“Not as Much of a Tourist Trap as Expected”

In fact, it was quite educational and we learned, in short order, all we needed to know about opals and mining in order to be able to appreciate these gems.

The tour starts out with a short video and then a live demonstration of how opals are processed and turned into jewelry. The basic concepts of stone, doublet and triplet (the most critical information should one be interested in purchasing) were explained in such a manner that I still remember the differences and importance of each (unusual for me).

Then the tour goes through a "sample" part of an actual mine, now unused, and into demonstration rooms of a typical Coober Pedy underground home. Surprisingly, it was really interesting.

Of course, exit is through the shop. No pressure to buy and they were eager (doh!) to show examples of the doublets and triplets. All in all an excellent experience.

“Museum ???”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

It was nice being underground and looking at the living room, kitchen and bedroom, but for a museum it was rather small and I would say, they have more of a shop then a museum.

“Umoona Opal Mine and Museum”

We had a tour round the mine, museum, caretakers living area and then to the shop :) No pressure to buy, but I did. Lots of beautiful Opals, nice friendly knowledgable staff and a really nice set up. The guided tour of the actual mine and living area cost $10, we started with a 20 min video that tells you all about Coober Pedy and how and why 50% of residents choose to live 'underground'. Fascinating ! Then the tour guide took us down into the living area and them further down into the actual mine. He was very interesting, knew all about Coober Pedy as he had been a miner there for over 40 years . Highly recommended !

“Must see”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013

Coober Pedy is a must see place! It is extremely unique. The Ummona Opal Mine and Museum was really good. The displays were exellent and the jewellery was beautiful. The staff were friendly and honest. There was no preassure to buy anything and they were happy to talk. I could definitely reccomend the tour of the museum, it was great! I leart heaps. First we watched a short documentary about the creation of opal, then we went underground. We saw an old fashioned house and a modern house. We also visited a mine. There was even unmined opal in it! I had a great time and could defitiely reccomend it.

Fantastic museum - first class layout and quality. Great shop as well, got the most amazingingly beautiful, simple necklace there. Couldn't find a design like it in any other store in C.P.
The staff are lovely and very welcoming. No pressure to buy. Definitely worth visiting.
