The Underground Motel
Ranked #4 of 7 Hotels in Coober Pedy
Reviewed March 7, 2009

The underground motel in Coober Pedy greatly surpassed our expectations.
We didn't realise that no taxis existed in coober pedy or public transport and so we were shuttled around by the owners of the motel free of charge. We were picked up from the airport, taken back there when we left, and also taken into the town on numerous occasions.
The motel is about a 15 minute walk away from the town centre which isn't far but it was extremely hot when we visited in december and so without the owners help there's no way we could've got around and seen all the interesting lovely sights. The motel is ideal for people driving but i'm sure the lovely owners would do anything to accomodate anyone.
The double room we stayed in was a good size. It was clean and comfortable. I was a bit worried that i'd feel claustrophobic underground but i had no problems. We stayed in a room furthest away from the entrance and it still felt airy and light.
Breakfast was included with the rate and there was pleanty to choose from with cereals and bread. It was put out ready the previous night and as we were up early to go on tours (that the lovely lady advised us on and booked for us, Merv is excellent!) we had ours the night before. The kitchen had everything that we needed (microwave, cooker fridge lots of dishes etc )and we felt comfortable going there and making our own food.
We sat out on the patio a couple of nights and had a wonderful view of the stars. It's really nice with plenty of chairs and picnic areas.
Hopefully one day we'll go back to Coober Pedy and we'd definately stay at the Underground Motel again. It's extremely good value for money, walking distance from the town, quiet and relaxing, and actually underground, not like lots of other accomodation around the area. The lady (i feel really guilty for not remembering her name) who runs the motel with Mike, who i talked to through email to book the motel, couldn't have been anymore lovely or helpful.
The Underground Motel is definately the best place to stay in Coober Pedy and we'll never forget our visit.

What a fantastic motel! Lovely setting on a hillside overlooking town, excellent rooms, clean, comfortable and cool. Secure parking for your car as the motel is out of the main street. The verandah area at the front of the motel is a great place to sit with a glass of wine and watch the sunset.

The rooms (because they are underground) are unlike anything else, I had the best sleep in months because they are so dark and quiet once the light is off. Each room has a TV and it's own clean ensuite with shower and toilet.

The atmosphere is also quite intimate, as there are only 6 rooms in the motel with a shared kitchen (and 2 bigger suites on a lower level), so there is a great opportunity to meet and talk with other travellers.

Mike, the owner, is a great guy...pleasant and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. They also have an arrangement with the Pizza restaurant in the main street so you get a discount....the pizza place is that good, it's worth paying full price for anyway.

We loved our 2 night stay at the Underground Motel and would recommend it to anyone...we will definitely make the trek to Coober Pedy again to stay here.

We booked for two nights after reading reviews on Trip Advisor and we were completely satisfied with our accommodation.

The room we had, although average size, was clean, dust free and lovely and cool. We were able to use the internet at the hotel as it is a Wi-Fi Zone and on paying 4 dollars on my credit card, I was online for 1 hour, great in an outback area like Coober Pedy.

The staff were very helpful and helped me contact Merv Richards of Arid Zone Location Services as he was away on a tour. All together a most enjoyable stay and certainly one to remember for a long time to come.

After reading positive reviews on this motel, we decided to give it a go. We booked 2 nights through the hotel direct and requested a double suite. Booking was all made promptly and smoothly. On arrival we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite at no extra cost which was a great bonus. The suites are very very nice, sleeping underground is a unique experience and the staff here made your stay very pleasant. The host was very friendly/ approachable and even provided a detailed description of recommended sites and tours and places to eat around Coober pedy which was invaluable.
We were very impressed with the underground motel, we believe it deserves more than the 3 star rating it has!. Would highly recommend it and would stay here again for sure!.

Motel was easy to locate and reception on arrival was friendly. Rooms are average size but very clean and comfortable. The kitchen facilities are good and the overall feel is very homely. Staying underground is a unique experience and I would recomend this motel to others seeking well priced, clean, quiet accomodation in Coober Pedy.

I had a great time at the Underground Hotel.
Mike, who runs this hotel is a top host
as well as guide. He will direct you to the
most appropriate services in town and even
give you a lift ! He will even advise on tours.
I found his help to be 105% above my
expectations.

The hotel is immaculately clean. Everything
to the last detail. It is dust free, the rooms
are pleasant and the shower/kitchen facilities
are fantastic also.

Just make sure that if you do walk at night
you bring a torch as some of the streets
near by are quite dim at night.

Otherwize, enjoy your fantastic accomodation.
Sit outside and watch the landscape as it changes,
cook yourself a meal in the kitchen or have a yarn
with Mike who is guaranteed to give you the
"local view" on everything.

Thank you Mike ! And thank you Undeground Hotel
for making my stay at Coober Pedy EXCELLENT
in all respects.
