“One of the best places to visit in Tassie”

We had a wonderful experience here!!! Even our 4 yr old enjoyed herself. The amazing guide made us feel as if we were actually there in the convict erra. The stories and hard facts are delivered in a truly fantastic, informative, moving ( I was holding back the tears) way. The stories were finished always on the positive by the guide. We visited Port Arthur but this visit was more educational for our children and ourselves. We were given a guided tour of the factory by a lovely person Hillery . Thanks for a lovely afternoon.

Previously visited Port Arthur we choose to visit the Cascasdes Female Factory. Worth the visit and the 11am tour which is acted out by two actors and audience in silenance as the rule of the factory was most moving and leaves a lasting impression just as Port Arthur. Rosie the tour guide was knowledgible and give you plenty of time before and after the tour to ask questions. Very close to the city easy to fit in for 2 hours and honours the female convicts of Tasmania and Australia.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed April 1, 2012

Historical site of female prison operating for many years during the convict area. It is not well known, and has just become part of the broader Port Arthr umberella. There is not alot of the actual buildings left, although the yard perimters and a cottage and artifacts are still there. The site is brought alive by fabulous guides and amazing stories and dramatisations. They leave you feeling you were there at the time. We experienced the 45 minute dramatisation of "Her Story" and were given a guided tour by Daniel, who was such a nice person and so informative. It was fantstic, informative, moving and helped me learn heaps about Tasmania's rich convict history.

“If you only do one thing to do with Tasmania's convict past, make it this one.”

"Her Story' was right up there with the very best historical site interpretation I have ever seen. The highly professional presentation of one convict woman's life brought the whole structure, of which little remains, to a potent imagined reality. My friends, in their early 20s, were captivated, and could not help but use the long-vanished doorways as indicated in the performance rather than cross plain grass as we followed along. We were there in bright summer sun, but the performance in the shadow of the walls, with looming Mt Wellington behind, conjured the dark reality of the inhumanity of the system expressed in many ways and not least in the environment of high stone boundaries and unrelieved cold and damp. Yet there were still glimpses of resistance and agency and hope - it was excellent.

“Make sure you see 'Her Story'”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

OK I will admit that this was on my list of 'Must Visit' sites in Hobart and from a genealogy point of view I was greatly impressed by the willingness of the staff to help and explain the significance of the site.

If at all possible time your visit to coincide with the performance of 'Her Story' as this helps understand the workings of the Female Factory.
