Dirty floor, mouldy bed bases, glasses with cobwebs - at a 4 star hotel!
Great views but not great beds - I haven't slept on a plastic covered mattress before and I don't want to again.
The hotel itself has terrible food and the other restaurants on the island are overpriced and offer sub-standard meals.
Hotel is undergoing renovations for the next 2 years - jackhammering was also an unpleasant surprise this holiday.
Never, ever again Hamilton Island!

The mixed reviews of the Reef View caused us confusion (bordering on anxiety) before our stay.

The room is huge, which made us wonder why the wardrobe is in the bathroom. The room is generally good, but could do with a few minor improvements, such as a combination safe in place of the rusty key operated ($5 a night) one in the bathroom and the bedding makes you feel like you have stepped back in time several decades.

That said, the hotel staff are excellent, the views are amazing and the cockatoos and bats left us largely alone.

Hamilton Island was a lovely resort, with planty of activities to keep you entertained in all weathers and an excellent atmosphere. Some of the restaraunts are expensive and the quality does not always reflect the price you pay. We would recomend Romanos (Italian) for an excellent evening.

After a couple of nights we left the Reef View for a sailing Trip on the Coral Trecker. On return we stayed at the Beach Club Hotel. The Beach Club is worth the extra money and would recomend over the Reff View for couples wanting a romantic break.

My husband and I were on our honeymoon and we thought we had landed in a magical place, until we pulled up to the Reef Hotel and quickly learned that it was a DUMP. We were told this hotel was a 4-5 star resort and that it was along the lines of a Ritz Carlton (we also paid Ritz Carlton prices). I would say this was more or less along the lines of a Super 8 or Travel Lodge Motel.

The so called "honeymoon" suite was so horrible. The room was musty, not clean and the cockatoos were loud and obnoxious. You can't sit outside on your balcony because of the Sulfer Cockatoos (that attack) you and you can't walk around at night because of the fruit bats that are everywhere. We felt like we were in Jurrasic Park.

We cut our trip early and left the island 3 days early to head back to Sydney. My husband and I have travelled the world and have stayed in some of the top hotels...I STRONLY do NOT recommend wasting 1 cent on this hotel or this island. You will feel trapped.

With so many mixed reviews I began to wonder if I'd made the right decision to come to Hamilton Island for our honeymoon.

Both my partner and I have found the Island to be fun with plenty of entertainment available. For the budget conscious, you will expect to pay more, but that is to be expected on an Island.

We stayed in the Reef View hotel, highly recommended, clean and friendly, cooperative staff.

In terms of eating, there is a good range of food available. We ate at four different venues and would rate the Romano's Italian Restaurant as our favourite.

The Denison Star dining experience was our special treat to ourselves and recommended although you do pay for what you get.
Another recommended tour is the trip to Whitehaven beach and chalkies beach for some snorkelling for $70/half day.

For good old fashioned portions of food and reasonable beer prices venture to the Yacht club - a Chicken Parmy will set you back $16.50 and the beer $4.50 for a VB stubby. You don't book but rock up around 6pm to guarantee yourself a table.

For those on a budget, there is a general store that is provides the essentials plus more. Under the Yacht club is a bottle shop selling everything from slabs of beer to spirits at slightly inflated prices. For example, a slab of XXXX is 37 bucks and 42 bucks for Tooheys extra dry.

All the bars run a happy hour which surprisingly don't coincide with one another. A bar crawl is in order beginning about 3:30pm at the Island bar and then moving on to the others. A cocktail will set you back about $10.50 during happy hour and a beer about $5 / stubby. Most main meals you can expect to pay about $25-30.

Hamilton Island isn't everyones cup of tea, especially if you are budget conscious and expecting mainland prices. We knew that when we came here and budgeted accordingly.

The weather has been spot on - 27 degrees, mostly sunny.

Hope you find this beneficial.

Hello, I just returned of a 2 day stay at the Hamilton Islands, Reef View Hotel.

The location is just great, the view is unbelieveable good. And the great barrier reef is something everybody should have seen..

However on the hotel you can make some comments: The size of the room is very nice however it is very old. The pictures you find on this side are really true, so things like old beds, minibars and safe etc. The rooms are clean. I would compare it with a Hampton Inn or a good Super 8 hotel.

The staff is also VERY BAD throughout the island. It are all kids working here, between 17 and 20 years of age. The average time they work here is only 3 months since then they get bored with the place. They really don't care about anything.

If you ask me the question if I would recommend this place to others I think my answer would be: 'it depends' If you understand that going to places like these will always mean you will pay too much for what you get and that you are going here to see the Great Barrier Reef and just need a place to sleep it is fine.
If you think you are going to a great resort and relax and enjoy the resort itself then I would say look for something else...
