“Totally undiscovered holiday destination - shhhhhhh keep it quiet!!”
Reviewed October 27, 2010

Well our trip was a last minute decision, and even a last minute change to include Fitzroy Island. What a great 2 nights and 3 full days!!

The ferry from Cairns took 45 minutes and had us at Fitzroy reception around 11am and we were able to check straight in. The day we left we had full access to facilities even after checkout (we arranged a 12 noon late check out). The ferry left at 4.30pm, so we had 3 full days.

We had one of the "Resort Studio" rooms - a nicely setout room but without any ocean view. The other rooms were comparably more expensive than the one we selected (ours was $137 pn and other rooms/suites/cabins around $100 more pn).

The manager told us that he was project managing the re-opening of the resort (about 20 weeks open now) and it had been closed for the prior 18 months. There is work been done on the island with no disturbance to us or other guests. A new day centre is being built for day trippers.

Snorkelling off the beach at the steps of the resort.
Large pool and swim-up bar
Great staff
Fabulous quality food - although the menu included almost no vegetables and some items were repeated in several dishes (eg identical salads, steak sandwich prepared using a bagette that was also used for the BLY Bagette), the choice not overly extensive and could become repetitive after more than a few days stay. But everything superbly cooked and nice indoor or verandah or terrace views. Book the corner table for the best evening/sunset view for dinner!!
There is a small shop with items including alcohol, brekky items etc. This can be used by those who chose to camp on the island and allows an alternative to the restaurant.
Free board games available at reception

Throw away your mobile phone - or stand at reception or at the pier to get reception (dodgey even then in bad weather) - but aren't you on holiday?? No guest internet access but that's island life.

A fantastic undiscovered treasure!!! Go there but dont tell anyone!!!

Enjoy

We stayed at the Fitzroy Island Resort for my 30th Birthday in October this year and I just wanted to let everyone know how fantastic it was!

After contemplating staying in the city at a nice resort with a poolbar we ended up staying on Fitzroy Island and it was sooo worth it. Glad we changed our minds. It was even raining dogs and cats and not even that could put a dampner on our stay. And I must admit I did have to make 3 phone calls to book the transfers with sunlover and the guy at the reception wasnt someone that would go above and beyond to provide your every need but other than that.. perfect.

We started off by checking into our room which was ultra modern with croc vinyl & timber furnishings, comfy leather lounger, flatscreen, barfridge & necessities, really comfy bed & pillows for a good night sleep and beautiful black marble bathroom with rain shower!

Then we swam around at the beach with a couple of drinks, which is mostly coral.. just beautiful. It sounds like windchimes when the tides up. We had a bit of a fish (its a bit of a well kept secret for all you fishing fenatics!) After that we hit the poolbar which even in the pouring rain was great! Their pool is a really good size so the kids were down the other end and we had the bali hut and sunloungers all to ourselves. Rowan the bar man was fantastic too!

Dinner was unbelievable.. we had steak and nannygai and oh my god... we have dined at many award winning restraunts but the chef here beat them hands down. And the service we recieved from the staff was fantastic. Buddy was a real standout at the resort and went above and beyond to please. For example.. We wanted oysters with cheese (not on the menu and most restraunts would just say no we dont do that..) but Buddy made everything possible and they were delicious!

It was very romantic at night. Its out of the main tourist stream and is lovely and quiet. Surrounded by the tropical inspired resort with large open timber foyer all lit up at night looked great.. and the pool. Take a walk out to the jetty at night too if you get the chance you see lots of fantastic fish.. the schools of bait fish were still there and there were some spectacular looking lion fish swimming around lit up in the lights at night.

Had the best sleep for our whole holiday too with the ultra comfy bed and pillows. (Being used to our double pillow top often I find the resort beds/pillows uncomfortable). The only problem being that you have to check out at 10am! Luckily they have hot showers, complimentary dryers & towels, comfy tropical lounges & a store room for the rest of the day.

So for our second day we wanted a bit of adventure and decided to do a snorkelling expedition. We have both dived, are good swimmers and experienced snorklers and for anyone who is similar we suggest doing a Nudey beach to Welcome bay snorkel! It was stunning. Lots of different corals and I especially loved the purple staghorn coral, big plate corals, brain corals, fluro yellow corals and all the tropical fish were just magic.

After that we had lunch which was just as fantastic as dinner. Plus I was suprised personally by the chef with his creative dessert plate of pear mousse with berry sauce, with icecream and chocolate writing. It was soooo good I cant stop thinking about it and normally I dont like dessert or cakes and have had icecream cake for all my previous birthdays! So it was fantastic! Then we relaxed around the pool and had a bday cocktail until our boat came in to depart back to Cairns. I really could have stayed another night if I had more time. But even if you just go for one night to experience the magic of Fitzroy Island.

I have tried for many years to find another island resort with nice facilities & really good snorkelling straight off the beach and I havent found any yet that beat this! Go and experience it for yourself.. its Cairns' best kept secret!

Fitzroy Island – a pleasant 45 minute catamaran ferry journey from Cairns

We stayed three days/two nights - October 8th to 10th 2010

Weather: warm cloudy with some sunny periods and rain at night 28 deg to 21 deg

We arrived from Cairns onboard the fast catamaran ferry around 11.30 a short 2 minute walk from the wharf to reception and then to see our room which was waiting for us. Wow what a room! Fully air conditioned with beautiful design ceiling fans too. Straight away both my partner and I decided we were going to move to Fitzroy to live! It had a full size stainless modern kitchen; from a full size fridge to a large electric oven, dishwasher draw, plenty of cupboard space; even a small wine rack - a kitchen with the works– very much an up market apartment on an island so very private and cosy.

The kitchen led into the small dining table for four, a lay out of a leather table top and crocodile leather printed chairs. The dining area led to the lounge with a HD wall mounted TV and a nice comfy lounge. Bi-folding glass doors led you onto your own balcony with recliner outdoors setting for two; this too had an entrance to the main bedroom all this with views of the ocean thru the trees, keeping it very private

The bedroom was just wonderful, blackout curtains if you so require a sleep in; it’s all there. The queen size bed, luxurious bedding and comfy, my partner so wanted to take the pillows home with him.

Across from the bedroom was the en-suite bathroom laid out in black marble, a rainfall shower head so nice and relaxing to have and a shower bigger enough for two. Of course with all the trimmings - soft towels, toiletries etc. Even a heated towel rack so you had a dry warm towel every time. I have travelled half way around the world and never have seen one in any other hotel room.

All this with an ocean view; we had the Ocean Suite and it was a definite winner in our books, so if your budget allows, spend just a little more for the Ocean Suite; you’ll see the difference once you are there.

What to do on the island……..even with the overcast weather we had, plenty was to be had and done. I counted three different beaches to stroll too. The main beach outside the front of the resort had unlimited snorkelling, swimming, kayaking and even a leisurely stroll to the old light house which really does work up an appetite for food.

And speaking of food…..it was delicious; my partner said the food was “to die for”! Plenty for breakfast with a buffet to suite your style or dietary needs. Lunch can be around the pool, at the restaurant or just something quick from the small supermarket at the resort. Dinner in the open restaurant or outside on the veranda under the tropical sky was accompanied with a fantastic menu. Along with background music by a strumming guitar and singer – made for a very romantic atmosphere.

We stayed for two nights and could quite have stayed for at least a month or two….and that’s without even thinking of what we would have missed on the mainland. The staff could not do enough to make our stay fabulous, and a special thank you to Amy who made ever meal we had a pleasure to dine in at the restaurant

The late ferry departure at 4.30 pm made it a lovely relaxing 3 days. Even though you check out at 10am, there are fresh water showers to be had by ex-guests before you depart.

I have only one common phrase for Fitzroy Island and that is…..AWESOME ---- Bev and Nathan O’Brien

stayed at Fitzroy Island 04/10/10 - 07/10/10.
The staff were wonderful particularly Pheobe and Buddy, they made us feel very welcome and comfortable during our stay.
I also have to say that the food was lovely, a credit to the chef!
We stayed in a 2 bedroom beach cabin and the views and peaceful serenity was brilliant!
Lot's to do here including amazing snorkeling, kids loved the jumping trampoline, great walks, pool is exceptional, board games, table tennis and a fantastic cinema.
I will definitely come back and stay at this resort again.

Unfortunately arrived and had two bad experiences: room not ready for four hours; and a boat load of 300 day trippers taking over the resort and the banquest luncheon. We were happy to wait for our room but a lot of other guests were not. We went to the beach, swam in the pool and were offered complementary drinks at the poolside bar. Our lunch was not so pleasant as we were "competing" with the daytrippers. When they left later that day we got to appreciate the resort in peace and quiet. The rooms are very comfortable and having the children next door worked really well for us. There is a fully equiped kitchen but no pots and pans to cook with, besides which the store has limited supplies to cook a meal from. We were happy to eat at the restauarnt and loved every meal. The food was fresh, flavoursome and there was plenty of it! The breakfasts are excellent too. The island is easy to explore but the walk to the lighthouse and summit is quite steep and we don't recommend walking up it with wet togs and thongs (like our kids did!). There is plenty of fish and beautiful coral. The kayak trip to Little Fitzroy is a must but strong winds prevented us getting all the way to Little Fitzroy. We spent time snorkelling while our guide towed the kayaks - beautiful! Also took a trip to the outer reef which is highly recommended to see better colourful corals and fish. At the resort the kids were happy to spend time on the water trampoline - one day they spent all afternoon on, meeting other kids and having a great time. The staff were very friendly and helpful and explained that it is still early days - official opening is in late Nov. when the Tavern should be built - this is where day trippers will spend time. There are plans to the resort to manage the campground and maybe make a backpackers accommodation.

We have just returned from 4 nights on this beautiful island. Excellent safe snorkelling on a fascinating coral beach and fabulous rainforest walks with guided by traditional owners. Beachfront cabins were small but beautifully located, a quiet and peaceful haven for relaxation. The highlight of our stay.
The resort and its facilities however are another story. Unfinished and with staff who appear inexperienced and uncertain. There was no greeting on our arrival and no information forthcoming about the resort facilities. Someone turned up to help us with our luggage and while he was was friendly enough, did not seem to have much idea about where things were located, restaurant opening times etc. There was no map or info in the rooms and the girl on reception, in response to our query, actually told us that bookings were not required for dinner when that was not the case! The restuarant food while fresh and nicely presented, was pedestrian, expensive, no vegetarian options and with a very oirdanary wine list. If you want wine by the glass there is one choice only!
There is an attractive pool ( with broken mosaic tiles!) and the usual swim up bar . If you're after a cappucino that will set you back $5.00. The breakfast buffet includes instant coffee only which is a bit rich.
There is a comfortable cinema with current movies on offer , however staff seem to have had some difficulty operating the equipment (or else it needed servicing??) so you may or may not get to see a movie depending on whether or not there's a staff member around who knows what to do!
This is not a very eco aware island, sadly, I was dismayed by the number of cigarette butts, drink cans, stubbies etc littering the beach but this may well reflect on the guests? Perhaps management need to be more stringent about driving the message home to guests about the dangers of litter to wildlife and the environment?
To be fair....... we now understand that the current ownership and management of the resort have been in place for only 20 weeks and are working to improve facilities. The resort had prior been in the hands of receivers after a major cost blow out by the previous developers. With the hope that some things will change for the better this resort could be a place to which one wishes to return. In the meantime the cost of the resort accomodation should reflect the current average standard ( keeping in mind that the surroundings are far from average!!!)

We spent three nights at the Fitzroy Island Resort in late August, and overall had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Good points first: The young, enthusiastic staff were without exception friendly and helpful, and went out of their way to meet our needs. The food in the restaurant is excellent (though we were surprised by the absence of real coffee at breakfast, given the high caliber of the rest of the meal). As rookie snorkelers we were very impressed with the wide array of coral and fish around the rocks in Welcome Bay. Rooms are large and comfortably furnished, though the gray marble/brown leather decor felt a bit cold at first.

Less good points: The "two-bedroom suites" actually comprise a one-bedroom suite and a completely separate bedroom with no connecting doors, which is OK if you're traveling with parents or friends, but not so good with children. Both open off a small hallway, which has a door to the main corridor that can be shut but not locked; unfortunately there was no handle on the inside of this door in our suite, so once it was shut there was no way of opening it again from the inside other than pulling on the tiny chains at the bottom used to hook it open. This was only one of several small points highlighting the fact that the resort is still a bit unfinished; others included no information in rooms on things like how to operate the telephones, etc. (even the receptionist couldn't tell us what number to dial to call reception!), the lack of hooks to which to attach the curtain ties, and the missing washing machine/dryer in my in-laws' suite (our suite had these installed, but theirs had only an empty cupboard). The worst thing about our stay was the final night, when a loud, rhythmical humming started up above our bedroom ceiling - we finally had to resort to dragging the mattress into the living room in order to get some sleep. Maintenance staff promised to investigate and fix it when we reported it in the morning, but it was still going on when we checked out that afternoon.

Given the energy and commitment of the staff, I'm sure all these issues will be resolved sooner rather than later. The resort is already a great place for a family holiday, and will be even better when it's completely finished.
