“An amazing experience!”
Reviewed February 28, 2014

So glad this was recommended to us as we were really impressed. Yes, the hard hats are so necessary! We thought we'd be in and out in around half an hour but we were there well over an hour. The Coober Pedy mining lifestyle and history is demonstrated and brought to life in a very realistic and enjoyable underground experience. Make the effort to go!

“Worth a tour”
Reviewed February 7, 2014

My daughter wanted to see the Old Timers mine so I tagged along. Really didn't think I would be that interested, thought I would be in and out in 10 minutes but we were in the for nearly 1 hour. Found it really interesting how they used to mine the opals and the conditions to which these people lived. Great place for a look would recommend. Thank god for hard hats

“Right to the heart of it all”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

To really understand opal mining and Coober Pedy, Old Timers is the key.
It is not a small place. It seems to go on and on and on, winding around in tunnels and shafts underground. You have to wear a hard hat and watch your feet and, if you are keen, you can crouch and crawl and weave in the old stone warrens just as the miners did working their way to yet another extension and another hope for a seam of precious colour. But there are easy routes through the tunnels for the less intrepid such as I, and enlightening displays of miner models in situ drilling into the rocks before placing explosives. One just has to pause and ponder how dark and lonely and dangerous a business it all was - and is. The tunnels wend their way to a terrific exhibition area with comprehensive narratives of mining history and equipment, lots of fascinating newspaper clippings and, mysteriously, a quaint collection of jars containing preserved insects and animals. Onwards underground and there are two whole, fully-furnished dugout dwellings to show the almost salubrious domestic worlds the miners and their families established in assorted opal heydays.
Finally, one comes out upon the shop with its wonderland of opals set and unset, opalised shells and fossils and even fun souvenirs for the kids. It's the complete Coober Pedy experience and, into the bargain, there are regular outdoor demonstrations of the blower machines which are key to the diggings.
It's altogether edifying and unforgettable.

“Interesting insight to early mining life in Coober Pedy”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

Self guided tour of a very old mine dating back to 1916. With a hard hat and mine map you explore unground mining life discovering mining scenes decked out with period scenes with dummies in costume to give you a stronger sense of life in Coober Pedy a century ago. Includes different aspects of mining + living in your diggings... even sleeping on your opal finds... Very worthwhile...

“Informative visit”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

Informative, self-paced visit exploring the life of an opal miner. The opal mine was hand dug in 1916. A nice cool escape from the heat and time to try and consider what life was like for those who dug there way to a fortune...or not!
$15 per adult we considered pretty good value.
