This is a full family review. We all agree.

This was our first “beach” Christmas and we really wanted something special so we booked the Yacht Club on Hamilton Island hoping for an amazing, memorable Christmas dinner. We were told this is the place to be. Unfortunately, when the best part of the meal are the palate cleansers, disappointment abounds.

First the positives: It is a beautiful restaurant with a marvellous view, on the water and the staff are fantastic. Great atmosphere.

Now the food: like too many clubs: awful. A traditional Christmas meal is turkey or if in Australia, we would have expected amazing seafood such as crab, lobster or a fantastic local fish. At $150 a head, the price would suggest we were in for a good meal.

Not the case. The prawn appetizer consisted of a bland sauce and frozen, flavourless, mushy prawns. In 20 years, I have never seen my wife ask for salt because her meal was flavorless. Your choices of a main were crispy skinned duck, ham or salmon. Sitting on the ocean and your choice of fish is salmon! Probably flown in from Alaska or Canada. Nothing local. My duck was mediocre (I love duck) and the skin was soggy.

As mentioned, the only truly interesting part of the meal were the palate cleansers, oyster with a mango sorbet and a few other interesting in-between distractions – the humorous part being that every time they served it they said “enjoy your complimentary palate cleanser compliments of the chef”. Guess this was on top of the $150 per head, normally at a good restaurant that is part of the meal. What I found odd is that they only had a single seating of patrons that night, so it wasn’t like the chef was overly busy and he/she should have done a much better job.

We had a great time, laughing and enjoying Christmas as a family – but the restaurant will play no part in that memory. Like so many country clubs; great facilities and staff with massively overpriced, unmemorable, bland food.  Should have eaten at the Mariner.

Awful and a waste of money.

This is 5 Star, excellent service, great menu, wines from all over the world....great escape in air-conditioned comfort when it's 38 degrees and 90% humidity outside....great views and the opportunity for a cocktail on the deck pre dinner if watching the sun going down over a Martini is your thing. Almost faultless !

Thank tthorne
