“Overall not outstanding but for the location and price in a capital city very good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013 via mobile

Stayed at the Stanford for three nights. Located in the heart of Adelaide it is very central. The casino, Adelaide oval, performing arts centre, Rundle Mall and nearby central market. Trams and buses nearby. Parking is $20 per night which is the rough price for over night parking in Adelaide City (multiple entry). Car park is a rabbit warren so beware! Pretty tight

Place is a bit dated but room was spacious and bed comfortable

Staff were friendly

We had planned to use the gym and the pool during our stay in Adelaide to keep healthy and try not to put on an extra few kilos from the amazing food and wine in South Australia. However, on arrival we were told the pool was under refurbishment. We went to look at the gym but to our surprise the gym was a construction zone. Would of appreciated being told of this major renovation prior to booking, a bit frustrating.

Had breakfast included which was good. Selection of food was standard buffet breakfast fare. However, was a little annoying how long empty trays were left & not replaced. On the three days we were there the pastry section was not replaced once (over at least half hour period, on last day we were there at least a hour). Seemed like there were lots of bus groups who would eat early and pillage the food. Took a very long time to be replaced/if at all which was a bit average.

Overall not outstanding but for the location and price in a capital city very good value. We had an incredible restful sleep here too, extremely quiet & the black out curtains amazing

Dear Bristraveller3870

Reviews from Top contributors are greatly valued and we thank you for the four star review we received.

We have completed some urgents works to the pool that is located on the 20th floor. With the temporary closure we took the opportunity to upgrade our Gymnasium (a temporary one is located on the 5th floor.) I am sorry this was not communicated to you properly and as a regular traveller these details are very important.

We wish you all the best in 2014 and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel to enjoy our enhancements

Warm regards

Carl Forrest

The hotel looked modern on the outside and the foyer appeared very neat and upmarket. The reception staff were efficient but not really welcoming. We got the feeling that we were customers, whereas some other hotels exude more warmth. The service was quick and we went up to our room. Because it was my wife's birthday, I booked the most extravagant suite in the hotel (with a price to match). We opened the double doors into the suite to find a hall table; with a broken leg. The suite was quite large but the furniture was an average standard. The bathroom boasted a two person spa, but it was cracked and some of the shelves and doors of the bathroom cabinets were missing large chunks of veneer. At least we would have a nice view; or so we thought. In fact the view was a tiny balcony with cigarette butts everywhere. This looked out to a tall half finished building next door. So no view, cracked spa, broken table, missing veneer and average furniture - all at a premium price.

The TV was fairly small but it had good reception. The in-house movie selection was rather poor, but the king size bed was very comfortable. We decided to take a walk to the convenience store for "munchies" as the minibar prices for even water were exhorbitant. The gymnasium was open but the pool and spa rooms were closed for renovations. The Rickshaw restaurant was also undergoing renovations and was therefore operating from inside TG's restaurant.

We decided to try dinner outside the hotel and the concierge was very helpful in trying to get a reservation at a Japanese restaurant. Due to the Christmas holidays many restaurants were closed so in the end we went to the Rickshaw restaurant. I will draft a separate review of that restaurant.

My overall impression of the Stamford Plaza was that in the public places it looked modern and well appointed, but on the inside it was quite tired and in need of attention. I think that considering I paid for the best suite, it was over-priced and lacked the basics. We were not warned that many of the hotel's facilities were closed for renovations so it was all very disappointing.

I rated this hotel 3 circles only because the concierge was so friendly and helpful.

Stayed here for the cricket in December on bed and breakfast, it's an excellent venue for Adelaide Oval and for city centre and shopping. The room was ok but needs a bit of an uplift I'd say it was looking tired. Friends of ours had a lovely view over the Oval, we had a view of the car park, but that's the luck of the draw so no complaints there. The breakfast experience was poor to say the least, a buffet breakfast which meant queuing for tea, coffee and toast as well as the main breakfast. Plenty of selection of fruits and continental breakfast food but unfortunately hot food often cold, egg chef seemed overworked and you could never quite manage to get your eggs in time with the toast! There didn't appear to be enough staff around to cope with the amount of guests. It's meant to be a 4 star hotel but in my opinion it's falls short of that. We did fill in a customer comment form and included our room number on it, but did not receive any feedback. The main, quiet bar closed at 9pm, and hotel residents could not get a drink after 11pm except on room service, but that seems to be the thing in Adelaide. It's a shame because we stayed here before 3 years ago and believe it's gone down since then. It was however clean in all areas , the pool was also closed due to being renovated but they did allow us a voucher for $50 dollars on food and beverage as way of compensation and they relocated the gym to the board room. The concierge and front reception staff always helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Adelaide Oval it's beautiful especially at night.

Dear CherylBlackpool

Thank you for your review and I hope you enjoyed your time here in Australia for the cricket. My apologies for the breakfast issues which we addressed by staggering the group entry times.
We are doing a number of enahncements to the rooms to bring them upto the level of our other rooms and in addition we are refurbishing two restaurants which will be the places to eat on North Terrace.

Cheryl if you do come this way for the next Ashes downunder please drop us a line as we will have a very different product to offer you then.

Warm regards

I recently stayed in a room at the Stamford for our wedding anniversary & had a private function in the Crystal room. The accommodation was great value, having booked online a month in advance. The staff were excellent, professional, friendly & efficient. The accommodation was well fitted out, clean, serviceable etc. The private function, “Crystal room”, is absolutely beautiful! Very romantic, elegant & classy. The Rickshaw restaurant staff provided excellent food and personalised service over & above what is considered normal. We were exceptionally pleased with all aspects of our Stamford stay & cannot recommend the Stamford & staff highly enough. We really appreciate, value & encourage this level of service. Thank you.

Room Tip: Book online one month in advance to get great value rooms.

Dear Donald D

Thank you for the fabulous review and the opportunity we had make your experience here at Stamford a memorable one. The Crystal room is simply the best function room for any event in Adelaide. With its decor and view over parliament it simply is stunning.

I also appreciate your comments regarding the team here and the service standards....thank you.

I wish you all the best in 2014 and we hope to welcome you back.

With its central location and comfortable rooms this hotel will suit the business traveller visiting Adelaide. Service is efficient and bathrooms are clean. Unfortunately Saturday night means noisy partygoers on all floors ... Showers late at night and the thin walls between rooms means that nothing is private! Perhaps week nights are less noisy ? I won't be staying there again on a weekend ...

Dear RubaSkala

Thank you for your review and i would like to apologise for the noise you encountered during your stay. You will be pleased to know that we have closed the Swish Club venue where the noise was coming from and this is being morphed into an Argentinean grill.
We have 335 rooms and I can guarantee you a room which will be more than suitable for you needs and a quiet sleep.....even during the silly work party season!!!!

Wishing you all the best in 2014.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2013

I booked a upgraded room, premier room for 1 night. Received confirmation and welcome letter a day ahead which was good. We arrived and checked in, unfortunate for us we were put on floor 19 under the pool renovations which included constant jack hammers and banging above our heads. I rang down to reception and asked what was going on they said it was renovations and should be finishing soon for the day. I asked what time they would be starting in the morning and was informed at 11am well after checkout.
During our stay a luggage person(?) was rude to my friend and I in a lift, the same young man pushed in front of my husband and I to get in a lift when we arrived. Very poor.
We awoke to jack hammers at 9am, our paper that we ordered was the incorrect paper so we decided to not worry about breakfast and just checkout. We had discussed staying an extra night but due to the situation there was no way we would stay. Very very disappointed that the hotel would not inform guests that there were renovations and even at checkin not mention anything and happily place guests who are paying a higher rate for a premier room under a noisy renovation. I think it shows very poor customer service. All the front desk said in the morning was 'oh sorry it won't happen again' not really any compensation for a ruined overnight 'special evening' in our hometown. To date I have had no contact from the hotel, I completed a post stay survey they send to guests.
Stay away from floor 19!

Room Tip: Renovations December 2013 on floor 20 (the pool) very noisy, disturbing floor 19

Just very happy and helpful staff makes it more enjoyable to stay at this hotel. The cleanliness and location are just an added bonus. Breakfast was he only meal I had on this trip but the selection was wide and the fruit selection was all super fresh.
