“Close to the city”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2008

We stayed at the Hotel Paringa for one night on a Friday night. The hotel needs a bit of a face lift as it is a bit dingy but ok if you're only there to sleep and not spend lots of time in your hotel room. The bed was reasonably comfortable - not too hard. Close to the city and mall and shops which was great. Plenty of places to eat close by so you don't have to go far. Staff at the desk were very friendly and helpful. Our room was at the back so it was reasonably quiet but I imagine the one's near the front would be a little noisy.

We arrived at about 7.30pm and walked through a back alley to get to the hotel, which I would find scary at night alone. The carpet in the lobby was filthy. Check in was quick and easy, though we were asked for a security bond which I wasn't aware of as we had pre payed.

Went up to our room (504) which was very tiny with outdated furniture. The room was very noisy and you could hear patrons at the pub at traffic all night. I didn't sleep at all the first night.

Day 2 I asked that we be moved and thankfully we were moved quickly to room 509 at the back of the hotel. What a difference this made, so much quieter and I actually got a good night sleep.

Location of hotel is good, close to shops and entertainment. (More in the dodgy part of town though)

Reception was very helpful with recomending things to do, how to get places and the best restaurants.

Not sure I would stay again, but $100 a night is very cheap. If you stay ask for a QUIET room.

We stayed in the Paringa with 5 other couples, each couple had a room. Our room wasnt too bad "Queen spa" RM 402, but our friends stayed in different types are some were rather shabby!
One couple were supposed to get brekky inc but waited all morning with none arriving. Location was great, late night drinks everywhere in reach. Brekky at the Pancake kitchen is in the same alley way yum. Our room was right on Hindley Street so was a little noisy all night but I just plugged my ears and slept quite well.. bed was pretty comfy.
Next time we will opt for a different hotel.

This hotel was our base for 10 days whilst in Adelaide for the recent
World Police and Fire Games. The hotel was one of the recommended hotels for the games.

Whilst it wasn't the best hotel we stayed in during our 4 weeks in Australia and the Far East, it was certainly the friendliest.

The hotel is situated on Hindley Street, which is Adelaide's version of a red light district. To be fair it is a very tame area, with the strip clubs etc being further down the street (to the left as you exit the lane from the hotel on Hindley Street). The area was certainly a very quiet area compared to any town or city centre I've been to in the UK and there is a police station right across the street.

The entrance to the hotel is up a narrow service lane which takes you between the hotel and the Euro Bar, which is a backpackers hostel. The small reservation desk gives the hotel a cosy, if rather basic feel. A narrow corridor leads to the lift which services all five floors. The room we stayed in on the top floor was small and basic. Two single beds, a small bathroom and a noisy air con unit. Tea and coffee facilities were stocked every day and we had a tv too. The hotel didn't offer food, but there is a cafe right next to the building which served us well. There are also a number of restaurants etc across the road, Subway, Nando's etc. No bar either, but that was easily overcome with the bar next door.

The staff were very friendly, Kirsty in particular. We were there to compete in a basketball competition for ten days, and you have no idea how many times we bothered the staff for taxi's and other stuff. They were fabulous, Kirsty and her family even came to support us on her day off!

Location wise it could be much better. On the plus side it is right next to the main shopping area (Rundle Mall) which is to the right as you leave the lane. A 10 minute walk through Rundle Mall takes you to Rundle Street, which is far more up market and has loads of great pubs and restaurants (check out Scoozi for Italian food - delicious!). A 10 minute walk up the main road takes you to Victoria Square and the tram to Glenelg, the beach. A 5 minute walk the other direction takes you to the Adelaide Cricket Oval.

The negatives have spoken for themselves. The access lane I would imagine could be quite intimidating by some travellers, especially women and the elderly. The facilities are also basic.

Overall the hotel served our purpose well. However if I was travelling to Adelaide in different circumstances I would probably consider alternative places to stay.
