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is an incredible insight into what happened to these women.

A big suggestion, make time to do the tour, "Her Story". This is run by the same people who do "Louisa's Walk", & is something I will never forget.

“Well worth visiting”
Reviewed February 3, 2014

We found the Cascades Female Factory well worth visiting. Our guide Tanya was full of interesting information and enthusiastic about sharing her considerable knowledge of the site with us. Even without the original buildings it was quite easy to understand the site history with our guide's explanations. The outline of the buildings within the main yard are very helpful in this context. Being able to also tour the matron's cottage is another reason to take the guided tour. Highly recommended.
