“Hell on Hindley Street”
Reviewed September 27, 2010

Stayed in a third floor room facing Hindley Street, on a Sunday night. The room was OK but the noise outside - all night! - was simply horrendous. Drunks and yobbos till about 2pm (and occasionally thereafter), and then, in no particular order, rubbish collectors, police cars (sirens wailing), trucks, unidentifiable vehicles that made more noise than a jumbo jet, street cleaners going one way down the street at 5am and then the other way at 6. And so on. It was a sleepless nightmare.

The other problem is the car park - secure, but with ridiculously tight parking spots and hardly any room to turn or manipulate vehicles. Unless you have a small sedan, forget it.

As I said, the room was OK, if slightly shabby. There was a comb (not ours!) under the bed, so perhaps the cleaning is under par as well.

All in all, you are better off staying in a motel in the suburbs - which are only a few minutes away in Adelaide anyway.

Dear Nelson-7

Please let me apologize for the breakdown in housekeeping (comb under the bed) as I am sure you can see and would agree that the great number of comments on this site and many others all suggest that our cleanliness is generally very good.

The noise issue from the street and suurounding business's is somthing we are working to try to remedy or at least minimize and have already taken many steps to achieve this. Unfortunately this is not simply fixed by double glazing and requires very much a multi faceted approach. We will continue to work to minimize the impact of inner city noise.

Again thank you for taking time to share your thoughts.

We stayed here for several nights recently in one of their "deluxe spa" rooms. All I can say is that sleeping area was clean but the bathroom is disgraceful. Tile are missing, chipped and cracked paint in the bath, filthy nozzle on the shower, mould in grouting. Unfortunately there were no other rooms available and we had prepaid so we were stuck there. This is a very basic hotel, we paid about $130 per night and worth about $80. Any renovations they claim were done were only very basic (furnishings looked ok). Beds are hard and pillows very cheap and thin. Sheets and towels are clean but getting worn. The only good thing I can say about here is that the staff are courteous and friendly and it is in a very convenient location. This is the first time I have been disappointed by a hotel and unless you are desperate or have very low standards in bathroom hygience do not stay here.

I was in Adelaide for several days and really enjoyed my stay at The Adelaide Paringa Hotel. The location is ideal - right in the heart of downtown, close to Rundle Mall, Chinatown, and great restaurants. Everything is within walking distance, which was really nice way to explore the city.

Even though you are downtown, it is a very quiet location. You get good value for your money.

Overall, I was very pleased with the level of service. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

This is a hotel in a traditional Austrilian building at the end of the main shopping street.
This is not state of the art hotel but it is in the centre, large airy rooms with high ceilings. It was noisey at night but to be this is to be expected if you are in centre of a city.

We booked this hotel because we wanted cheap accommodations in the Adelaide central business district. The location is ideal, with many shops and restaurants within walking distance. Very enjoyable. The hotel itself is a converted vintage office building, which leads to some interesting architectural features and sleeping room floor plans (not all bad, just curious). We visited in winter, and the air-leaking windows were a problem for both temperature control as well as noise penetration (heavy sleepers will do better here), but the room was comfortable. The rooms were clean but very spartan without extra attention spent on decor, but there was a mini-bar, complimentary tea/coffee, and the usual basic toiletries (soap, shampoo) and hairdryers provided in the bathrooms. The front desk is open limited hours, but the Miller Apartments right across the street cover for the Parenga 24/7 and so this was not a major problem (just curious, again). Hotel staff were very pleasant and eager to please. I'm saying that I would not recommend the hotel only because it was too spartan and a bit run-down for my taste; otherwise, it would be acceptable to stay here again.

Dear Divine Miss Maja

Thank you for taking the time to provide objective feedback on your recent stay at Adelaide Paringa. We greatly appreciate feedback, both positive and negative, it helps us to improve our business.
You mentioned on several occassions that you felt the room furnishings to be a little spartan, I note your point but would suggest that the room furnishings are superior to any other central city property in this price range. We have just completed putting new top quality beds in all rooms and we provide flat screen televisions and complimentary magazines to name just a few.
We are currently introducing some other options and hope to be at the stage of being able to offer lounge furniture to compliment the tables and chairs already provided.
Again thank you for taking the time to comment, and we would truly like to welcome you back to Paringa in the future.

This central hotel is in the thick of Adelaide nightlife, so prepare yourself for the sounds of happy people, drunk people and police sirens! Take earplugs and you will have a great night sleep. We stayed Saturday night, so Adelaide was buzzing.

Our 'Deluxe Queen Room' booking stated that there was 'fresh milk and plunger coffee'. No sign of that. No sign of a valance/ruffle on the bed either! The bathroom was basic and about as boutique as my grandmother. This 'boutique hotel' was far from the mark. Just a cheap city hotel with a facelift. But good value after a day of wine touring.

Dinner down the road at Woolshed Pub was a highlight. Best chips we have had in a while! But dreadful house wines! Parking was $12 a night subsidised by the hotel for the Wilson Parking building over the road.
Luckily we had two sets of earplugs, or this review would be very different. But just for a night we were satisfied.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback, we are always appreciate constructive comments. Let me apologize for the milk and coffeee plunger issue with the booking you made these should most definately have been in your room and I will certainly look into this.

Paringa is a very good value for money 3.5 star motel that also offers some additions you would not normally expect in a property of this style or price, brand new beds throughout, flat screen Televisions up market toiletries and comp magazines in the rooms just to name a few.

Inner city hotels will always be subject to a higher external ambient noise level especially when located close to an entertainment precinct, I congratulate you on your ides to travel with ear plugs.

This quaint hotel is within easy reach of Adelaide's main street, the tram and most of Adelaide's attractions that are on North Terrace. The building used to be an old office block and radio station and it was converted into a hotel. It is old but comfortable. Hindley Street is a busy street for nightlife so expect to hear heaps of noise from the revelers on a Friday and Saturday night but you are in the heart of town. There are plenty of places to eat at and the Casino has a great seafood buffet on Friday & Saturday nights.
