“A cool, quirky place to stay.”
Reviewed November 28, 2010

My partner and I spent two nights at Radeka's in a budget private room, which was 6 or so meters underground. The room was basic - a double bed, a small table and a chair with wood-paneled walls sporting Australia tourism posters - but cool, quiet and very dark at night. Needless to say, we slept really well! The bathrooms were clean but are located at ground level, so I wouldn't recommend an underground room here to anyone for whom stairs are a problem. The kitchen and common areas were tidy and generally well-maintained (although one of the refrigerators did freeze our food solid) and we found it easy to socialize with other guests at meal times. Laundry facilities and parking were adequate. The only negative I experienced was the myriad of signs telling guests what sorts of behaviors are prohibited, but I guess those must relate to negative experiences the management has had in the past. I would stay at Radeka's again if I ever return to this funky little town.

The staff were great & helpful. The rooms small but clean, we stayed in a supposed underground motel room. Unfortunately it wasn't really underground at all, so this was disappointing. The budget & backpackers rooms were underground. In hindsight to experience underground sleeping in a room with an en-suite we should have stayed somewhere else.

I say excellent. 5 Star. But it isnt a 5 star hotel, however it is a 5 star experience!

What a crazy place Coober Pedy is. wonderful time there - though we did go to a bar and some drunk local got a bit rough, then again that is what Coober is all about. Couldnt have picked a better place to stay - friendly, simple but just what you need. Some interesting sites around there too. Some were a bit of a tourist con but in general very happy to have visited.

Never slept underground since but would certainly go back!

I think this is the place to stay because supposedly it is the only place where you can truly stay underground. You walk down many steps to get to the budget rooms, which I highly recommend. Save luxury for another trip. It is very peaceful and not claustrophobic like I thought it might be. The ceilings are high and the air is flowing. My only complaint is that the bathrooms are upstairs so I didn't enjoy walking up a bunch of steps in the middle of the night to go to the toilet. I was really glad that I didn't stay in an underground dorm because they don't have doors!

It's been a while since I stayed at Radeka's, but I really wanted to write a review. I stayed in one of the motel rooms (above ground) and it was great. The staff were friendly and helpful and it is in an excellent location.

I lived in Coober Pedy for a while and had many friends and family come to visit and stay at a variety of places, those who stayed at Radeka's all had a great experience.

It's not that Ritz, but then, if you want the Ritz you should go to New York, not to Coober Pedy

Staying at the Radeka's was wonderful. Not only did we have a clean pleasant hotel with the added bonus of being "underground"; but we were treated more like true guests rather than paying customers. The close ties between the owners and their small excellent staff (Hi Rose! Hi Gary!) made it seem even more family like.

I arrived on a bus at about 5 am. Radeka's had sent a minibus to try to grab some tourists off ths bus who just wanted a room and somewhere to kip. My reaction was anti-tout, and instead I spent 90 mins at the bus terminus waiting for it to get light and go look for somewhere else. I rather wish I hadn't been so stubborn and just taken the minibus instead.

Yes, you can find places that are more plush (there's a bland 4 star place over the road), but Radeka's does have charm, and masses of other people seem to stay here - masses of backpackers and people with campervans. Virtually all the rooms are underground (and everyone coming to CP should stay in an underground room - it's part of the reason that tourists come to CP). Room was very clean, and bathroom was fine. Staff at reception are very helpful and definite characters - they don't do bland. They also run a 4-hour tour of the area which was good, as well as a night-time star-gazing trip (highly recommended). Having spent far too long wandering around town looking at various places to stay, here really does seem to be the best in town
