We spent a lovely afternoon at Fitzroy island. We went over on the Fast cat at 11am which arrived at the island just before midday. Back in Cairns the weather was overcast and spitting with rain. The sky and sea were gray and gloomy but over on Fitzroy the sun was shining and the sea was a beautiful blue. We headed straight over to Foxy's restaurant for lunch. Service was a bit slow and food was average, but the view out to sea was nice.
We did the glass bottom boat tour but visibility was poor. Several places that the boat regularly stops at for coral viewing just had no visibility at all. The coral we did see was not what you hope for - very colorless and not many fish either.
I recommend the walk to Nudey's Beach - lovely walk through the forest, lots of steps so not for any one with mobility issues. The beach itself is very picturesque and nice for photos.
That was all we had time for as the last fast cat back to Cairns is at 5pm. A full day there would have been good (depending on the weather). Definitely a pretty place to spend a day at.

For us never been at a tropical island before, this was just fantastic. The beach, scuba diving, the turtle rehabilitation, the rain forest, wildlife, walk to the summit. An amazing experience.

Could not find a better place to write this review. Went to the Island with a package offered by the hotel, which included transportation, and lunch at their beach front bar Foxy's. As a trip, tripadvisor only includes raging thunder, which is not the only option.
Arriving on the island, you have multiple hike options, including small, secluded and beautiful Nudey Beach (not a nudist beach, by the way), with crystal clear waters, and a seashell beach (take a pool shoe of some kind, it hurts your feet).
You can spend a full day travelling around the island, beaches are beautiful if hard to walk, vegetation and birds also nice, views from the peak and lighthouse gorgeous.
The small bar has very good food, with a spectacular view, but one of the dirtiest bathrooms I have ever seen. Disgusting! They had another one by the pool in the main hotel area, but they make very clear you are not welcome in that area if you are not sleeping there. The only blemish to an otherwise great day trip.

The park is wonderful to hike in and up to the summit and lighthouse, or the other walks to the secret garden and Nudey Beach. Birds, wildlife and the fringing reef surrounding the island are great. Well worth the visit.

Travelled to Fitzroy island via Sunlover Reef cruise, basically a ferry service that lets you off at the island around 10 and picks you up at 4. Fitzroy is amazing. The beaches are covered in pieces of coral from the reef ranging from small to very large. However, you aren't allowed to collect it as the island is a national park and protected. There is a nice snorkeling beach right next to the pier. There is also a bar (Foxy's) where you can eat and get a drink. There is a hotel on the island too.
The island has various trails including the Nudie Beach trail and the Lighthouse Trail. Both are VERY strenuous. Nudie Beach trail is posted as a moderate hike but don't be fooled. It is very difficult and exhausting.
Fitzroy is a fun way to spend a day away from a lot of the commercialism of Cairns.
