Riba's Underground Camping
Reviewed January 4, 2014

What else are you going to do in Coober Pedy, except stay underground?! Lovely neat and tidy little room (we were going to camp but my back was playing up so opted for a bed). Rick and Barb were lovely and welcoming.

We stayed 2 nights in our caravan, it looks all new, but has been here for many years. The facilities are clean, the washing machine is also lovely and clean, and we enjoyed being away from the town area. Only 4 km drive to town so nice and quiet out at Riba's. Rick was a nice bloke and friendly and the other young chap was also. Barb was not there during our stay so didn't get to meet her. After visiting the town and having a look around, we were very pleased we stayed at Riba's.

I have worked for several years in tourism and don't think I have come across anyone as rude as the host of this campsite. He swore at the 'bloody Europeans' on our mine tour and asked 'Do you even speak English?' before launching into a rant about how much he dislikes children. The underground camping area is like an echo chamber and every sound is magnified which is most unpleasant if anyone snores or there are any unsettled babies. We stayed in July and it was several degrees warmer underground but next time I'd opt for the cold!

What a great experience.... Hosts Rick and Barb have got the formula right here... Clean, tidy with good amenities and well priced. You must do the nightly mine tour.... Thanks folks, we'll be back...

This is my second trip to Riba's Underground camping, and I have to say that its not changed from 2006 to today 2013. Its a good place to stay, like the other reviews so far are spot on, good amenities, free BBQ cooking area, clean showers and toilets and if you pay the Tour you get underground or above ground camping free for the night ($22 tour per adult).

It was the second time i heard the information from the Tour from Rick, and he does it well.

NOTE: If you are wanting to finish the evening chatting with some wine or a cold beer (we are not talking about drunkeness and partying) after about 8/9pm this site is really not suited to you, this is because underground the noise travels throughout and disturbs others who appear to be wanting to sleep around that time. Even walking to the outside, the gravel makes a crunching noise which is impossible to avoide the noise, e.g. going to the toilet. We got asked by another couple that we were chatting too loud and could we either go outside or shut up and it wasnt even 11pm. We went outside doing the right thing, thinking this would be a solution, so that noise would not echo/travel like it does underground. But the owner Rick asked us that we were disturbing the above ground campers. Understandibly we thought as we were not at all drunk, this was a bit extreme and so we called it a night by 11pm. We were up at 5am for breaky before heading off, hence little alcohol.

Therefore if you are wanting to enjoy the evening, we from more than one experience here recommend another place to stay if you do not want to eat after the tour at 7pm and go straight to sleep ! possiblity the Backpackers Underground camping accomodation in Coober Pedy might be a better option. (our age 20-37yrs male & female group of 4).

Its cool to do something different and underground camping i for sure didnt do before. The couple who runs the place is a bit older and gives a tour every night through the mines. For only $5 so thats good. It was nice it was ok.

Slightly out of town but provides genuine underground camping experience. Great hospitality including mine tour given my Rick, great guy and experienced opal miner. Camping underground provides a cool temperature and peaceful atmosphere. Discount vouchers for the thriving metropolis of Coober Pedy provided upon check in. Clean bathroom, easy parking, don't forget your head torch.
