The park is wonderful to hike in and up to the summit and lighthouse, or the other walks to the secret garden and Nudey Beach. Birds, wildlife and the fringing reef surrounding the island are great. Well worth the visit.

Travelled to Fitzroy island via Sunlover Reef cruise, basically a ferry service that lets you off at the island around 10 and picks you up at 4. Fitzroy is amazing. The beaches are covered in pieces of coral from the reef ranging from small to very large. However, you aren't allowed to collect it as the island is a national park and protected. There is a nice snorkeling beach right next to the pier. There is also a bar (Foxy's) where you can eat and get a drink. There is a hotel on the island too.
The island has various trails including the Nudie Beach trail and the Lighthouse Trail. Both are VERY strenuous. Nudie Beach trail is posted as a moderate hike but don't be fooled. It is very difficult and exhausting.
Fitzroy is a fun way to spend a day away from a lot of the commercialism of Cairns.

Absolutely loved this island. It was first decent day after cyclone and still a bit choppy so we settled for Fitzroy Island in case we didn't get chance to go out to the reef. We soon discovered that this is no 'just in case' place.
45 minute boat trip, using larger boat for transfer as still a bit choppy.
There is a get-away resort where we discovered we could have booked a few nights in. Apparently locals chill out here. I think they are holding out on tourists!
Our package included use of sea kayaks, stand boards, snorkels and a good pack lunch which we collected from the shack to the right as we left the boat. You can be as active or laid back as you want.
We only had the chance to explore a couple of walks; up to the secret garden and a trek along to Nudey beach which was more challenging over large boulders and rough paths. Worth the trek though.
Other paths round to the lighthouse would have taken too long, eating into our other exploits but maybe next time we will stay on the island for a couple of nights! Wishful (hopeful) thinking.
Tip: diving shoes or some foot protection would be good as washed up dead coral is hard on the feet getting in and out of surf.

We walked to Nudey Beach (nude in name only). All walks are for moderately fit walkers so make sure you wear good walking shoes. The walk to the lighthouse and summit is very steep along an old road but well worth the effort. Take water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a camera. No toilets on walk so use before leaving. We visited the Cairns Turtle rescue centre. Our guide Jen was very informative and very enthusiastic about the project. Well worth the $5.50 donation admission price.

Loved the 3 walks and were glad we took our hiking sticks as the steep walk up to the lighthouse was a challenge for us (both 70+) especially in the wind and rain. Plenty of interesting bird life and vegetation plus the WW11 relics on the way.
