Southern Ocean Lodge is an experience one should have, It is truly outstanding in every aspect.
Rooms, view, facilities, staff, food, drinks, tours etc.
The design is outstanding and so practical for the location. It looks expensive (and it is!) but you go there knowing that and it delivers.

Southern Ocean Lodge has a head start admittedly. Being on the absolutely wonderful Kangaroo Island (we saw so much wildlife, and the scenery is fabulous), and overlooking the glorious Southern Ocean is most definitely a good start (understatement). They have made the most of these benefits, and taken it a step (or ten) further. Our room was absolutely fabulous, the restaurant was top top class, and the overall individual attention was faultless. We absolutely loved it.

We stayed at this wonderful property for three nights, booking fairly last minute. We managed to get an Ocean Suite which was spacious, with a sunken lounge, en suite, it's own well-stocked bar & quality tea & coffee & so beautifully decorated, & of course that view!! We travelled by ferry & were greeted on arrival by the managers & a very welcome glass of champers - or two! The entrance hall is magnificent as are all the communal areas - dining room, deck, lounge, bar etc. The food is indescribably magnificent & we wanted to kidnap the chef - & his lovely wife! The staff really make this place special - yes there is the location which is private & spectacular. But the staff are just so pleasant & the first name approach is truly informal & what is required for real rest & recreation. The location is excellent & there are plenty of trips on offer - all included unless you want bespoke. We opted out of a couple, preferring instead to read & relax in the lodge & our suite, no problem. It's as private as you would wish. There are more seating areas than there are residents, so it's great for anniversaries, honeymoons or just for each other! All age groups amongst the residents. There were a couple of singles when we were there & plenty to occupy them, but in my opinion it isn't really a singles resort. The best thing about this place is that it is truly oozing with style, but it's an Aussie style - the best approach to relaxing in the world!! Not that I'm biased!

Room Tip: All the rooms have the same fantastic view. However the Ocean rooms are more spacious, & there a...

This is up with the best of any property I have stayed in anywhere around the globe!
Looks expensive, but is all inclusive from arrival on KI to departure, mini bar included. (unless you want heritage wines, or extra expeditions)
Staff are superb (knowledgeable and they obviously like working there), attention to detail outstanding, food is as good as anywhere else in Australia - especially as most of their ingredients are sourced locally (own garden, KI or Fleurieu peninsula) Rooms are extremely spacious, superb craftsmanship, and great views.
Sorry, I can't think of any more superlatives!!
Perhaps the only down side is that it is over an hours drive from Kingscote, more from the Dudley Peninsula, so to really do justice to the whole island, you must either travel a bit or spend a few days elsewhere on the eastern end. Perhaps do that first, because SOL is so special.
If you have the chance to stay here, grab it and I am sure you will love it.
And no, I don't work there!!!

Room Tip: If you are less than mobile ask for a room near the main block

Stayed here for 2 nights, not nearly long enough. This is as near perfect as anywhere I have stayed. The rooms, the view,food,staff,excursions-all were amazing. The attention to detail in the lodge was second to none. For anyone who thinks it is expensive remember it really is all inclusive-the transfer from the airport, all food and wine, all your excursions. If you can ony visit one place in Australia this should be it.

That over used phrase "words simply can't do justice" actually applies to my experience at the SOL. From the minute we were warmly greeted at the tiny Kingscote airport and ushered to a luxury van, offered fresh cool towels and water, we were off to a great start. Upon arriving at the hotel, we headed down a simple plank wood path flanked by a contemporary building. When the front door was opened up by a member of the staff - WOW - you were enwrapped in a widesweeping floor to ceiling view of the ocean afforded by the clean, modern rounded design of the Lodge interior. Our breath was taken away by the sheer beauty of the location of this high end eco-lodge situated atop a cliff on the south end of the island.

We had read all the reviews about the amazing food and were looking forward to sampling the cuisine. Lucky for us, we arrived just in time for lunch and true to what we had anticipated, the food was fantastic. Using the freshest local ingredients, breakfast, lunch and dinner were a foodie's dream and the creativity of the chef and his staff are to be applauded. The alcohol, champagne, wine and soft drink selection (much to the delight of my teenagers) is vast and bottomless. We were definitely spoiled with the offerings. The staff is fantastic - kudos to Sally and Yen who were our primary servers during our 3 days stay and who we missed when they had a day off. The entire staff was terrific - accomodating, welcoming and anxious to please.

Our rooms were modern and very comfortable and positioned on the property to take advantage of this truly unique spot on the island. The views were boundless and despite the rooms being in one long row descending from the common gathering and dining space, privacy is guaranteed due to the careful and thoughtful design of the Lodge. Though one has the option, no one locks their doors here and despite being from NYC, we were totally comfortable letting go of our usual locked up world.

We took many excursions offered by the Lodge and I highly recommend that if you go, take advantage of them - we came to see wildlife and boy did we ever. Kangaroos, wallabees, seals, ichidnas etc. Amazing natural wonders too - Admiral Arch, Remarkable Rocks etc. Be sure to avail yourself of some of these side trips. Kudos to Renee, Claire and Alastair for being our informative and fun guides along the way.

There are only 2 possible drawbacks to this terrific place - one, if you're a fitness junkie and you need a gym, the Lodge does not have one. That being said - it's nice to take a couple days off of the treadmill to enjoy this spot - take the Cliffside Walk, the nature Hike instead. Next, connectivity to the outside world via internet is spotty so be prepared for some frustration if you are hooked. They do have a guest office which does have reliable service.

My last hint - the spa looks amazing, but alas, it was fully booked during our 3 day stay. If you would like to avail yourself of a treatment - book ahead - do not wait until you arrive.

A once in a lifetime experience - probably...do I wish I could return - ABSOLUTELY!

We've just had 3 nights here and it's hard to describe just how good it is.

The thing for me that really worked so well was the organized tours that you opted out of, so, if you're too disorganized, busy or tired to organize anything, just do what they at and it is all fab. And it was. I'm not a tour person but the four things they sent me in in the 3 days I was there were, well, Perfect.
And so was the service, the ambiance, the food and everything.

Perfect.
