My friends and I stumbled across this place on Hindley St (not known for being classy) and were pleasantly surprised. It seemed like a secret bar you'd more likely find in Melbourne! There's all sorts of antique pharmacy and medical items in old cabinets along the walls. If you're into Steampunk then this place is for you! The selection of wines is extraordinary and the cocktails are well made. It's not the sort of place you'd come if you just wanted a beer, however they have a good selection of boutiques for the more cultured taste buds. The food we ordered was delicious, not huge portions but very reasonable. They also do a variety of tapas style dishes if you wanted to share. What made this place for me is the staff, they were very knowledgable and accommodating to our requests and queries without being all snooty about it. Overall this place has a very relaxed atmosphere and is a great place to forget the outside world for a while. It's probably not the cheapest place you'll find but I'd say it's worth the experience. Enjoy!

Looking for somewhere to have drinks prior to dinner on a Saturday afternoon and found places were either closed or inundated with footy crowds.
This place was cosy, great atmosphere and attentive staff. The wine and whisky lists were impressive. Definetly the place to go for the sophisticated night cap. The boys tried lots of whisky while we could drink around the world on the extensive wine list.

We were beginning to lose hope of a nice dinner on a Monday night in Hindley street when we stumbled across Apothecary 1878.
Their drinks list is out of this world, the food was really good (albeit a bit pricey) but the atmosphere was so good that we stayed and tasted good wines, some really interesting boutique beers and good food. The service was also good.

Sometimes when you least expect it you stumble onto restaurants/bars that have simply - got it right.

Found this place by accident - don't be put off by the location - in the jungle of gaming rooms, bars and strip joints that seem to be the norm on Hindley Street these days.

Simple decor - styled around its namesake, simple, good music.

Great selection of wines, whiskey - simple but tasty menu and great service/staff who actually know what they're doing .

Will be back !

What a fantastic, lovely, romantic, evocative, generous, sublime and professional restaurant. I really don't like gnocchi but the Parisian gnocchi is absolutely delightful! Dine in a cellar far away from the madness of Hindley St. And let the dreams of what might have been, and what could be, begin.
Lovely, great food. Can't wait to go again. Staff are perfect: attentive when they need to be, caring, open-hearted and everything I could wish for. And know when they need not to be around. Gold stars.
