Gowrie Park Wilderness Village
Ranked #147 of 480 Specialty Lodging in Tasmania

Last week the Tasmanian A'van Club spent a wonderful extended weekend at Gowrie Park
Wilderness Village. All twenty five vans were on power and access to water.
Vans started to arrive from Wednesday and some stayed until Monday morning.
On Friday night forty six A'van members had a wonderful home cooked style meal at the
Wilderness Restaurant. All members agreed it was an amazing stay.
The review "Its not for campers" is totally inaccurate as the amenities and toilets were
spotlessly clean and stayed that way. We found the Managers polite, courteous and
professional. Payment by cash or card was available.

This complex is a work in progress by a very friendly enthusiastic young couple. It has a new amenities complex with 6 bathrooms with a toilet, just like home plus 2 toilets at one end. They were spotlessly clean all the time. It is on the site of the old hydro work depot and town. It also has several grassy camping spots scatterd around plus extensive backpacker accomadation being gradually converted from the old hydro workers accomadation. It has the potential to be a great alternative to the crowded Cradle Mountain facility. These people need to be encouraged for their vision.

We WERE going to camp at Gowrie Park Wilderness Village. I'm so glad we didn't.

It looked great on the website and in the brochures, and I cannot fault the location. It's a beautiful spot, and the proximity to Mt. Roland is hard to beat. Unfortunately not all was as it appeared.

We arrived, booked in at reception and spent 5-10 minutes looking around for a suitable campsite (the 'campground', if you could call it that, was merely a narrow grassy/rocky strip beside the motorhome parking area and beside a basketball court that's in need of serious TLC. We looked briefly at the amenities (which were actually quite new and modern) but were unsatisfied with the standard of cleanliness. The toilets and ensuites smelled of septic and mold, and the floors were gritty.

When we asked for a refund and told the managers we were moving on to Cradle Valley, they were rude and falsely accused us of using the amenities. Naturally we denied this; as we'd merely looked around, and didn't like what we saw (and smelt). Ironically it would have cost us $1 each to use the showers anyway, and we had no need of using the amenities. But do you think they believed us?

Our brief experience of Gowrie Park Wilderness Village was extremely negative and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I cannot comment on the standard of cabins, as I never experienced those. But I would steer WELL clear of this place if you're a camper. There are FAR BETTER places available in this region.

P.S. The managers never gave us a complete refund, they left us $5 short.

P.P.S. They 'prefer cash' payment and do not issue you with a receipt.
