“Saying thanks and goodbye”

Our meal was fantastic, the staff were efficient and pleasant. This is one our daughters favourite restaurants - and will now be one of mine and my husbands.

“Great food, Gentle friendly service, Class without pretence”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

We ate at this restaurant by chance on a beautiful evening in Hobart. A couple drinking wine at Parisian-style outdoor tables looked so comfortable and relaxed that we thought it was the place for us! The group of 4 who walked in just ahead of us were turned away as they didn't have a booking, so it didn't look good, but luck was on our side and we were offered a table at the little bar in the window, which meant we could watch the world go by...
We were a little embarrassed about our inappropriate footwear (we had walked quite a distance so wore runners and brought a change of shoes), but the manager was very friendly and reassured us that "Runners are fine, don't worry about changing") They weren't, if the attire of our fellow diners on a Thursday night was anything to go by! Our waitress was attentive without being intrusive, and brought bread/oil and a wine list immediately. We got good information about wine, and when we asked a couple of questions about the menu, I felt we were well advised. We ate the wonderful suckling pig, and really enjoyed delicious wine from all over the world. Coffee is excellent. The wine list is really interesting - there were wines from Italy, Austria, and Australia to choose from, amongst others I can't recall. The people beside us were groaning about some wonderful pasta they were eating, and everyone in the restaurant looked happy and as though they were enjoying their night. Surely this is the sign of a good resturant? We ate at 2 other higher-priced restaurants while in Hobart - Maldini at Salamanca Place, which I found noisy and generic - food fine but nothing special, and The Pumphouse, which had great food but was quite big and barn-like, however restaurant is the one I felt most comfortable in, and the overall night I enjoyed the most. Class without pretence.

“Needs Staff Changes”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

Very good food for which the kitchen needs congratulating. However the staff really let this place down. The floor manager was almost snobbish and at no time made us feel welcome. The wait staff were poorly trained with little knowledge of the menu. For a restaurant that could be one of Hobart's best definite improvement at front of house is needed. And $25 corkage is excessive

“Good food, bad service.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013

We had a nice meal, odd service though, kind of hurried and disorganised, the waitress made us feel about as welcome as a head old. Quite a traditional modern Italian menu offering. Pasta cooked about 2 minutes too long but still very nice. We didn't want to spend more money or time than we had to so didn't try dessert or coffee....

“Best in Tasmania?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013

Piccolo is certainly one of the top (3) restaurants in Hobart, if not Tasmania.
I've eaten here regularly and last weekend with friends (Piccolo virgins) was no exception. Warm, welcoming service, distinguished food - home cooked with effortless panache, and the addition of black plates (a few months already) is a touch of glamour. It is no more expensive than other restaurants in Hobart but the quality and experience is far superior.
The only criticism would be the charming, young waitress that served us was could not precisely answer a few questions (where the meat was from, how it was cooked) that highly discerning gastronomes ask; however the meals were plated so elegantly and the short rib so succulent she was easily forgiven. Desserts to die for.

Top of the recommendation to friends list.
