OK I will admit that this was on my list of 'Must Visit' sites in Hobart and from a genealogy point of view I was greatly impressed by the willingness of the staff to help and explain the significance of the site.

If at all possible time your visit to coincide with the performance of 'Her Story' as this helps understand the workings of the Female Factory.

We had a wonderful guide (Cassie) who was very knowledgeable, informative & enthusiastic. In terms of the actual site, there is not much remaining of the Female Factory so if you were to look at the site without a guide (which you can partially do) you would probably leave feeling a bit let down. However, the tour really brings the history to life. Not only did we learn about the site but also got background information relating to convict transportation, other convict sites & life back in Britain at the time as well as giving us an insite into the mindset of European people in the 18th & 19th centuries.
Well worth a visit!

I visited this site last week and it was quite fascinating. It is being slowly restored somewhat, now that it is owned by the Port Arthur site.
When we arrived, there was no specific tour as such, but for a minor fee of $5 per person, the two of us actually had a personal tour of the site with one of the ladies. Highly recommend you take a tour like this rather than walk around by yourself, as you need to hear the history in context of what you are seeing to truly understand the history of the site.
So glad this site has been opened to the public, definitely worth a visit.

We recently visited the Cascade Female Factory with friends who were visiting from Melbourne. We thought we should see the “female version” of convict history before visiting Port Arthur for the male perspective. Whilst the Female factory lacks the huge buildings you can visit at the Port Arthur site it makes up for that with a wonderful telling of the story of the life of female prisoners.

This presentation, called Herstory, tells the way female convicts were treated and what they endured in this terrible place. The two actors really presented the history in a convincing and believable way. It was so well done you would remember it forever.

We noticed there were guided heritage tours at 9.30am and 2pm but unfortunately time wouldn’t permit us to take either of them, though a site guide at the end of Herstory was available to answer our questions. It’s certainly a good place to visit especially if you thought convicts were only men and boys.

Yes a very interesting display by two people representing a female convict and the overseer and doctor, demonstrating the hardship and punishments the females had to endure at this site. I gained this information by attending the "Her Story" tour.
