I spent three nights at the Reef View Hotel with my partner, mother and brother in May 2011. We booked two Coral View rooms (on the 17th floor) overlooking the bay. From the moment we landed on Hamilton Island to the moment we left our experience of this hotel was extremely positive. The hotel staff (particular thanks go to the General Manager Matt and Emma) was charming and very helpful, always willing to tend to our needs (e.g. recommending and booking restaurants, booking Great Barrier Reef tours etc).
Unfortunately I was sick for part of the trip, and the staff was more than helpful in helping me out .
The rooms were immaculately clean, large and well appointed, with spectacular views over the bay.
Admittedly, the hotel is located in a building which is still a bit stuck in the '80s, but management have done a great job to keep the rooms and the structure updated and current.
This is a fantastic hotel if you want some luxury on the island without totally breaking the bank.

Room Tip: Coral View Rooms, upper floors.

We are just about to check out from the Reef View and are a little disappointed that we did not book for longer.
Our accomodation was great - we were given a 15th floor room and the views are outstanding. The room was clean and we were exceptionally well provisioned with towels, sheets and toiletries. The room was well serviced and all the housekeeping staff were courteous and freindly to us. We had requested a cot and high chair for our 8 month old and they were ready and waiting for us on arrival. The breakfast was excellent, as was that at Hamilton Island Wildlife Park. The staff were freindly and helpful.
Hamilton Island, though, is not cheap. The beer in the hotel averaged out at AUD8 However, this has to be expected - it reminds me of ski resorts in that the goods and services are expensive to get to the resort and there is a monopoly supply. It is a premium location and that is reflected in the prices charged.
All in all we are delighted that we came to Hamilton Island and would have no hesitation in returning or recommending it to others. For families everything is available (at a premium price), but would recommend taking as much as possible - we took formula and pouch baby food.
We can also recommend the Whitehaven Beach trip and the Fantasea Reef cruise. We took baby with us (and fully laden pram) and the staff were helpful and accomodating on both excursions. As I write this I am gazing out on a sun dappled azure blue sea fringed with green and verdant hills wishing we were here for longer. A truly beautiful spot.

We absolutely loved Hamilton Island and the hotel is in a great location and the shuttle buses stop right at the lobby. The view from our room on the 12th floor was amazing! We also loved the outside elevators which allowed us to enjoy the view of this beautiful island every time. The only thing is that our room was right next to the elevators and that was pretty annoying sometimes. We went to change the room the first night we were there and the woman at the front desk was rude and told us that the two corner elevators do get shut off during nighttime and to try sleeping one night. After unpacking so many times during our trip we just decided to deal with it but I wish she was more helpful. On the positive we loved the balcony view and the room layout/furniture and the large bathroom. We enjoyed having the breakfast downstairs which was already included. The service and the food was great, lots of breakfast options for sure.

Room Tip: All rooms have views but the higher the better!

We stayed here for two nights as part of a media group. The rooms are unbelievably spacious with lovely balconies facing the ocean but the hotel itself is nothing much, Very old and needs some upgrading! Good breakfast spread and internet at the buisness centre.

Attention HIE management:

I realise a lot of your staff are transient and do not stick around long enough to be trained properly, but when guests are paying over 300 dollars per night this just does not cut it.

Most things that I have highlighted below were corrected, but by day 2 I was wondering how so many stuff-ups could happen in the first place.

My room was nice but not special, clean but not immaculate. It's saving grace was the size and the view.

I am now into my 4th day of 5 and am regretting coming here. I do not mind spending more to get quality, but in the case of HI there is no marked increase the quality of the experience.

Day 1

Staff lost lunch order, burger and salad only arrived after we questioned staff about our meal. Total time 1 hr 10 mins. Neigbouring table received meal (2 salads) in 20 minutes

Baby cockroach in scotch and soda

Day 2

Requested room change due to noise from lifts. We were advised that due to 100% occupancy for the remainder of our stay we could not be moved to a different room. After 2nd night occupancy **appeared** to be significantly down

Dinner - reserved table at restaurant given away to another couple. Told by staff to maybe come back in half an hour

Day 3

Filthy juice glass at breakfast

Ordered bowl of fries for a snack. Chips were so over-cooked there was barely any white potato to be found

Booked poolside table for dinner, i.e. specifically requested a table beside the pool. Arrived ontime only to be seated at the rear of the restaurant next to the kitchen entrance. Empty tables beside the pool

Day 4

Breakfast - Was seated at table by staff, went to buffet to get food, returned to table to find it had already been given to someone else, depsite 2 full glasses of juice left on table

Waited 10 full minutes for 2 beers in Reef Lounge, gave up. 1 person on for 20-30 patrons

We travelled to Hamilton Island as part of a 24 day trip around Australia and was looking forward to spending a relaxing time at the Reef View Hotel.

Arrival and check in from the airport was arranged before hand and everything went smoothly until we entered the room. Whilst the view over the bay was good the room was very dated, unclean (dirty bathroom and blood stained bedsheets), mouldy tile grouting and flaking gloss paint work - certainly not the "wow" factor we were expecting at a 4* hotel.

We complained immediately to the check in staff which didn't resolve anything and then invited the duty manager to the room to show him the poor standard of the room. Our complaint was listened to and the manager agreed with our comments. Whilst the problems were mitigated by the manager, I wanted to leave this review to inform potential guests of the Reef View Hotel know what to expect.

Room Tip: Don't bother staying here
