We have recently arrived at the One and Only Hayman Island resort and felt the need to share our experience. I will confess at this junction that I have never written a review of any establishment in the past, so let me again begin with WOW!
We have spent considerable time travelling this region and stayed in most of the 5 star accommodation options available throughout the Whitsunday's, but nothing compares to the sensory feast you will enjoy here.
After reading several other reviews there is little need to explain the process of transferring from Hamilton island to Hayman island, and as stated its unlike any resort arrival/ check-in that I have ever encountered elsewhere in the world. However upon arrival to the island guest are individually greeted by a member of staff and then escorted to their room, a nice touch that does require mentioning.
The rooms are incredible to say the least with some of the most unique, comfortable and tasteful furnishings that everyone should be exposed too.The resort employees are eager to please and the friendliest I've encountered in Australia, this is a credit to the management team.
Dining doesn't disappoint as the quality and presentation of your meals is comparable to signature establishments in Capitol cities. The atmosphere throughout the resort dining options is comfortable and relaxed. The restaurants give you a choice of Asian, Australian, seafood and Italian cuisines with well trained and attentive staff. Add a wine list that meets the standard of the fare and now you're in foodie paradise.
The vista from the rooms is unbelievable with the iconic pool as a centre piece, a sandy beach lined with swaying palm trees, crystal blue water and dramatic island landscapes in the distance. During your stay you may be lucky enough to meet some of the locals, hump back whales and inquisitive cockatoos to mention a few.
Everyone needs to visit a special place like this at least once in a lifetime and sample the finest food, lodging and staff that can be offered.
Well done to the group!

What could have been a lovely weekend spoiled by some pretty terrible service experiences. Maybe they will get these issues ironed out with time, but I wouldn't take the chance again. Restaurants understaffed and running behind, room service line left unanswered or busy for hours, when cockatoos got into our room and made a giant mess, I asked where we could go while it was cleaned and was told I could go sit in the dirty room next door... Um, no thanks?
Exception was spa service which was excellent.

We have visited Hayman island every year for the past three years and recently stayed at the newly refurbished one & only hayman resort (25 July-1 Aug). I will firstly detail the changes so that returning guests know what to expect. I will start with the launch transfers. We were on the Sun Goddess both on our way there and back which is the second largest of the launches. Same process as always, in that your luggage is collected for you and you are then escorted to the launch and served champagne which is now French and quite a lovely introductory touch to the luxury you are about to experience. We were pleased to see that some staff was retained, we were warmly welcomed by Joseph who is a real character and definitely looked after us and made us feel very welcome. He truly is a gentleman with a genuine interest in guests having an unforgettable holiday experience . He is a credit to the crew. The launch also now has a chef on board who creates lovely canapés for the 50 minute ride over . All the staff on the launch were very professional special mention to Chloe and Jade (not just on the launch but throughout our entire stay she was warm and friendly, a wonderful addition to the Hayman team). We were checked in on board and given a jazzed up welcome pack with all the information you require for your stay. When we arrived at the resort we were greeted at the pontoon by a number of staff who gave us a general tour of all the changes and then escorted us to our suite. The most apparent change are the rooms. They are all larger now as the resort has halved the number of rooms it previously had. We stayed in a one bedroom pool suite and it was utterly amazing. It comprised of a large dining/sitting room area with a flat screen TV which then led into an expansive bedroom with a four post bed that was extremely comfortable and yet another flat screen TV in the bedroom. Next, his and hers bathroom vanities as well as a large bathtub, toilet and shower. There is also a double balcony with a small outdoor table on one side and a cabana on the other. The finishes are modern and you can definitely see that the decor has been carefully selected down to the finer details of matching the rugs to the patterns on the privacy screen that separates the bedroom from the bathroom as well as matching these to the light fixture in the living room. With the short time the resort was closed in order to renovate, it is astounding that the quality of the new rooms is so high- no cheap finishes here. Next the iconic hayman pool has been spruced up and the bar now called on the rocks has been renovated also. The number of pool lounges and cabanas has massively increased. There are also many new umbrellas installed for a shadier option by the pool. Also there are now four pool shacks with which are a really good option for families and offer protection from the sun and views over the coral sea and the pool. There are also brand new one and only hayman beach towels which are of high quality. It is evident that a lot of work goes into the upkeep of the resort on the whole, the resort is well staffed and all staff are always working hard. Other changes include a new gym with state of the art equipment, a new hair salon and a new resort store which stocks vitamin A swimwear and Seafolly swimwear as well as limited one and only merchandise and basic need items. Next, dinning. Most restaurants are basically the same aesthetically only renamed . Breakfast restaurant Azure is now called Pacific the breakfast buffet hasn't changed it meets the usual high standard. Italian restaurant La Trattoria is now Amici, the decor has changed and the introduction of a woodfire pizza oven means a menu more focused around pizza. We dined here three nights and there was enough variety and food was of a good standard, we found it very reasonably priced. Fontaine is now Fire, the menu is pretentious and doesn't deliver in my opinion, in saying that I accept everyone's taste buds differ and perhaps in the future I'll be convinced otherwise but when comparing Fire to its predecessor it was underwhelming. Food was nice but not as nice as it should have been for the price. I have dined at many restaurants with similar price tags but didn't feel satisfied on this occasion. Service at Fire much like all the other restaurants was excellent. Finally, restaurant Oriental which is now Bamboo. What a standout, restaurant manager Leila is a true professional and she is magnificent at her role. We dined at Bamboo three times also and the food was Michelin star worthy, especially the wagyu beef. Do yourself a favour if you like big flavours and honest tasty refined food choose Bamboo over Fire. We loved every meal here and ordered more than we should have on all three occasions in an attempt to sample the majority of the menu. Yum! There is one restaurant still under construction situated where the beach pavilion once was which is to be called Aquazure and will have a tapas style focus with more family friendly meals as it will be surrounded by the new family pool it will supposedly be open within the month, I believe it will add great variety, apparently it will also encompass a gelato bar which I'm really sorry I missed out on. All in all the one and only changes to Hayman are positive. During our stay we saw management from a series of one and only resorts there to help with the transition period and re-opening, one man who deserves a special mention is James Wyndham. He is really good at his job, he is normally part of management at one and only Dubai resort. He works incredibly hard engaging with all the guests and making each and every visitor feel like a VIP. We saw James at breakfast lunch and dinner, he knew all guests by name and really lifted the profile of one and only through his customer service. All of the Staff at Hayman cannot be faulted and it is evident as a return guest that the customer service standard has lifted to that of a five star resort. If this is what the resort is like whilst still ironing out the creases I am excited to see what it will become. We will be back to one and only Hayman, the location is paradise and the new infrastructure and staff make paradise heaven.
NB: My husband wants me to give a special mention to Jasper from Bar 50 (previously Club Lounge) and his whiskey knowledge. If you are a lover of whiskey Jasper is you man!

We’ve recently returned from a stunning four night stay at One&Only Hayman Island.

The highlights:
•There is definitely plenty to do on Hayman whatever your interests are including day trips, hikes, brilliant restaurants, modern gym, stunning Hayman Pool. This includes many complimentary activities. In this regard, four days wasn’t enough.
•We stayed in a Hayman Ocean View room. Our room was far enough from the main part of the hotel to feel like we had the beach to ourselves. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, and don’t fancy a view of sunbakers, a room in this wing is perfect
•Delicious buffet breakfast each morning coupled with a gorgeous view - great way to start the day. The omelettes cooked to order were second to none.
•I was pleasantly surprised that prices for cocktails were reasonable (in my opinion), similar to what you would be in the CBD.
•We had a lovely helicopter trip to Whitehaven. We are so lucky to have this on our doorstep.
•The best seafood risotto in Amici restaurant! So good I had it twice. Fire was also exquisite. Joseph and Taine, and Jasper in the bar really set the benchmark of good service.
•At the pool you have the choice of a cabana, a day bed or regular deck chairs. Pool attendants were great offering to clean our sunglasses, served complimentary iced tea and face spritzes! One of the small touches that you expect from a property of this calibre.

In terms of feedback:
•As other reviewers have mentioned, it is true that the staff have a little way to go in getting the basics down pat, specifically relation to menu knowledge and general communication with guests. I think this will come with time.
•There was an obvious issue with our booking to Whitehaven beach. We never really found out what went wrong. I wasn’t particularly impressed given the cost. However the issue was quickly rectified and we were on our way within 30 mins.
•A piece of advice to team leaders in the restaurants: do not give instructions to staff when they are serving! All it did was to alert us to where things were going wrong, and it really was unnecessary!
•Although we expected it, there is still some building work going on to completely finish the resort. That being said, the construction crew were very quiet and discreet.

I am anticipating that it will be a matter of months until the resort is on par with the leading resorts in Asia and Europe.

It is hard to fault O&O Hayman island. The scenery is exemplary, the weather generally reliable, the service outstanding and the facilities excellent. A few parts out the resort, mainly the family water sports area are still under construction. There are some great touches; the inclusive breakfast it outstanding in quality and choice, there is plenty of water in the rooms and the food in the restaurants is excellent. The area for complimentary catamaran sailing is rather limited due to the usual health and safety, as is the area for the over expensive jet ski 'safari' which largely gives the opportunity to buzz around in circles on a jet ski rather than, say sight see to one of the small adjacent island. There is a lot if nickel and dining over small things. Even the tennis ball dispenser is charged for so if you don't have a partner to play, expect to pay. There is no food shop for guests so unless you bring stuff with you it is all about expensive dining for lunch dinner and snacks. The Bamboo (Asian) and Amici (Italian) restaurants are decent and the food varied enough for a 5 day stay, tasty and fresh. The wine list begins at A$60. Fire has a more exotic and considerably menu but the room has zero atmosphere and suffers with live music that no one ordered. Eating outside, or leaving your balcony door open can lead to seagull or cockatoo visits that are unwelcome but not the resorts fault. Wildlife, birds, bats, wallabys and marine life turtles, rays etc are on the doorstep. The diving snorkelling trips are professionally done but again more expensive that similar excursions from the mainland. My one fault was the front desk staff (S and N) who were undertrained and had poor communication skills and so booking excursions, dinner or making simple requests was too often a struggle. Many of the staff were outstanding and went above and beyond standard service. All up a 5 star resort with some refinements needed to make it beyond decent.

Just wow. My incredibly high regard for Australia is because of this resort and its amazing staff which comprised my first experience in Australia. I'm still absolutely floored by the beauty this incredible island possesses and how well the One and Only resort and team enhances every aspect of it. While this still a new resort undergoing renovations, my family and I were impressed at every turn. While the natural beauty of Hayman Island speaks for itself, the One and Only accommodations and staff made every single moment an unparalleled treasure. My family and I have traveled extensively abroad, and we have not come across a resort equipped with such an exquisite team. From housekeeping to recreation to food service, each individual from every department was incredibly capable and genuinely invested in our happiness and total experience (factors to which my family and I pay close attention). One man in particular, Luke James, the Executive Assistant Manager, deserves mentioning. From the moment we arrived to the sad moment we left, Mr. James was truly brilliant. When any circumstance of our stay began to stray from phenomenal, he was there to bring it back within seconds. At all times, my family was in great hands and without worry. One and Only Hayman Island is the real deal. My family and I cannot stop raving about the delicious food, all the activities the resort offered (our hikes, tennis games, and catamaran adventures were awesome), the staff (especially Luke James and James on the recreation team), the rich wildlife, and, of course, the views (the Great Barrier Reef is an unmatched marvel). Our only complaint is not having stayed longer. We wholeheartedly recommend this magical resort and destination.

spending a month cruising the Whistundays on our own yacht as a family , we were very excited to find that O&O would be opening towards the end of our trip so we could get some luxury rest & relaxation after a few weeks of non stop activity around the reef islands , and as a decent five star resort (up to world standards ) is sadly missing from Australia , (well i guess there is Qualia as a close attempt that fails- but anywhere that is so out of touch to think children shouldn't be welcome really shouldn't count.) it really was great news.

We have stumbled into enough soft openings around the world to know that the first month or two during that period always mean a bit of trade off, as fit outs are improved and adapted and staff and systems get into the groove , but then hey they usually give a decent discount during that period so c'est la vie, you cant have everything.

we arrived from Hamilton into the marina , which for the yachties, was nice and spacious, well laid out and staffed by a great and helpful team ( thank you daniel).

On the physical side we were pleasantly surprised, admittedly the remaining physical work was mostly being done on the hayman wing so didn't really effect us , but it really didn't impact on the overall feel of the resort IMHO. the few guys who were improving the turf and upgrading the look of the pool fencing were all fairly discreet and when encountered friendly and polite.

The butler and front desk team were on the ball, and most importantly friendly and not stiff, hitting a perfect "australian note'. we like some of the balinese, thai and malaysian resorts but that kind of super deferential service would just be out of place here in Australia.

The two bedroom suite we had was nicely designed , spacious, well laid out and impeccably clean, the housekeeping staff were on the ball and quick to accommodate some of our requests.

the restaurants are good , with food quality high (in a former life we were restauranteurs), the food isn't cheap, but it is a luxury island resort with everything shipped in, supplied by a mainland region which in itself isn't cheap so no real surprise there. personally i would think if you are losing sleep over the price of a steak but staying in a $3000 a night room, something isn't quite right, but hey thats me.

whilst we were there , amici , bamboo, fire and in room dining were all available for dinner, with more venues coming and all the food was enjoyed ..breakfast in pacific was good, lunch by the pool equally so.

waiting staff at all venues were super enthusiastic , super friendly and giving it 100% which made up for some of the procedural slickness that was missing at times and only comes from time and practice....but in the space of a few days you could see that coming already, and see them working out on the ground things that worked well and things that could be made better.

the regional manager from Dubai was in resort for the opening and did a superb of fine tuning , and I've never seen anyone cover so much ground , we were beginning to wonder if he was actually accompanied by a twin brother, if he can transmit even half of his service standards to the new team, they are on to a winner with Hayman.

we have booked for another week in the september holidays ..i reckon by the time we get back it will have matured into our new favourite bolt hole .
