“I Wouldnt Stay Anywhere Else in Adelaide.”
Reviewed January 12, 2010

My job has seen me visiting Adelaide 22 nights a month since April 2009, earlier on during this period I have stayed in the "other" supposed quality hotels in Adelaide. Since July 2009 The Stamford Plaza Hotel has been my home away from home. The hotel sits back elegantly, overlooking the SA Parliament, the Casino and local parklands. It is a brief 2 minute stroll from the city centre and a short ten minute drive from the airport.
You are always met at the door or your car by one of the many willing concierge staff who look after valet parking your and your luggage.
The reception and entrance area of the hotel is reminiscent of the grandeur people expected in days gone by with welcoming reception staff to greet you.
The rooms are tastefully decorated, large in comparison to some, with the usual compliment of tv , dvd, cd player, internet, mini bar and the excellent air con, a desk completes the ensemble.
The rooms are available with a shower, or a spa and a shower.
The selection and quality of meals available via the two in-house restaurants is excellent, catering for all needs, all of the meals are available for room service too. The hotel has an excellent gym, sauna and spa adjacent to the roof top swimming pool.
I would agree that there are other hotels in the locale with similar facilities, but, what sets the Stamford Plaza head and shoulder above the others is the Staff. From the concierge staff, the reception staff, the room service staff to the waitress staff and the management they work tirelessly to convince you that you are their most important cutomer, nothing is too much trouble. Generally a good indication of how people perform is when things go wrong, and of course mistakes are made, but at the Stamford any concern is treated quickly fixed quickly and followed up quickly to your satisfaction.

I wouldnt choose anywhere else to stay.

This hotel was in an ideal location. The tram is directly outside the door which brings you straight to the beach in Glenelg. The hotel room was fine-standard enough but had every thing we needed. Buffet breakfast was very expensive so I'd advise a short walk into the city for a breakfast alfresco. Would definitely stay again, however the pool isn't great!

Thank you for your time and comments.

As you mentioned, directly outside our hotel there is a tram stop which regularly departs to Glenelg for those perfect Adelaide summer days, where there is no better place to be than the beach.

We hope you will return to the Stamford Plaza Adelaide in the near future.

Kind regards,

The big drawcards of this hotel are:
- the service: very efficient and friendly, fast check-in. We arrived around midday and just wanted to drop our bags, but the staff there were happy to check us in early.
- the rooms are spacious, quiet and very clean
- great location on North Terrace with tram/bus stop 50 m away, one block from the shopping malls, etc.
- nice outdoor pool on the roof top, with outdoor spa bath and a small gym.

Now the downside:
- the hotel is tired, especially the reception area and the lifts
- if you decide to recycle your towels, they give you a voucher for the Swish restaurant downstairs (20% off food). Only we found out too late that it is 20% off for one person, not two.
- breakfast was not included and cost about AUD 25 (way too much for us - although this is typical hotel bfast price range). There are plenty of nice cafes around to have breakfast for a fraction of the cost.
- internet access not included in room rate (hello - this is 2010 people, I find it incredible some hotel still charge $25 a day for internet access).

All in all, for about AUD 110 per night, this was a pretty good deal for us and we were happy with this hotel.

The hotel is pretty appealing when you first walk in, and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are alright, fairly spacious and in decent shape though look a bit old.

The biggest negative about this hotel is the outrageous price for in-room broadband access. They charge $12.95 per hour or $24.95 per day. Given that it's 2009, that's ridiculous. Internet access should be free (or included in the price), just like water. Yes, there is free wireless internet in the lobby, but it's a hassle having to go down there all the time.
I was also not at all impressed by the breakfast buffet. Yes, it was adequate, but re-stocking was slow and the coffee was horrible.

My stay was paid for, so I can't comment on value, but I probably wouldn't stay there if I had to pay for it myself.

So here are the positives about this hotel: the reservation was a breeze. Courtney from reservations was very helpful and prompt so everything started to look nice. The hotel is clean, the location is great, the gym is small but decent and there is a rooftop pool and spa where they had plenty of towels. I personally find it a pain when I need to ask for pool towels but this place had plenty of them available by the pool. There were also a couple of restaurants on the site which was great. The porters were helpful as well. You also get bathrobes as well as slippers. The housekeeping was great as well.

Now the not so nice part: the room of this 5* hotel had a cork board inside the room. I thought this was extremely tacky and there were a couple of pamphlets pinned to this cork board. Looks like their marketing guys are trying hard to get you to spend more money on the premises but it's a little off putting. There is also no turndown service available. The shower head had no pressure at all and there was no bathtub, you just have a shower in a corner of the bathroom. The breakfast has a nice variety but the plates weren't fully clean. We took a couple of plates and noticed they were both not properly cleaned. I pointed this to one of the waiters and he went to bring us some clean plates. When he came back with the "clean plates" they seemed to be no different from the rest and they still looked like they weren't properly cleaned/washed. The size of the juice glasses was the smallest I have ever seen in any upmarket hotel that I stayed in.

The nicest part was when I got a call from the hotel managers after filling in one of their surveys and one of them apologised and offered me a room upgrade if I ever go back. I wasn't fully dissapointed with this hotel but still it was most pleasant to see the managers listened to the feedback I as a customer provided.

I think I will give the hotel another try next year.

A trip to stay in town was made by the team at the Stamford. The hotel is in a great central location, just across the road from the casino and a minutes walk from the main shopping and cultural precincts. The hotel is not new but very comfortable, the secret of it's success is the great team of staff. Ashleigh, who was front of house, couldn't do enough for us and organised everything when we had a problem with our car, real old fashioned great service, an apparently young but very professional lady, what a difference from our recent visit to Melbourne! The hotel has all the required facilities and prices in the restaurant were not cheap but very reasonable given the great quality.
Room service was prompt and late checkout arranged with a smile and a thank you for staying here!
Speaking with other guests, including a Qantas captain, everyone had positive comments about the staff and facilities. Stamford will certainly see us again!
