This is located right near the Cascade brewery and on the way to Mount Wellington. If visiting either or both of those this is a worthwhile stop. You can explore the grounds for free, or jump on one of the tours they offer. They do a general tour and a theatrical tour with actors called Her Story. We did the Her Story tour and it was great. The outer walls are really all that remain of the original female factory, so the actors really helped you gain a true appreciation of the history of the site.

At home we get a one-sided view of history. This fascinating visit provides a different perspective of how the female convicts fared when transported to Tasmania in Victorian times. In addition to the usual factual material, the trip featured a 40 minute drama called 'Her Story' which told of the hardship of a convict called 'Mary'. The male parts were played by a single actor, differentiating between them simply by change of accent and neckerchiefs.

The acting was superb and engrossing, despite a lack of stage or props, and the whole experience was surprisingly moving. I was ambivalent about going, but delighted that my wife insisted on the visit.

An affordable and informative tour on the attrosities of how female convicts were treated in 1828. The tour guide told some very interesting stories while the heritage of the area was interpreted in a sympathetic and educational way.

Her Story
Within the four walls of Yard One of the Cascades Female Factory, we were taken on a journey by two talented actors. Using only minimal costume changes and props, they told the story of convict #71 and her daily struggle for survival. The interactive performance was incredible and made me feel like I was there with her. This is not to be missed.
