“Best Mexican street food in Adelaide - but book and be aware it's not in a central location!”

Advised by friends that we had to book a few weeks in advance (yes even for week nights) we started out a bit poorly when we arrived and they didn't have our name down (we did have the voicemail confirmation still though!). So seated after waiting for a table we ordered a range of tapas - they arrived quickly and were all good - few blander than others - recommend you get a salsa on side! Overall enjoyable, busy atmosphere - and it is what it is - street food - so eat with your hands - no cutlery provided! It doesn't try to be fine dining! Spent around $25 per head inc drink.

We were looking for ingredients to make our own Mexican food and found this little gem a few doors down from chili mojo. We found it bustling and though they were booked out they asked us if we would mind sitting at a bench near the kitchen. The margaritas tasted very nice and the choice of food was good. This is not tex mex but Mexican, so be prepared to be educated because there are no fajitas, churros or chile rellanos. They keep a donkey outside as a landmark do it is easier to find on a busy road.

We booked a table for 7pm. We still weren't seated by 7:45 and walked out in frustration. In the meantime, they seated other groups that had arrived after us, offered us complimentary drinks supposedly as an apology for the unacceptably long wait but never actually gave us the drinks, yet managed to give free drinks to another group who had been waiting less than half as long as us.

The whole experience was a joke. I spent the next hour apologizing to my boyfriend for his birthday evening being ruined. It wasn't my fault in any way but I felt terrible for him. Will NEVER go there again.

I'm old enough to remember those pretty awful Australian 'Chinese' restaurants and can only be grateful that we are now spoilt for choice, not just with authentic asian food but also regional cuisines. It seems that we're on that same wave now for Mexican - out with the terrible stodge and in with some beautifully balanced flavours, textures and taste sensations and authentic recipes.
Maiz and Mezcal is family owned and run and situated in the eastern suburbs on Magill Road, about 10-15 minutes from the CBD. Unlike the other Adelaide favourite of the moment, Lucky Lupita's, M&M is a little more grown up. For a start, they take bookings - none of this too cool for school business of having to queue in the hope that you get a seat (as fun as that was once I'm not in a hurry to repeat the experience!). It's a little larger and a little more comfortable, although the acoustics are probably the same - you will find yourself raising your voice to be heard!
We were served by a young waiter called Diego (sp?), he was a friend of the family and had a cheeky grin and a warm smile - something sadly lacking in many wait staff now. The uniforms were 'cute' - not sure if they were traditional - but definitely a change from the broody and moody all black that seems to the norm now.
And what of the food? Two of us liked it hot but the other 4 were definitely chili-averse - this wasn't a problem and while the food was flavoursome, it wasn't packed with heat. We tried just about everything on the menu - the tasting platter was generous for the quality of produce - and the margaritas were delicious. We also tried the berry cheesecake which was yummy. Lots of diners were trying the house special, the pozole - a type of stew - sorry chef! and judging by the number of orders it must have been pretty good.
All in all, it was a bit like dining in someone's home - it felt friendly and warm, there was a great buzz - kids, families, friends, couples - a really great neighbourhood dining spot.

This is the BEST mexican restaurant in Adelaide, hands down! We had been waiting for them to open for over 4 months and when they did we were not disappointed. We can only endorse what the other review has said.
The food is more of the street food that you would get at the market type stalls in Mexico and it is absolutely delicious. As far as value goes it is great. Top that off with some of the most attentive waiting staff and the ease of parking, then this place is a winner.
Like the previous review, we hope this restaurant is a success because it will be a regular place for us to visit in the future.
