This was a very special experience. As a resident of a very crowded part of the northern hemisphere (washington DC) I really felt like I had left the planet when I arrived at the beautiful beaches of Semaphore and Glenelg in South Australia.Everything is upside down, east is west, west is east, winter is summer, summer is winter etc. in the southern hemisphere and I was constantly consulting my compass to find true north... The horizon seems longer and closer to there. The beaches are pristine. A walk out on the pier at Semaphore truly gives you a sense of place. It was exotic.
While there I had the opportunity to dine with a local family and experience Australian hamburgers. These consist of the hamburger, a fried egg, real bacon and juicy red beets... wrapped up in a bun with other salad type ingredients. The families home was a delight with the traditional metal roof and huge bullnose veranda which had a full set of comfortable living room furniture and a piano on it... very much barefoot living. in a vibrant small town with elegant homes next to an amazing natural resource. The place seemed to be channeling Coronado Island in San Diego with fewer people, a lower price tag and a truly Australian vibe.
An excellent vacation or retirement spot... This place is a winner.
