“Great location, but needs work.”
Reviewed June 6, 2012

This hotel is perfectly located for those with business in the city, or those who want to shop. We have stayed 3-4 times over the last 18 months. The rooms are quite a good size, reasonably clean and the beds are good. Our room was in need of a little maintenance/refurbishment: a bathroom door that would not shut easily; blinds fraying; bathroom floor tiles pitted. There was considerable external noise which woke us and kept us awake for hours during a two night stay. There will of course be noise in a city hotel, but this sounded like a construction site. We had great access to shops in the Mall, and were close enough to bring back a load of shopping before setting out to gather another lot. It was good to have breakfast available. The food is quite good but the design of the area is interesting! A significant drawback in the 'restaurant' is the noise of the giant screen TV which seems to be for the benefit of the staff rather than the guests. The staff at reception were helpful and polite, staff in the restaurant were either absent or distracted - not really very welcoming. There is car parking available in a nearby carpark, with a $16 fee for each exit. We would stay again for the convenience of being located in the Mall. The Hotel really needs some work however to justify the tarriff.

Room Tip: Don't use room 44. The external noise was terrible.

I stayed here the night before a wedding. To be clear, the rest of the wedding was held at this Hotel and the functions team was fabulous. The wedding itself could not be faulted and was the best wedding I have ever attended.

However, there is no way in hell I would ever reccomend anyone else stay here. The night before there was a function in the 2nd level 'Balcony Room' which played EXTREMELY loud, nightclub/bass filled music until midnight. The guests of this party could clearly not speak inside the function room so spent the bulk of the night on the balcony (right under my room) yelling at one another. At midnight when they all got kicked out they yelled at one another in the mall for a good hour or so. At which point the drunks from Hindley Street arrived and yelled some more.

All of this would have been fine had there been any or adequate soundproofing. As it was the girl from reception was getting it from all sides as the entire bridal party, most of their family and some friends were staying there. In the end she did leave to get us some earplugs but they frankly did not fix the situation at all.

The bride and groom were staying at the Hotel. I know that the bride got about 2 hours of sleep in the end given she was quite upset about the party right under her room, had the same problems with yelling guests/drunks and so on.

The bride's hair and makeup girls also stayed here the night before and had a similar experience with very little sleep because of the above problems.

In the hotel's defence they waived the valet parking charges and reduced room rates but it was appalling that they did not warn any of the wedding guests that there would be a party the night before. Had they done that many of us would have opted to stay somewhere else. Which I presume is why they did not tell us.

The whole experience left a sour taste in our mouths. It was not a cheap wedding, many of the rooms were let out to guests of the wedding and people felt very cheated by the accomodation side of things.

BUT I should emphasise the functions staff were wonderful and the wedding was fantastic.

Room Tip: If you must stay attempt to get the fifth floor as there are function rooms on the First and Second...

party in the level one bar/restaurant, service lift, slamming doors, loud voices, trucks outside, hard bed = appalling night's sleep. Dingy bathroom, the bedroom smelled of powdery perfume, furniture has seen better days, damage to walls in the corridors, the list is endless

For a place to call its self boutique it needs to have an edge or a certain charm The Richmond used to have both and now has neither.
I have stayed here a few times over the past few years and after a break of about 6 months in the last 4 weeks have been there twice and have now decided I wont be staying there again.
First up they no longer provide al la carte breakfast despite the fact they still advertise it on their own web site. I pointer this out to to a women on reception and she told me I was wrong ..that her manager had removed all reference to ALC breakfast...
I then enquired about the use of the Fitness First gym for guests and was also told this facility is no longer offered and her manager had also removed all refernece to it
It is also an interesting approach in the service industry for a guest to be told they are flat out wrong. As of 3 minutes ago Alal carte breakfast is stil promoted in their own website and the gym offer is mentioned intheir own in room printed materialits still on their own web page. when you do go down to breakfast you are greated by a sports channel blaring out american rodeo
the other major issue is general tiredness of decor and furinishings . in my last 2 stays i have stayed in room 201 and 58. in 201 the upholsrtery was dirty and the furniture veneer surfaces warped and pitted there was no plug in the basin and the shower head was broken so would only hang limply spraying water at the wall.
In 58 the bed as without doubt the worst I have ever slept in in my life. two singles pushed together and both slumping in toward the centre leaving you hanging over the ever widening gap between them. I have since found out a colleague had stayed here and complained bitterly about the same thing and demanded to be moved I suggest the manager spend a night in it and maybe then will see it needs to be replaced.
whatever this place is these days in aint boutique!

Room Tip: avoid 58..world's worst bed

We stayed at the Hotel Richmond on Saturday night for a wedding the following day. That evening there was a private function in the First Bar and it was SO loud. We were on the 5th floor but could really feel the base from the music, when that finally stopped you could hear all the loud drunken people in the mall. The windows are no thicker than standard ones so they block absolutely no noise from outside. Had a terrible sleep and from speaking to other guests in the morning they were the same, some even started calling other hotels at 11pm desperate to get some sleep. The bathroom floors weren't clean, there were no hair dryers and the door didn't shut without slamming into it. On the upside, breakfast the following day was delicious in First Bar with a great selection of juices, cereal, fruit and pastries. Great for functions, terrible for sleeping!

I am writing this review from Hotel Richmond at 1am. I can't sleep as the music from the nightclub is still blaring.
Rooms are less than ordinary. Toilet won't stop flushing, stains on the carpet and furnishings, blinds are damaged and do not fit the window (not looking forward to the light waking me in a few hours if this music ever ends).
Staff have been completely rude and don't understand what the problem is. Are arguing with me that it's not a nightclub but bar with a dj (sounds like a nightclub to me). Staff tell me that it is stated on their website that there is an onside bar. ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STAYING HERE SHOULD KNOW THE BAR IS REALLY A NIGHTCLUB AND YOU WON'T GET ANY SLEEP!

Room Tip: Don't stay here and your room will certainly be better!

The noise in the rooms is shocking!!! There is a party on the 1st floor bar and yet on the 4th floor I can quite literally hear every word of every song and it's nearly 1 am right now. So angry. Have called reception twice who have been friendly enough but still the sound gets louder. Serious problems with this establishment calling themselves a hotel. There needs to be a warning on their website that this is the case. Am tempted to check out in the middle of the night!!! Unbelievable.
