“Beautiful, relaxing island holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2013 via mobile

Fitzroy island is a beautiful, peaceful island and the resort is excellent. We had a one bedroom ocean view, would highly recommend upgrading to this at least. Sitting on the balcony watching sunset is wonderful. However, there is the sound issue. You can hear every movement of the people above which becomes quite distracting. Not sure if carpets or rugs would solve this but might help. Wasn't impressed with foxy's bbq buffet, but the burgers there were excellent. The main restaurant, zephyrs, was very good food and service. I'd suggest doing the turtle tour, for minimal money seeing these gorgeous creatures is worth it. Overall, loved this island getaway and would highly recommend it to most people!

stayed here last week for 4 nights. Beautiful spot, beautiful rooms (stayed in ocean suite family) The only complaint I would have is the shop! They really have to get their act together. We were a family of six and eating out every night just wasn't an option for us. The day we got there couldn't get bread or eggs. The day before we left couldn't get bread again. Ate at Foxy's a couple of times very nice. Didn't try the main resturant as that would have blown the budget. A carton of eggs and a loaf of bread was $12. I was intending to bring food but our driver dropped us off too far to go back to shops. Walked to Nudey Beach...havn't done that for over 23 years ...but I made it considering a hip replacement 9 months ago. The fish were beautiful great snorkeling. Only other little complaint was the cleaning staff chatting and laughing outside your room when you trying to sleep in and insulation from above floors paper thin. Well worth the trip though compared to other islands will go again.

Have just spent a week here for the dance festival. Had a great ocean view room with a great kitchen. Breakfast and lunch options could be improved by increasing the variety of stock in the general stores and you did not have to lunch at Foxy's cafe or have breakfast in the hotel.
Magnificent views from the Summit walk, but you need to bit fit.

Had not been to the island for 20 years and went there with very low expectations. What a wonderful surprise was waiting. After a quick 45 minute fast cat trip from Cairns, we were greeted by a beautiful new modern resort with lovely accommodation, excellent resort facilities and plenty to do. The walks to Nudee Beach, the lighthouse and just walks on the beach are beautiful and a must. The sun always seems to shine over the island and the water abounds with reefs, and clear beautiful water. Visit, and you will be rewarded

I stayed here by myself with 60 other people for a Latin Dance Festival for 2 nights in a basic single room - Fri and Sat night. Island (45min boat trip) is beautiful with some nice beaches (although the Resorts beach is pebbles in 75% of locations), some great scenic walks (so I was told by friends) and snorkeling quite good (although visibility was only approx 2feet when we were there.) Hotel room was spacious, clean and nice. Hotel activities were good with very flexible dive instructors (offered to take just me at any time and anywhere) and nice looking day trips and fishing trips - although I didn't get the chance to do any. Pool area and swim up bar are also good. Only negatives would be the beach being mostly pebbles, the cocktail menu being limited and all girly drinks and it being very limited in things to do at night - not many people at the bar. All up though, was a reasonably priced hotel for a tropical island getaway.

We have just reached the mainland after a magnificent three day; two night stay camping in the campground on the island.

I had read some negative reviews about the camping but decided to give it a go and I am so glad we did. Everyone on the island was super helpful and friendly. The staff on the islands ferry over were also very friendly.

I cannot speak for the countless other companies that run tours to the island, however, I can recommend the resorts ferry. All the crew were helpful and friendly and arranged our luggage and a comfortable trip. Our baggage was in a cage on the upper deck, under cover and free from the elements, ensuring you arrive with dry belongings. I had read that your luggage gets wet and there is nowhere to sit; this is completely untrue!

Upon arrival at the island we were greeted by friendly staff at the reception and paid for our return transfers and camp sight. I would recommend you pay on arrival as the prices are cheaper than any 'deal' you will receive on the mainland.

We had lunch the first day at Foxy's and had read that it was 'expensive'; well, for an island it is actually quite cheap. We paid $13.50 for a lunch wrap each, with ham, swiss chesse, tomato lettuce etc and a side of salad and chips! Pretty cheap! Cairns brews 'wicked' cider and it is $5 on the island a great refreshing drink and not at all overpriced in comparison with pub prices on the main land.

We hired a double kayak each for $20 an hour but got 2 hours for it and had a ball. Snorkel gear is $15 per adult and $8 per child. I would steer clear of the 'package' deals offered on the mainland as they are a complete rip off and a joke! Just wait til you get there. You can hire a stand up paddle board for $20/h too. Glass bottom boat tours are $25 per adult and $10 per child and I would highly recommend the Turtle Rehab tour $2.20 per child and $5.50 per adult.

On the second day my daughter awoke with an incredibly painful ear, (9), crying and unable to settle I went to reception, they had a first aid room, called the flying doctors for advise then arranged a free transfer to the mainland to see a dr where they had already arranged an appointment for us. We got back to Cairns and the Dr surgery was packed and we walked straight in! They go above and beyond to ensure you are looked after.

I read reviews stating the campers are treated as second class??? I didn't have this at all. We used the resort facilities, but perhaps we are not rude and obnoxious so did not draw attention to ourselves?!

We did every walk on the island and would highly recommend the summit, however, you will need hiking shoes. We had hiking shoes and did it comfortably in an hour, but saw people heading up in thongs and wondered what they were thinking! It is a hike, not a walk, it is tough in places but my 7 year old and I did it with a few photo breaks in between.

It is an absolutely beautiful island with very friendly staff and a top notch resort. Highly recommended. I think it is Cairn's best kept secret.

Room Tip: We camped and loved it. The showers are cold but there are warm ones under the cinema... shhhhhhhhh...

Fitzroy Island is a bit of a conundrum. In theory it should be idyllic but alas it isn't. The boat journey from the mainland is great and as you approach the island, it looks impressive. Sadly, unless your room has a sea view, you will be in a small, almost claustrophobic room with no real direct light. We immediately asked for a bigger room and thankfully, they were able to accommodate us.
I thought the food was excellent, particularly in the main restaurant and all the staff, without exception were excellent.
One thing travelers should be wary of, is the snorkeling trip that they offer further onto the barrier reef. Firstly, the guy that you have to speak to book it, was extremely unhelpful and wasn't prepared to give too much away. I can probably see why now, as the boat trip out was the worst I have ever encountered. 90% of the guests were sick and the crew maintained a healthy supply of bags. They suggested at the start of the trip if we wanted to buy 2 sea sickness tablets, they would cost $4 but they hadn't got any with them!
It is a beautiful island but it just needs a bit of an overhaul in terms of paint, furniture, etc and it could be spectacular.
