This was my best holiday yet. It is good in the day but when the day-trippers leave, it is like having the entire island to yourself. Paradise on an Island!

Room Tip: Both Types of rooms are just as good.

Stayed here to celebrate wedding anniversary. As everyone else says, the staff are brilliant: polite, enthusiastic and happy. Yes, it's best after day trippers leave, but there is so much to do in such a small place that nothing else matters. Don't miss the sunset cocktails nor the superb food in Emeralds restaurant. The chef even surprised us with an incredible dessert for our 25 years celebration. That was a wonderful bonus ( thanks chef!). Jake and Sophie were very amenable staff- not sure they leave as they always seemed to be there to assist in the restaurant. The room was fantastic: very clean and well-appointed. The birds....well, just ignore them if they bother you- it's all part of a natural, unspoilt environment. PS. See the reef sharks at 5pm fish feeding and ogle the enormity of Gazza! Thank you to everyone at Green Island Resort.

Room Tip: Reef suites are wonderful.

We stayed for 3nights and we were offered local rates as we only live in Cairns, so very reasonable. Tthe staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food in the restaurant was delicious, breakfast was especially yummy. The island is so peaceful after the the tourist boats leave and we loved the fish feeding and sunset drinks on the beach.

They charge $620 for tourists and $299 for Australians - not sure how the can justify that without insulting your intelligence!

Crocodile Park on the island is excellent.

Island really fills up with day-trippers and the facilities only open when they arrive and they close when they go.

Food in restaurant very expensive and of average quality.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms may be more private. In our ground level room our bathroom and toilet were overlooked...

My family and I really enjoyed the island. The staffs of the resort are very friendly and helpful. Only the resturant was not very good! We did have a great time!

Having visited Green Island as a day-tripper in the late 70’s when the island facilities were fairly run down, I was not expecting much from the upgrade that occurred in the early 90’s. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that the makeover was significant, and even now 15 years on, the Resort and public spaces are well maintained, clean and comfortable. This must be one of the world’s first eco-sensitive tourism Resorts, developed well before it became a trend and now an imperative for island living.
We found the arrival experience to be very welcoming, efficient and friendly from all staff associated with both Great Adventures (The Ferry / Quickcat service) and Green Island Resort (I understand they are both owned by the one parent Company – Quicksilver). This began with the check in / bag drop at the Ferry Terminal in Cairns, continued onboard the Ferry with a guide explaining the islands attractions individually to all guests and day trippers, culminating in the personal welcome by Resort Staff on the Pier who explained the many facilities and activities available on the Island as we walked to our room. Our luggage arrived shortly thereafter.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the rooms are no longer new, but what the interiors lack in contemporary finishes and accessories are more than compensated for in the generous room sizes and storage space. The King bed was comfortable, the sheets were fresh and clean, and A/C and ceiling fan kept the internal air temperature at a comfortable level during the day and night despite the hot humid conditions we encountered outside.
Green Island is the only Coral Cay on the Great Barrier Reef with rainforest vegetation due to its relatively close proximity to the mainland. However it’s the ocean habitat that most visitors come for, and despite the millions of tourists who’ve visited the island over the years, there is still an abundance of marine life to experience. The accommodation package covers free hire of snorkel equipment, and during the wet season, full body stinger suits
On the recommendation of staff, we walked for 5 minutes to the south eastern tip of the island to “drift dive” with the incoming tide over the seagrass beds along the north shore back towards the Resort. This is best done when the tide is reasonably full, otherwise as we discovered, it can be too shallow in some areas and you end up crawling over the sea grass rather than drifting. Even so there was still plenty to see including a grazing turtle, stingrays and numerous varieties of fish. On a subsequent dive we headed out into the deeper water on the southern side of the jetty near the feeding platform (avoid the northern side between 9am – 4.30pm as this is where the Ferries and other boats pull in). There are some coral beds in this area and a range of larger fish including some of those attracted to the evening feeding session such as the sleek black GT’s, one of the fastest fish on the GBR.
The Hotel package included a number of activities which are well worth doing. The fish feeding at 5pm everyday is a must, the fish are well attuned to this daily ritual and put on a great show as they chase the specially formulated pellets and fresh fish that are fed to them. We even had several black tipped reef sharks join in the frenzy on our visit, and despite their reputation for being at the top of the marine food chain, they were soundly beaten to the food by other much faster fish.
The fish feeding is followed by sunset drinks on the beach offering very drinkable Australian Sparkling wine and orange, mango, pineapple and apple juices.
The resident naturalist who conducts the fish feeding was also is the guide on the night tour. This is an interesting and enjoyable experience as he educates on everything from the leaves used by aborigines to stun the lagoon fish, to the solar constellations in the night sky. He also has an uncanny ability to flash his torch out onto the pitch dark water and instantly locate grazing sea turtles.
The glass bottom boat tour is also a great way to experience the underwater world without the need to don diving gear. The operators obviously know where the best corals are located, and provide a very interesting commentary on all the living organisms that thrive on the reef from coral polyps to clown fish.
Probably the biggest surprise of all during our stay at Green Island was the quality of the food and service offered at the restaurant, Emeralds. Whilst the prices reflect this, we have stayed at numerous other island resorts where the dining experience is less than ideal as there are no other restaurants to compete with. Emeralds offers a good contemporary Australian menu with an equally impressive wine list.
Whilst Green Island is not an exclusive island resort and must be shared during the day with numerous mainland visitors, the early mornings and late afternoons are very peaceful and quiet. We spent under an hour walking around the island one morning and were rewarded with the sight of numerous sting rays, shovel nosed sharks and other fish feeding in the shallows.
The main reason for us choosing to stay at Green Island Resort was to use it as a base to explore the more popular outer reefs which are less than an hour away by Ferry. Whilst the diving on the island is not in the same league as the stunning experience offered on the outer reefs, it is certainly worthwhile, and highly recommended.

We stayed on Green Island with three children in adjoining rooms and between the very private resort pool and the many activities around the island, we found time for a quiet drink and grazing platter at sunset for the two of us. Our whole family loved every minute of our time on the island and we enjoyed all the island had to offer at our own pace. The snorkelling was amazing and very easy for all age groups and once the day trippers left, the ambience and serenity were perfect for a relaxing getaway. We will definately return as soon as we can. We loved it!!!
