Waves and Wildlife Cottages

At first signting, the row of cabins on the ridge looked a little out-of-place (I guess I like cabins that are tucked away), but they are comfortable, well-designed, well-equipped, and spotlessly clean. The setting, at the top of an embankment overlooking beautiful Stokes Bay, is sublime. In the late afternoon, kangaroos were casually grazing in front of our cabin. The pictures on the website are not staged -- it was really like that both evenings that we were there. Sunsets were beautiful. Katja and Paul were great. We found them welcoming and helpful. Waves & Wildlife was one of the highlights of our 3-week trip.

Waves and Wildlife Cottages are located at Stokes Bay, on the Northern Coast of Kangaroo Island. We stayed there for three nights in July 2009. All aspects of the stay were excellent.

From each of the cottages, there is a magnificent view over Stokes Bay, green hills and grand cliffs. We simply loved the way these cottages were immersed with nature, and 'Waves and Wildlife' certainly summarised our experience here.

Surrounded by hundreds of beautiful cute Kangaroo Island Kangaroos for the whole day, Stokes Bay and Waves and Wildlife really was a paradise. Only 10mins from the cottages on the same property is a track over to magnificent jaw dropping cliffs, and the same distance on the other side - Stokes Bay beach - one of the best beaches in South Australia.

The beach is accessed via a rock tunnel - and once there - the most amazing white sand, as well as a natural sheltered rockpool awaits

Yes - the road in is gravel, however it is progressively being sealed and in a couple of years the road will be sealed to Waves and Wildlife. Even the unsealed roads in the area are pretty good, and Stokes Bay's central location on KI made for easy touring. The drive west to Western River Cove from Stokes Bay was very scenic and rewarding.

However, the highlight of our stay and time on KI was Paul's Place, a wildlife park run by the same people (Paul and Katja) who own and operate Waves and Wildlife. Literally a hands-on wildlife experience, with hundreds of species, both native wildlife and domestic farm animals. A must for anyone, especially families with small children - it is like KI's Noah's Ark of life!

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of our stay at Waves and Wildlife, and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who loves peace, quiet and beautiful scenery at the same time without having to relinquish the creature comforts. The Winter Special was great value-for-money, only costing $130 a night for 6 people. Would definitely stay here again!

My sister and I had a 3 night stay at W&W in June. There was only one other cabin in use as it was winter time so it felt very private. We arrived at dusk and were greeted by 40 or so kangaroos grazing in around the cottages with the sun setting in the background. Stunning!

The cottages are self contained - full kitchen with kitchenware, bedroom, bathroom, sitting area with TV and a heater. We found ours clean, new and tastefully decorated and it really felt like home for our few days on the island. Linens were provided, we had hot water and the bed was comfortable.

The road out to the cottage is only paved halfway but the unpaved portion is not too bad. We were quite comfortable driving there in our small rented car.

The cottages are located near to a cliff edge which looks over a pristine beach that can only be reached through a rock tunnel. We were tempted to stay at Stokes Bay the entire time but did end up doing some sightseeing on the island.

Searching for a very special accomodation on Kangaroo Island we found Waves and Wildlife cottages near Stokes Bay in the north of the island. There are 7 self-contained cottages, three of them one bedroom, four with two bedrooms. All cottages are equiped with a modern european style kitchen, sattelite-tv, cd, dvd, bathroom with shower. Due to electricity restrictions there is no air conditioning but a effective ceiling fan. All cottages are right on top on a cliff overlooking Stokes Bay and the hidden beach. The balconys offer a stunning view.

Waves and Wildlife are a 30km drive on well maintained dirt roads from the Playford highway. 4WD is recommended. There is a nearby camping site with a small restaurant but no shopping facilities. Fuel and cash are in Kingscote, a 1 hour drive away, IGA-Supermarket (not cheap!) in Parndana.

We loved it to be there, the silence, the new, clean cottages and especially the very lovely kangaroes in the evening just infront of our balcony. Without a A/C it's sometimes very hot at daytime but the variable doors and windows together with the fan make it tolerable in the evening.
