My daughter and her partner stayed at the Reef View hotel for their wedding and follow on honeymoon during mid-late Sep 2012. They were lucky enough to be accommodated in a suite on the 19th floor. The quality of the room was magnificent and the views were awesome and made for some amazing photo shots (see attached photo). The staff in all of the hotel facilities were immaculate, well trained, very helpful and polite and are a credit to the hotels training staff and management. The location of the hotel is superb, being close to a large number of facilities for swimming (ocean or several pools), eating, walking and relaxing. The wedding ceremony was conducted on 'Catseye Beach' which is directly opposite this hotel which made the logistics of bridal preparation and walking my daughter from room to beach seamless. I highly recommend this hotel - great quality, great staff and superb location.

Room Tip: The quality and views from the upper floors are amazing.

My husband and I stayed at The Reef View Hotel for 5 days last week to attend a wedding on the island. There is no doubt this hotel is in a prime position with amazing views of the beach which I can understand is why it is priced the way it is, and we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a coral sea view room which was much appreciated. The hotel has some good facilities, restaurants and gardens but the rooms, decor and building itself are dated and I think require a refurb to truly claim the 4 star status it currently has. Everything from the interior, furniture used and the elevators scream 'old' and 'worn'. The room itself is big and we loved the 2x queen sized beds, but the bathroom was a total disappointment. The only thing it had going for it was that it was big - with bathtub, separate shower, double basins, toilet separated again behind another door. The disappointments were in the dated fixtures, the cracked and marked floor and wall tiles that looked about 20 years old as they were so scuffed they looked dirty but in fact they were clean and just marked from so much use. The mold residue around the toilet flush buttons and shower hinges was awful. Surely they could upgrade the bathrooms? Even the toilet itself was a dingy plastic seat. The windows in the bathrooms faced the open hallway and because of the mesh above the windows, it meant you could hear anyone walking down late at night or at the crack of dawn - talking or footsteps regardless of if you kept the bathroom door closed. It just didn't feel nice to be in. Thankfully we didn't spend so long in the rooms itself. The lifts took forever at time. The Sails restaurant is where we had our buffet breakfast each morning and there was plenty on offer - savoury and sweet - so we looked forward to that each morning. The pool at the Outrigger was good - although we stuck to the area in front of the pool bar to avoid the screaming kids down the other end and the music from the bar drowned out the noise. Overall it was a pleasant experience at the hotel, but with the amount we paid for the room I don't think it is anything worth raving on about. Most of our friends who stayed at the same hotel experienced the same feelings as above. Only the bride and groom who stayed in the level 18 more deluxe room had a better experience - and we saw their room - it was awesome in comparison - updated furniture and much nicer bathroom (no mold in sight). But for over $500 a night you wouldn't expect anything less I guess. Oh and the service - some great guys at the concierge and reception. Outrigger breakfast buffet a bit slow to retrieve the used plates - the seagulls and cockatoos usually got to them first which prompted them to collect. The Outrigger pool bar music man was great entertainment also during happy hour.

Room Tip: Coral sea views a must to make it worthwhile, the higher the better.

Great views, super sized rooms, new decor and a beautiful through breeze. Whilst the hotel is 20+ years old the rooms are great again with their refresh and they provide a fantastic outlook and overview of the locale. I stayed on the 16th floor it is excellent. Love all the fresh air with the room design being able to have fresh air from two locations in the room. Breakfast buffet a little overly busy and we had to queue a couple of days - but it was peak season and school holidays were in full swing. Highly recommend the accommodation, particularly how well it is priced.

Hi becinsydney,

Thank you very much for your brilliant review of Reef View Hotel on Hamilton Island.
I really do think that we offer great value, especially when you take into inclusions such as breakfast and watersports equipment. The fact that the airlines often offer discounted flights as low as $49 means that Hamilton Island is more affordable than ever.

My staff and I will be happy to see you again when you return.

My mother planned a 5 night stay to celebrate her 60th Birthday. There were 5 of us, including 2 children under six. She paid extra for the 2 rooms we had so we got a view of the Coral Sea. I think each room was around $500 a night, and this is where my cringing began.

There was nobody to greet us (or carry our luggage) after Jetstar seriously messed up our flight, resulting in a 5 hour delay. Instead we were greeted by singlet and board short wearing men covered in tattoos, gripping cans of XXXX, having a drink in the lift area!

The room was fine, clean and airy but was not luxurious in any way. The bathroom was large but 'refurbished' rather than renovated, no robes. The TV had terrible service and wifi was beyond expensive. It's true there was a 'slight damp smell' after returning from a day out but this is true for most tropical destinations. It puzzled me that our rooms were not serviced until after 3pm daily which really seemed inconvenient for everyone involved (including the cleaners!)

I think the key point I want to make about this hotel is that it is very very pricey for what you get. The food in the buffet restaurant is only one step above school camp food and I wouldn't say table manners are a priority for many guests. There are lots of screaming kids and food on the ground, I didn't even want to put my handbag down. There is very little available in the way of fresh, healthy food and it's sort of ironic to go to a tropical resort to be offered tinned fruit. If you like deep-fried, high carb, white bread kind of food in large quantities this is the place for you.

The sound of golf carts everywhere at all times of day is annoying and frankly the tourist part of the resort is so walkable it's sort of embarrassing that the island hasn't 'greened' these last few years and moved down the path of offering bikes and decent footpaths for pedestrians.

There is so much more I could say about about Hamilton Island as a destination but it is not the fault of the hotel. HI is a place of intense natural beauty but it is blighted by the man-made and the target customer it attracts, seriously consider your reasons for putting down the money before visiting.

In summary, I have stayed at impressive full-service hotels in New York for less than this daily cost. Of course I could stay in Asia for much less but I want to reinforce the argument that Hamilton Island as a whole is not a good value holiday, and its tourism strategy is now old-fashioned - based on the fish-in-a-barrel approach. My recommendation is to consider other options in the area, it's such a beautiful part of Australia and deserves a visit.

Hi miffymoo,

Thank you for your feedback. Happy 60th birthday to your mother – thank you for choosing to stay with us to celebrate.

We usually only receive great feedback about our breakfast and we try hard to cater to every taste but I understand that the not everyone will be happy and I’m sorry that you weren’t totally satisfied. Please be aware that we have healthy choices such as yoghurt, fruit and wholemeal bread.

Let me assure you that Hamilton Island is committed to the environment and we have been for a lot longer than it has been fashionable to be “green”. We have cutting edge self-managed recycling programme and facilities on island and nearly all of our golf carts are now electric. 70% of Hamilton Island is protected National Park that is never to be developed and we are very mindful of the native species and their habitats.

I hope that you will stay with us again the next time you are on Hamilton Island.

Reef view rooms have a great view. Large rooms with bar fridge and low shower head (grr for anyone over 5ft lol) Rex one of the island shuttle drivers gave a guided tour. The best driver we had on the regular shuttles. . There are numerous pools. Would imagine more pools needed for a relaxing swim in peak season. Plan to come back for a longer stay next time :-)

Before I begin my review, be warned.....if you are afraid of heights do not book a "reef view" room on the higher floors. The only lifts are all glass on the outside of the building and are very scary! Luckily we were on the third floor but we dared ourselves once to travel to the top and we were both terrified. Now the review: I stayed on a three night package in September. The package included daily breakfast and two boat trips. I shared the room with my adult son. The room was ideal for this as it was modern, attractive and very large, with two queen beds. It had plenty of seating and a balcony. The bathroom was also large, with a separate toilet. The staff are well informed, polite and friendly. There is a tours desk and a concierge on duty to help with any questons. The buffet breakfast was fabulous and as businesses on the island seem to be linked, you could breakfast at the Reef View or at Sails or the Wildlife Cafe. You just give your room number wherever you choose. The only reason I have given a rating of four, not five is that I suspect our room was one of the worst positioned in the hotel. We took a cheaper "garden view" room which means it is on a lower floor but the view was okay anyway. However our room was right at the end of the corridor and outside the door was looking down on a big metal roof with the building's airconditioning system on it. This was rather unsightly and made a constant hum that could be heard in the bathroom. Two floors below our balcony was the kitchen and the smell of frying oil coming from its exhaust fan was very stong. If you stay at the hotel your airport transfers are efficiently arranged for you and there are facitities so you can store things and shower after you check out, so you can swim etc right up until you go to the airport.

Room Tip: Choose lower floors if you can't cope with glass "viewing" lifts. Rooms 1 to 14 better...

Hi Tassietraveller_9,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Reef View Hotel with Tripadvisor visitors. Thank you also for your kind words about well informed, polite and friendly staff.
It's so good to hear how much you enjoyed breakfast and your room as well.
The design of our hotel means that many Garden View rooms still have ocean views overlooking the hotel pool and tropical palm trees. I'm sorry that the placement of your room was not to your liking.
Thanks for the feedback regarding the frying oil. While we have not had feedback of this nature before we will use this as an opportunity to review.
