We had an awesome time on fitzroy island, it offered great value for money & we found it to be child friendly. Numerous options with activities for both young & old as well as various eating options. Will definitely return.

Hummm.... Our first impression was they are not very organized.
When we got to the dock on the mainland, the pier they told us to go to was wrong and we had a lot of luggage with us, so it was a big drag trying to find them. The sign they put at the pier was not very helpful and no one was around to ask where the new pier was, so we did a lot of running back and forth to the main terminal to get info about our boat. It should have had more details. They only have one boat a day so give yourselves time to find out where you need to be then drag your luggage to the boat.
There were a few things that bugged us about this place. No internet, if you want to check on a flight or just email , you can't. The breakfast included package was a little confusing in the dinning room. I didn't like the amount of boats that pull up each day around breakfast time and then again in the afternoon.Lots of day visitors, so it feels like there are a lot more people staying there. Large groups walking on the beach. Lots of locals with their families on the weekends. The campers also are in the restaurants and on the beaches and at the one small pool. No pool service, that's bad. The towels are ugly. This resort is just ok not great for the GBR area. The good things , the food was ok for 1 or 2 nights in the main restaurant, but a limited menu if you are there 3 or 4 nights. The bar food was much better. The staff are nice, the dive shop staff was great. Make sure to buy a cheap stinger suit on the mainland if you are there between Nov. and March or you must rent one each day for $10. The hikes were nice but even that could have been marked and nicer. The beach in some places has coral so it's hard on your feet, bring water shoes. The snorkeling was just ok, not great. To much boat ankering and it's destroyed the coral. To bad!
Even the day trip to the GBR on the "Sea Kisser" boat, wasn't great. My husband went diving and we've dove all over the world, the guide was this young guy and he was touching things and sometimes he's bump into the coral, not very professional. The tanks were very small so you can't stay down long. The boat was not very roomy, no place to spread out, they pack you in like sardines , not fun on a hot day.

Room Tip: Other trip advisor's said ask for the upper rooms less noise. They were right. we had 214

Dear enjojo,

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We appreciate your feed back as it allows us to understand how guests perceive the property and ultimately, improve wherever possible in future. I'm disappointed to hear we did not exceed your expectations on this occasion. We have taken this feedback on board and I've made comment to some of your key concerns below...

a) Confusion with the Boat Transfer from Cairns to Fitzroy - There are currently 2x Transfers per day that operate from Cairns to Fitzroy Island which operate at 07:30am & 02:00pm on our recently acquired vessel "Fitzroy Island.com". The vessel is one of the fastest in the fleet and capable of transferring allot more guests than our previous boat, in the comfort of a fully air-conditioned cabin. The new vessels' size has required us to change the location of its departure from the Reef Fleet terminal in Cairns. To minimise confusion we have recently implemented procedures to ensure the launch destination is clearly marked and that staff are available to assist guests with the transfer of luggage along the wharf. Please accept our apologies that you found the ferry difficult to find. I'm sure your experience would be completely different the next time you travel to the property.

b) Internet - We fully appreciate your frustration here and are currently in the final stages of developing our own Internet Kiosk that will be available to guests in the not to distant future. In the interim however, our friendly reception staff are only too happy to assist with online check in's and boarding pass retrieval if required

c) Day Trip & Camping Guests - The Resort has strict policies on all Day Trip and camping guests which & we can assure you they are not permitted in the Resort pool. If our guests have any concerns or queries with regard to this we are only too happy to assist and rectify immediately if raised with our Front Office supervisors or management whilst the matter is occurring.

enjojo, we do hope you return to Fitzroy Island in future.

Best Regards

Fitzroy Island Resort makes for a very enjoyable getaway to this picturesque tropical island nestled between Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. It is a great place to relax and take in the tropical atmosphere by the crystal clear waters of the Pacific. The resort restaurant serves great meals with ocean views. Snorkeling from the coral covered beach gives you a taste of what the Great Barrier Reef has to offer. There are also a handful of walks through the national park to the lighthouse, secret garden, and mountain summit.

Room was great, modern, very clean and spacious. Enjoyed having the kitchen facilities as we stayed for 5 nights so didn't want to have to eat at the restaurants for every meal. We found there was enough to do at the island to keep us occupied (walks, kayaking etc) as well as enjoying plenty of time at the beach and swimming which was what we wanted to do. While the beaches off Port Douglas & Cairns were un-swimmable due to it being stinger season, the beaches around Fitzroy island were perfectly safe. We were quite disappointed with the Dive trip that we organised through the resort's Dive shop who book through Cairns Dive Centre. The snorkeling and diving on the part of the Great Barrier Reef we were taken to was very underwhelming, the reef itself looked like it was dying, not very colourful at all and variety of sea life was not as good as we hoped or had experienced in Fiji. I'm sure there are other parts of Great Barrier which are amazing though. I also agree with other reviews which state that more could be done to make this resort amazing as there were quite a few things around the place that looked unfinished or in need of fixing. Overall it was a great stay and we loved the beaches and natural surroundings that the island had to offer.

Dear Alex H,

Thanks for your review. We are really pleased your stay was relaxing and over all enjoyable.

The Resort is an amazing destination and your comments with regard to its’ potential are something totally agree with. The Resort has been operational for approximately three years now after a complete refurbishment to existing buildings that were dormant for many years and allot of facilities being built from the ground up. There big plans are in place to continue to evolve the property into the future so please "watch this space."

I have also noted your comments with relation to the Dive Shop and location chosen for tours. Depending on weather and the time of year, locations for snorkelling and dive tours will vary to ensure the safety of guests at all times. The Dive shop is currently operated by a third party however we will pass your feedback on accordingly.

We do look forward to welcoming you back to Fitzroy Island Resort in Future.

Best Regards

Functional resort hotel, with a fantastic view and lovely snorkeling on hand. Accommodation was great, catering to all budgets - camping, luxury, etc..

We stayed in an Ocean front 1 bedroom suite , which we later found to be more than we needed and an over-kill. This type of accommodation is only useful (we think) to families with children. A double room is more than sufficient for a couple. We never used the in-suite cooking amenities.

Food on the resort is reasonably priced we thought, and therefore, one could eat at any of the 2 catering premises on the island.

We stayed 3 nights. This turned out to be excessive for what the island has to offer, except one wants to totally rest. We would have much preferred to stay 1night, 2 days at Fitzroy and then spend the rest of our 2days visiting Cairns. As it turned out we "wasted" 3days holed up on the island, without access to internet, and not much to do except lounge after seeing/doing everything there was to do. Which in itself it not bad, but we would have rather visited Cairns and environs. Try to make full/half board arrangements, if available.

Overall, enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: A couple do not need a 1BDR suite. A room is adequate.

Dear GalHappy,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. We appreciate all your comments and in particular the reference to an appropriate length of stay. Our Management team agree that the best amount of time to spend on Island can be a subjective topic. Consequently, we have a variety of packages that incorporate 1 to 4+ night stays that offer guests the chance to engage in a range of activities such as snorkelling, glass bottom boat tours, day tips to the outer reef, kayaking or even just relaxing by the pool. We believe there is something to suit all tastes and preferences.

We do look forward to welcoming you back to Fitzroy Island Resort in Future.

We were travelling from the U.S. and decided that the Great Barrier Reef was a must stop on our trip. After literally hours of research, I settled on Fitzroy Island, where we stayed for four nights. Just the idea of staying on a "private island" near the reef was too exciting. After checking Lizard Island and its $7,000 price tag for 3 nights, the $900 we spent for a ocean suite was a steal. The room was big, bright and comfortable with a nicely appointment kitchen (full-size fridge, oven, stove top, dishwasher), small dining area, comfy living room area, a separate bedroom and more than adequate bathroom. Our favorite spot? The balcony overlooking the foliage and ocean beyond.

We did the glass bottom boat ride and the dive center set us up with a day trip for snorkeling to the outer reef, which was a lot of fun. One day, we walked to Nudey beach and for the first little while had the whole beach to ourselves -- what a beautiful, magical spot. The water wasn't as clear as I thought it would be, but still very lovely to swim. Another day we made the walk to the lighthouse. This walk was a bit harder than I thought it would be with VERY steep hills, but it was so worth it to see the view from the lighthouse. Again, we were the only ones up there at the time and it seemed as if we were the only two people in the world. Very peaceful, beautiful.

The only slight hiccup was finding the ferry to the island when we first arrived in Cairns. They had changed the location of the slip and the directions were not clear at all. luckily, I bumped into a woman who called the island to get more instructions. I understand the reviews that say that it is "good" but could be "great." However, compared to its outrageously pricey competition, good was more than fine with us.

Room Tip: Ocean suites are the way to go. Floors 2 and 3 are the best.

My sister and I have just come back from a wonderful 3 days/2 nights on Fitzroy Island, just 45 minutes by ferry from Cairns. We stayed in an Ocean Suite at the only resort on the island, Fitzroy Island Resort. The second floor suite was more than adequate, with a small kitchen, which was fully self contained, a washing machine and dryer and a great balcony overlooking the ocean. Perfect for sharing a cold wine as the sun went down. The swimming pool was great, as was the ocean swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and glass bottom boat.
We were very impressed by the meals at Zephyr and Foxys Bar/ restaurant. Great prices for food and alcohol.
The staff were also excellent.
We definately recommend this Resort.

Room Tip: Specify a room with unrestricted ocean views.
