Owner description: Established in 1986 and built on the site of the former Adelaide Destitute Asylum, the Migration Museum was the first museum dedicated to the social history of migration in Australia. The Museum works towards the preservation, understanding and enjoyment of South Australia’s diverse cultures. It is a place to discover the many identities of the people of South Australia through the stories of individuals and communities. Its nine galleries, which include permanent and changing displays, trace the history and culture of Aboriginal peoples in Australia prior to colonisation, the history and impact of immigration from the nineteenth century onward, as well as the history of the site. The Museum is just a short walk down Kintore Avenue from North Terrace and is easily accessible by public transport. All of the Museum's galleries have disabled access. Entry to the Museum is free, with an optional gold coin donation. Tour groups are welcome but must book in advance. Members of the public can book a guided tour of the Migration Museum with a minimum of ten people per booking and a cost of $10 per person, concession rate $5 per person.

“Very interesting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2010

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the migration museum. It's free to get in. My grandad was a £10 pom so I found it very interesting. Relaxed and not overcrowded, this is well worth an hour or 2 of your time in Adelaide.

“Small museum with a big message”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2010

Despite it's relatively small size we ended up spending a couple of hours at this museum. The exhibits are incredibly well put together to take you on a journey through immigration into SA over the centuries. By focusing on a handful of families stories this you ended up really connecting with the people and what they went through. Load of food for thought and made what could have been a really dry subject very interesting. Lots of hands on stuff for children which us adults really enjoyed too!

“Interesting look back at Histroy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2010

The migration museum is a free museum just at the top of the Adelaide CBD ( close to other galleries & museums.
It tells the history of the people who came to adelaide from england & around the world.
The building itself has a dark history as a facility for homeless people
They have series of standard displays & some short term exhibits.
There is a place where you can see how the old white australia policy was enforced by getting people to take a test in a language they had never heard of.
