“Great Family Experience on a Budget”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

My family (incl 3 kids aged 13/11/7) were on a family caravanning holiday to Qld from Victoria and were fortunate enough to check out GKI Holliday Village. We had a great time exploring beautiful beaches. Self catering helped keep within budget. Geoff and staff couldn't have been more welcoming - providing use of snorkelling gear, paddle boards, kitchen, all facilities, etc.
Highly recommend this as an option to all travelling families. Great vibe at camp kitchen, great to meet other travellers, all full of smiles. Loved the sunsets over fishermans beach. Kids rate as trip highlight which included Fraser Is, Noosa, Rainbow Beach etc. Thanks for great memories.

If you're looking for a touristy, character-less, metropol akin to the Gold Coast, this place is not for you. My family wanted a rustic hideaway to take us back to the basics and that's what we got at the GKI Holiday Village. We stayed in the house and found it clean, in great working order and adorable. The hard wood floors, the lourver windows and wooden decking gave it a nostalgic beach house feel, while keeping my two babies safely contained. The ocean is just a short, but beautiful, walk away; complete with bright blue butterflies. The BBQ area and amenities were spotless and the local wildlife kept the kids entertained for hours. Snorkeling was incredible. I saw stingrays, massive turtles, and schools of fish so bright I couldn't believe they weren't battery powered. The entire island has such a relaxed feel, with few tourists, hardly any vehicles and only one or two shops. Take your supplies with you, but plan for a meal at the cafe or the pizza shop. Geoff was so accommodating, our only regret was leaving too soon. Do yourself a favor and visit this incredible venue before they reopen the soul-less resort down the road.

I'm Australian but live in Germany and went to the GKI Holiday Village with my 12 year old daughter because I wanted her to experience some of the nice things I miss about my country and we had a ball. We also met up with some of my old friends who came with their families. We all had a really great time!! We didn't go there looking for a resort with cocktails beside the pool, we wanted good weather, nice swimming, good snorkeling, bush walking, nature, animals, empty beaches, fishing, birds......And we really felt like we had a lot of luck with our choice of Keppel and also the Holiday Village, it was much better than I had hoped.
Geoff and his crew at the Island were unbelievably friendly and generous. Geoff took us all for a snorkel at the reef observatory on a neighboring Island and part of the way around Keppel in his big Tinnie, we all individually tried to pay him for it and we tried to tip them when we were leaving but they wouldn't take our money, a new experience for me. The Village is very natural with Curlews and Possums and trees all over the place as well as Kookaburra's, Lorikeets etc....The beaches to the front and side are long and sandy and nice with clear blue water and few people. At the end of the beaches is good snorkelling with quite large reefs, the Coral is mostly white but we saw really a lot of fish of endless types and always Sting Rays, Turtles, Squid......Was great!!! The Village is quite basic but comfortable and kept very clean, we stayed in tents and they were great, with the full moon you could clearly look out in every direction, almost like sleeping in a swag. All the staff were really nice and went out of their way to be helpful and friendly, when we left on the Ferry 3 or 4 of them stayed and waved us off, another first for me.
So if you want to go somewhere that gives you quite a good taste of Australia, go here!!! If you want shopping, pools, cocktails and polished shoes then probably the Gold Coast is more your style. I would say this place is one of the last Islands in Queensland where you can have this quite natural experience. If I could give these guys 10 points out of 5 I would ;-)

Room Tip: Tents were good. The Units were far better and bigger than expected from the info on the website wit...

This has to be my one of favourite places in my two year trip around the whole country.
NO as someone else has said there is no power after 11 and there are no TV or radio's but that is beauty of it all. if i wanted all that then i would stay at home.
instead there are amazing white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters to swim in. around the coral areas there are plenty of turtles to snorkel with and plenty of fish to keep you amused for hours.
if that doesnt interest you then there are also plenty of bush walks to be done. ranging from 1/2 hour to 5-6 hours or all day if your up for it.
i really enjoyed the tents as my accomodation as i felt like i was part of nature but just in a comfy bed.
i think the "backpackers" did a great job of keeping the place tidy and were very polite and helpfull.
to sum it up this has to be the place to go to if your after a quite and peacefull holiday away from all the chaos and noise of everyday life and just want to relax and unwind.
i also cant forget to mention Geoff, what a character and great bloke. he always has YOUR best interests at heart and will do anything to help you out if he can.
Cheers Geoff, Ray and Jo and all the staff.

Room Tip: Explain to Geoff who you are and what your planes are on the island and he'll try and get the mo...

Looking for 5 star resort? Go to Mackay & Whitsundays. If you want the quiet alternative, Keppel Holiday Village is the all star answer. If you want no TV, no radio, enjoy being in an onsite tent, cabin or dorm, taking your own food and drink across on the ferry, basking on" your own" beach, and reef snorkelling when it suits you, its heaven! Simple life, shared kitchen and eating area and abolutions. Need torches as generator goes off ...Wow...an opportunity to listen to possums, curlews owls and nearby ocean!!
Walk to main snorkelling reefs Monkey Bay or Shelving, or hire a water taxi to drop you off for morning/day at idyllic Butterfly or Wyndham's Cove or Halfway Isle. Or just hike on the many tracks and beaches across the island.
And of course Robinson Crusoe (AKA Geoff) and pocket rocket (AKA Jo) are there to ensure your stay is enjoyable, undertake minor medical repairs, find a sausage or chocolate if you run out of food!!
Unfortunately a huge resort is planned down the beach with all the canned entertainment, buffet food, alcohol and glitz of other barrier reef venues. We had 5 days on the island and needed a few more.... so we will be back to our Treasured Island regularly whilst it is the quiet alternative. Thanks guys

Room Tip: We stayed in a double bed tent. But ask on booking there are many options.

Great Keppel Island is a beautiful spot with beautiful beaches but I think the tents were over priced and I think the place suits backpackers more but they can't afford the tents so they work for free accommodation. The island seems to have seen better days as there are 2 abandoned resorts which was really strange. Maybe the tourists don't come because of the prices.... of anything... It's not even on the beach nor has beach views. Disappointed.

Very basic accommodation at resort prices. There is no power after the generators are switched off at 11pm. You will need a torch which should be supplied. Couldn't recommend this place at all. Better option is to have a look at some of the private houses for rent. The island is great though and the food is nice from the pizza place if it is open.
