The tram starts slightly North West of the city at the entertainment center. Travels East along North Terrace past the Adelaide Railway Station (suburban), turns South into King William Street (main thoroughfare) to the beginning of the park lands. This section of the route is free. From there it progresses South through the park lands and turns West to Glenelg.
At Glenelg, both left and right, as far as the eye can see, the beach has white sand. There is a jetty and a boat harbour with a walk way across it's lock. Jetty Road has numerous small shops and you are spoilt for choices of where to eat.
There is plenty of things to do for adults and children. If the weather is sunny and warm take your towel and bathers. The kids could also bring a bucket and spade.
You can't get a beach much better than this. No surf but very safe for children.
Don't forget, "swim between the flags".
