“Grateful that the zoo is opened on Christmas Day”
Reviewed December 28, 2012 via mobile

We were wondering what we should do on Christmas day in Adelaide when we found out the zoo was opened . So we took the tram to the closest stop, Rundle Mall, and walked the last 15 minutes to the zoo. It was a very pleasant walk too!

The highlight for us are the pandas, the baboons and the sea lions. The zoo is well designed with lots of trees, providing shade from the sun and heat.

Worth a visit if you have time to kill.

“Panda Haven”

Really enjoyed the Pandas - was surprised how energetic one of them was. Running around the enclosure and climbing constantly.

“Somewhere different on Christmas Day”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

As "Adelaide Orphans" we decided to go/do something/where different on Christmas Day. Like many places in Australia, little is open on Dec 25 but surprisingly enough, in Adelaide the Zoo is open. Every single Adelaide native I have spoken to had no idea their zoo was open 365 days of the year.
Animals are the stock standard fare except for the pandas who put on a marvellous display for us, opening their presents with much excitement and animation.
Facilities are good. Entry fee does take your breath away but it is what it is.

“animals from all around”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

Although not the biggest zoo in Australia, Adelaide zoo is pretty reasonable. You could easily spend a few hours here exploring the animals from Australia, Africa, Asia... There is a large walk through aviary, plenty of animal feedings you can watch.
It is moderately expensive so you would want to plan on spending a while there, but keep in mind most of the money goes to conservation and breeding programs for endangered animals.

I attended a performance art event here during the last FRINGE festival, which was amazing. I don't know if it will be on again, but events in the zoo are pretty cool.

10 min wlak from city centre, 2-4 min walk to botanic gardens, 2 min walk to river torrens, 5 min walk to Adelaide University

“Okay, but not especially outstanding”
Reviewed December 25, 2012 via mobile

A 25-minute walk from the Rundle Mall to get to the zoo was nice, through tree-lined streets, and along one of the many many green spaces that abound in Adelaide's centre. The zoo itself is okay, and I have no doubt its employees love and care for the animals but, as has been mentioned, some of the enclosures seem a little small, a little stark and devoid of stimulation. A *lot* of bird exhibits! I guess they are an easy-care animal. With their limited space, and inability to expand, I understand and empathise with the logistical issues they face.

I realise every day will be different, and animal behaviour will be dependent on many factors, but it seemed like there were a lot of empty exhibits or areas closed off. We were there from around 11.30am - 2.30pm and felt like we saw everything, walking at a moderate pace, stopping to read the signs or look at the more interesting animals visible. Pretty much everything at this time - except for the meerkats and hopping mice - were lethargic and sleeping and/or out of view. But the two lionesses were out, with one in particular padding around the perimeter and providing a better up-close experience. (I'm sure she was hoping a few small children would somehow find their way inside!)

Good to do once, and great that it's so close to the city centre, but overall this zoo seemed a bit tired and dated. Certainly our other trips to Taronga Park Zoo (Sydney) and the Werribee open-range zoo (Melbourne) had better set-ups and highlights (and I'm sure better budgets, which can't be helped).

Would I recommend it to friends (without children)? Nah. Have some time to kill? Sure! Have kids? Not sure what the pricing is like (adults $31 each) but I always think it's good for kids to get off the couch and interact with the real world!
