This Island is very beautiful and the resort has the potential to be world beating. The food was great and the available services and activities were good. The accommodation is a little crowded and they could take some tips from some of the better African safari camps that make you feel as though you're really secluded and have complete privacy when in your accommodation. The beaches are beautiful and the helicopter out to the island gives beautiful views of the clear water and sea bed.

We were excited about our trip to Heron Island and it delivered! Such an amazing place to relax and unwind. Highlights were swimming with reef sharks and sting rays! Yes we were freaked out but it was awesome! Great spot for kids. We will be back!

One more thing ticked off the bucket list and so worthwhile. Arriving at the Baillie Bar and being presented with a cool drink then casting your eyes on the view was amazing. I had to remind myself where I was - on a tiny island, on the Barrier and all this great stuff around me - quite amazing. All the staff were great. Jason seemed to be 'the jack of all trades' while we were there and he was very informative about the reef, the birds and the research station. Everything was great - especially the snorkelling around the wreck. Coffee was bad and always cold.

Room Tip: we had room 164 and although in July it didnt get any sun, it was quiet and suited us just fine.

Hi Clare

Its is so good to read that the location had such an impact on you, it is so unique yet accessible.

I will pass your comments onto our staff as I know they will appreciate that feedback. Jason is sensational, we agree.........

We spent 3 days on Heron Island in mid-May, right before
they closed for awhile. I agree with others who say this is
not a luxury experience in terms of the accommodations
or dining. But if you're a nature lover and want to have the experience of staying
on a coral cay right on the Great Barrier Reef, this is the place to
be!

The staff were all very friendly and we especially loved all the
activities on the island that are free. Doing the reef walk is not
to be missed. We learned so much about the many varieties of
sea cucumbers and we saw beautiful clams and starfish. We also
did a guided birdwatching walk and attended a turtle talk
in the evening. The young women who were the guides for these
activities were fantastic- very knowledgeable and friendly!

We thought the food was fantastic. The dining room is not fancy
but a clean and pleasant place to eat. The rooms are average.
We also went out on their snorkeling boat a few times. That
was terrific. It's only a 10-min ride out to the place we snorkeled.
We saw tons of wildlife- turtles, sharks, and many varieties
of fish.

Though I was a little disappointed initially we arrived as I
thought at these prices the accommodations would be much
more luxurious, in the end, we absolutely loved Heron and enjoyed
it for its beautiful location, natural surroundings and friendly staff.

Thank you for taking the time to review Heron Island, it is appreciated.

It is very pleasing to know that our young friendly team looked after you so well as we have invested in that area, and I have passed on your comments. Also great to read that you thought highly of the Food and service in Shearwater Restaurant - another area that we have worked on constantly improving.

Your right, Heron is amazing with its abundance of Marine and Bird life and perfect for nature lovers.

We were on the first boat for the season too. The last time I was here was 21 years ago pregnant with my first child. He came with us this time along with his younger sister. They learned to scuba dive and we cruised the surface in our snorkelling gear. Turtles, Rays, whales, eels and many brightly coloured fish as well as incredible beds of coral just at the doorstep. Fantastic. The beauty spa was a treat too. The food was good until about the 5th day when the same daily menu became overwhelming. A number of people mentioned this. You should really consider offering more frequent buffets where people can choose their own portion size and variety of food. A yoga room would be great too. How perfect to start or finish the day with yoga at such a beautiful place as Heron?

Just came back from my 4th holiday to Heron Island. This time it was for my honeymoon. We were on the first boat for the new season. Loved the peacefulness without all the birds in winter but i still believe that summer is the time to go - there is a lot more wildlife and marine life to see (breading season). We had the bed and breakfast package and it was perfect - we had yummy pizzas from the bar for lunch. Dinners were amazing - the food has always been spectacular. All the staff on the island were friendly and helpful. Only negative was that we had to wait 1.5 hours for the boat to arrive. That was disappointing we were made to wait so long - but i felt that it was the Gladstones marina fault there. Overall i love heron - next time travelling by sea plane!

Room Tip: Doesn't matter as you wont be in them much!!

Stunning island. Amazing natural wildlife. My husband and friends actually saw a nesting turtle on the beach. Beautiful sealife, sharks and fish.

However - when they say its noisy at night, elieve them. Also - its really really not a luxury resort. The rooms are basic to say the least, and the food is pretty average.

Also be prepared for the boat ride -it's 75k of incredibly rough seas. Take seasickness tablets. I've never been sick on a boat before - even while sailing in races - however almost everyone on that boat was sick, including me.

I noticed you stayed a year ago, I can assure you we have made significant progress with guest room soft furnishings and in particular, our Menus and Food service.

One thing that hasn't changed is the BIrds, we are still a sanctuary and share the Island with a magnificent array of Noddy Turns, Mutton Birds and of course Herons..........we sincerely trust that wont stop you from visiting us again.

You were indeed unlucky with the voyage over on the Ferry, May through September - our Winter - is normally the best sailing conditions.
