This is one of those joints that pops up in Adelaide every now and then that gives hope to the aspirationsl hipsters that Adelaide may one day turn into Melbourne. No disguising that it is a beer barn and pokies pub that smells, and I am not exaggerating, like my cat has nightly relieved herself on the carpet.

The food menu looks good but the deal on the plate ranges from awful to ordinary.

Go here if it is late at night and you have already drunk your own body weight.

Great revamp, minimalist but classy. Not just the usual 1980s cricket-sponsoring beers on tap - real beers and ales.

Great food, great staff, but you must book if you wish to eat there. It is very popular and out of the busy area but closed enough to CBD to walk.

The formerly daggy and disreputable Queen's Arms Hotel has been reinvented as the Hotel Wright Street with a really impressive renovation. It's now contemporary, a little quirky, comfortable rather than cutting edge, and with an admirable use of natural and recycled materials.

You can dine in or around the bar, where there are a range of seating areas and zones, or in the adjacent dining room. The menu is serviceable but discerning, with traditional pub fare and one or two interesting options for the modern diner and the modern diet. While the choices might be based on traditional pub fare, the food has been ratcheted up a notch. We tried two traditional counter-ies, the fish & chips and the steak sandwich, and were very impressed with the content and styling that came out on the plate - and it tasted as good as it looked! It's just really fresh, quality in every ingredient, well cooked, and nicely presented. The service is pretty good too, considering how busy the place can get.

These guys know their market and you can get a range of boutique beers on tap to accompany your meal or enjoy beforehand. There's also an interesting choice of wines, and they are also starting to make cider one of their 'things' with a new cider garden out the back.

The food is great for a pub, the vibe is non-commercial, down to earth and relaxed, and it's great to see a few different drink options. This pub is making a point of being a local hub and trying to build a community around itself - which shouldn't be hard in the friendly and eclectic south-west of the city. Saturdays are a big day for locals and people travelling into the city to shop at the nearby Central Market and the pub does a breakfast menu then - offering market shoppers the chance to leave their full grocery trolleys chilling in the coolroom while they chow down on a cooked breakfast. This part of Wright St is also in the heart of Adelaide's legal district so at lunchtime and after work you will find a few suited up lawyers among the diverse clientele, and of a weekend it's fast building a reputation as a great pub to meet and enjoy a night out with friends (for the slightly more mature, post-nightclub crowd). This place is becoming an asset to the neighbourhood and unlike some of its neighbours, doesn't put style over substance. Don't go there for the food, go there for the whole vibe. It's just a good place to hang out.
