Daydream Island Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Daydream Island
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Have just spent two nights on Daydream and had a fantastic time! The weather was perfect and so too were the gardens and views. We loved escaping the hustle and bustle and not seeing a car in sight. The decor is definitely in need of an update. The tackiness of some of it really detracts from the natural beauty that surrounds it. Even the staff uniforms are embarrassing! Not to mention the revolting tropical fish carpet on the floor of the elevators...Anyhow, our room (an ocean view balcony) was pretty standard but comfortable and quiet with an amazing view. Food is expensive and there are only two dining options of an evening (only Waterfalls buffet and Mermaids a la carte were the options when we were there). We dined at Mermaids both nights and the food was delicious! The restaurant is open air as opposed to Waterfalls which is indoor and we preferred that. At Mermaids you can pay $56.50 for a select 3 courses. We did this one night for one of us and ordered another entree to have as a main and with an alcoholic drink each the bill came to $90 which I thought was not unreasonable. The buffet breakfast was good but not great. Lots of choice both hot and cold. For lunch we grabbed pre made sandwiches from the coffee shop in the foyer ($5 each) and since it was about to close (1pm) we got them 1/2 price, Drinks are ridiculously priced. $4 for a can of coke $6 for a 600ml coke buddy. I just brought my own water bottle and drank that whilst there. Doing your own laundry is $4 a load plus $2 for powder (I took my own) and $3 to dry. We indulged in a spa treatment which was sublime and otherwise just lazed by the pool so can't really comment on the activities offered except that we gave kyaking a crack one morning (it's free) and that was a bit of fun. With a facelift, this place has a lot going for it. Be savvy. Pack as much of your own snacks and drinks as possible and play them at their own game (like taking advantage of discounted food close to closing time and set price menu options)

Within a couple of hours of arriving we knew that this place was not for us. The rooms are very old with appalling bathrooms. There was a thick brown ring around the base of the toilet and a very small shower screen on the side of the bath which did nothing to stop the flow of water from the shower making the floors hazardous. Tiny balcony with just enough room for a small table and chair but with no view (3rd floor) except for bushes right up to the edge of the balcony.
Staff wore ridiculous uniforms that would be better suited to a 1970's children's TV show, they were ill-fitting, unflattering and worst of all dirty, even while serving at the Mermaids Restaurant! The decor throughout the 'resort' was very old and Tacky obviously with the 1970 Children's TV show in mind - nothing modern and sophisticated at all. Of the two restaurants, Mermaid is supposed to be the more upmarket but the food is tasteless, overpriced and served by unfriendly, unsmiling staff. The second restaurant is the Fish Bowl, however after queuing for half hour or so just to order at the bar we gave up and didn't get tasting the food there. However the set up of the Fish Bowl is that of an old Holiday Camp from the 1970's again so there wasn't much loss. Oh, and by the way all of the piped music or live music couldn't have changed since its opening night! Ashtrays are placed every few steps, even all around the pool and beach, so everywhere you went you were breathing in someone else's smoke. This 'resort' is like walking into a Time warp nightmare from the moment you step off the ferry. The only nice thing about this island is the views across to the other islands and the anticipation of leaving it.
There were a lot of children around who seemed to have fun, so if all you want is to please the kids for a day or two maybe this would do but I'm sure there are better places.

I'm not sure I ended up in the same place as the other reviewers on this site. The place I went to had a terrible breakfast. They promote themselves as a 4 star but what sort of place checks you into breakfast and leaves you to try a find a table which you then have to clean down yourself?

Day 1 - food was cold and tasteless.
Day 2 - I went for the soft boiled eggs with toast. The eggs were undercooked and not for eating.
Day 3 - I skipped breakfast and checked out early moving to the Beach Club on Hamilton Island. A proper 4 star!

Other points, rooms are tired and need a Reno. Staff are young and under trained.

Smoking is encouraged everywhere.

They only have 2 beach cats, not the 8 shown in the photo shopped marketing image. You can't book them in advance either.

Mermaids is a full price restaurant with average food and average service. Food is served by staff in dirty uniforms.

Entertainment is so dated it is embarrassing to watch.

Fish Bowl requires you to queue up for 20 mins to get a drink.

We invited the manager to compensate us considering we were leaving a day early, but she declined to do so, citing the breakfast as one of the hotels strong points. After reading the reviews on this site I can't blame her.

I was pleasantly surprised when we first arrived as it was bigger than I thought and we got the family garden room we requested on the top floor (3307 & 3308). We asked for top floor as another review I read said something about the ground floor rooms being damp. The rooms were big, everything was very well maintained. We went to breakfast and our rooms were beautifully made up when we returned.

Weather was absolutely perfect (Aug 2013). Downside was the pools were too cold to swim in! This was a real shame as that's what our young children wanted to do everyday. They should heat the pools during winter months. Everyone gathered in the spa pools (3), which were great but not for a good swim. Carers at kids club were excellent. Optional extras (trips to hamilton etc) seemed bit pricey.

Buffet meals at Waterfalls restaurant for breakfast and dinner were great, a lot of choice. However, it wasn't open every night. Options were booking into Mermaids (remember to book, even when quiet!!) or going to other side of island to Fish Bowl (great family restaurant). Choice over 8 nights was a little limited. They didn't offer any food room service.

We did a one day trip to Hamilton Island and the kids loved it. In hindsight, I think I would have split our trip 6 nights daydream / 2 nights hamilton to mix it up a bit.

Our package deal included a free family portrait that was taken on arrival on daydream. However, when we went to pick it up at the end of the trip, they told us it had been deleted - as they only keep them for 4 days?! If you get offered a free portrait, make sure you pick it up at the start of your trip :)

Staff seemed to be quite friendly but quiet. Not like Fiji where you get to know the different characters of people and have some fun with them.

The day spa was beautiful with professional staff.

Watch out for the cockatoos and remember to keep your balcony door shut when you leave the room. I witnessed 4 cockatoos going into a room stealing all the bar food! It was funny to watch, sorry for the people that had to pay for it though.

We did enjoy our trip overall and a great spot for families.

We have just returned from our second visit to Daydream Island. Our first visit was with our two sons aged about 8 and 14 at the time (we still say this was one of the most wonderful family holidays that we had as there were plenty of activities for us to participate in as a family group and all our days were spent taking part in the well organised activities which were all most enjoyable for us all). Now 23 years later we have just returned home after another memorable holiday to Daydream Island as ''oldies'' travelling alone. Again we had the most enjoyable time despite the sometimes showery and windy weather as this is a beautiful part of Australia and the perfect spot to unwind and relax away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The resort is very well maintained and clean and the staff wonderful and so very attentive and friendly. All in all we can not find a negative thing to say about Daydream Island and we hope to be able to return again in the future.

Amazing holiday with our 5 children aged 9 - 14. Staff were fantastic, Attentive, helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Island was all we could have asked for and more. 9 days of bliss. So much to do, and we did it all. The kids didn't ask for one thing and we also relaxed. Very sad to have left but met some great people. Premixed drinks were a little pricey, but when they have to get it all to the island I guess its understandable but we would have bought more had it been a little cheaper.

Absolutely lovely destination, unfortunately the resort is dated. Rooms are simple with early nineties styling. Bathroom was mouldy, requested housekeeping address it but when it was left untouched made the same request to reception, with the same result. Meals expensive with only a few options of restaurants open at any one time. If resort was given an update would consider staying again.
