In fact, it was quite educational and we learned, in short order, all we needed to know about opals and mining in order to be able to appreciate these gems.
The tour starts out with a short video and then a live demonstration of how opals are processed and turned into jewelry. The basic concepts of stone, doublet and triplet (the most critical information should one be interested in purchasing) were explained in such a manner that I still remember the differences and importance of each (unusual for me).
Then the tour goes through a "sample" part of an actual mine, now unused, and into demonstration rooms of a typical Coober Pedy underground home. Surprisingly, it was really interesting.
Of course, exit is through the shop. No pressure to buy and they were eager (doh!) to show examples of the doublets and triplets. All in all an excellent experience.
