Went over to Fitzroy island resort during the easter break and had the most amazing time , everything from the watersports to the service , the restaurant , the scenery , and especially the room

We got a room with an ocean view , everything from the amazing bedroom to the living room to the balcony and quality showers was a definite tick of approval , it was hard to fault this place simply because this is the only resort on the island and fairly new , everything was great !

Great beaches and walks. You can go snorkeling straight out the front and follow the edge of the reef and there are baracuda, baitfish, turtles and lot's of cool things to see. Snorkel around any of the rock areas and there's plenty to see re coral and reef fish. I was there for a week and I had only scratched the surface of diving/snorkelling opportunities! Renaldo at the CDC Dive Centre gave my wife and I exceptional service, it did not matter how busy it got (and it got buuuusy) he was always happy to help out and nothing was a problem. He and Kerry are instructors of the highest calibre and have the perfect mix of passion and professionalism. A definite highlight of my time on the island! Snorkelling tip – if it’s poor visibility at one place on the island, take a stroll to another beach (or different end of the main beach), it varies a bit but there’s usually fairly good visibility snorkelling not too far away.

The walks are pleasant and the summit is a good test of the ol’ cardio!

Love the open feel of the foyer area and sitting outside overlooking the bay for dinner and breakfast. The room we had "Ocean Suite" is worth the extra. We were there 6 nights and it was beautiful watching the sunset from the balcony. If you are going to be there a few days and are spending little time in your room (except at night) the cheaper ones are fine. Sitting on the beach watching the sun go down is just as good!
Good food, but limited choice and would suggest bringing over nibblies etc if your staying for more than a weekend. Breakfast buffet was really good! There was a stove, hotplates etc in our room but no pots/pans etc and was told these facilities were not available to be used. The "general store" had limited supplies, but hey, it's an island.

It is new and will be interested to see how it comes along, I hope it doesn’t turn into a “party” resort through necessity. One way to avoid that is to support it now, and there are some fantastic deals going.

We are a cairns family who have travelled dunk and Hamilton islands multiple times previously and we have thoroughly enjoyed our very long weekend on fitzroy island.  We travelled with two children aged 2 and 3 .  We had a great room (1brm suite) with beautiful view large room with a full kitchen.
This is a smaller establishment than dunk or Hamilton islands the benefits are much friendlier service (thank you Jim -entertainment man, fish feeding friend of our kids and general resort pr manager, Kylie one of the best front office team we have ever encountered and Luke cocktail guru!!). Because it is a smaller island resort it is also quieter - this is like an island resort under the radar of most people an untouched beauty but likely not for long if the word of mouth in cairns is any indication!
The smaller side means less dining options however the main restaurant and foxy's offer great menu plus excellent home made specials which change daily and the pricing is cairns local making it much more affordable than Hamilton or Dunk from this perspective.
We enjoyed three great walks two easy to nudey beach and the secret garden walk which took less than an hour and both our kids managed on their own and the awesome summit walk which round trip including the lighthouse took three hours but our three year old walked the whole way ( he is amazing) and our two year old walked half of!!!
Tips bring lifejackets for the kids under six.
We found out that raging thunder who run the watersports dont have life jackets suitable for kids of our ages which meant we couldnt go kayaking which we were disappointed about but will bring our own next time.  whilst water activities are charged they are very reasonable and clearly the accommodation charge is a lot less than any other island so you can user pay the items you do And don't want.
There is a great free cinema which Kylie and Jim offered to put movies on anytime for our kids, there is a kids playroom from which we borrowed a kiddie sofa from so one of ours could have a day sleep at foxy's whilst we enjoyed lunch and a drink.
For those with young kids no playground so bring some activities like soccer balls and cricket etc there is a great lawned area to play on, a dedicated play room for little ones with a few basic toys and a pay as you go play room with air hockey and coin operated games.
Talking to Jim we learned the new owner has great plans for creating more facilities on the island which sound amazing and very Appealing for children.
We have telstra connection on our phones and had at least two bars most places within the resort.
We own hospitality businesses so can be pretty fussy -  but very understanding of the ins and outs of running establishments such as this.  At then end of the day to us five star is the room we stay in and the friendliness of the team who run the place.  If you take the time to say hello and chat the the fitzroy team you will find yourself feeling part of the family very quickly, making the whole experience brilliant and any little issues which will occur wherever you go just seem to be soaked up by island time.....perfect .......we will be back very very soon fitzroy island thanks to all of the team.

then this is a good spot for a few days.

We started here for two nights on arrival into Cairns for some where to just relax at the beginning of our holiday.
Accommodation was excellent, all our meals good, especailly dinners which were outstanding.
However it was obvious the occupancy was quite low which we presume is why a number of services were not available, such as the pool bar etc which was dissapointing. There could be more activities made available, as otherwise there is not much to do here other than relax and swim, and a couple of nice walks. And unfortunately we did not have the best weather but still had a lovely stay.

Beautiful location and comfortable well appointed accommodation. Good food and generous portions. Friendly service. Few things that need some work - only having Foxy's (with a limited fast food style menu - BLTs, burgers etc) for lunch is not ideal. The pool bar was not open because of low occupancy (if you pay the service should be available in my view). The water sports operator (not sure if its attached to the resort) also charges heavily for the various activities available including snorkling gear rental and $20 for an hour with a kayak - this is not my experience in other tropical island locations where such things are included.

This is the most confused resort/hotel I have ever stayed in. Aspects were fantastic. The island is beautiful, the hotel is new and very clean. We also found the staff extremely friendly, particularly some of the restaurant staff. However, it the resort doesn't seem clear as to who their target clientele is and it looks like it needs a little bit more work setting up some services.

The biggest issue is that there is really limited food options. There is only one place to get lunch - which is an adjacent restaurant called Foxy's - however - there is no capacity to order food at the resort itself between breakfast and dinner - and you can't eat near the pool at all. There is a shop which is a bit useful - however would strongly recommend you bring over a stack of food. The restaurant food was v nice and given it is an island resort pretty reasonably priced (it is pricey - but we expected that). We also found breakfast very very good.

The pool has a fabulous location and is really relaxing, alas it appears badly designed - as there is very little room to sit near the pool and the deck chairs were generally full. Not clear whether they were resort guests or day trippers - however - a bit disappointing. Also the pool is not heated so very chilly and everyone that got in complained about that and got out pretty quickly.

We had a very small room out the back - and it was very new and clean, albeit very small. We didn't really spend much time in it - and I agree with the reviewer that suggested you pay extra for a room with a view. Checkin is chaos - despite the hotel undoubtedly knowing how many people were arriving on the ferry - they had one person on check in and no idea which people could check in and which couldn't - so you were just told to wait without anyone coming back to you or an estimated time frame. If they could give you an ETA that would be sufficient.

Finally - just a bit of a warning - the resort seems to sell off extra rooms extremely cheaply in Cairns for half the price they are sold for on last minute. This means (at least on the weekend we were there) the resort has a lot of very big drinking young people (a lot of them were also camping - but using the resort facilities) and this makes the resort a bit less family friendly and not really great for slightly older couples. It also means that there are less places to go on the island if you don't want to mix with really drunk people. That said, we found we could avoid them - except near the pool - and we couldn't hear any noise once we were in our room.

Despite all of the above - we really enjoyed all our stay and we were pleased we stayed there - I just think it is best if people are forearmed!

Firstly I agree with the review, "Good could be Great"..Firstly let me say , after the initial shock of NO internet access, intermittent phone access, no room service, or being able to eat or drink when you like,( due to shop, restaurant and bar opening hours)... I did start to come round,as Heath the receptionist assured me. I found all the staff very helpful, although most of them were brand new, they were full of enthusiasm and happy to help out.
My room was a" rock facing room", which is really not very pleasant, its dark and you cant open the curtains because people walk by litterally right outside the room. Its a shame because the room itself is very nice..When I stayed all the little things that niggled? me were frustrations of staying in 4 or 5 star hotels on mainland, with all the comforts of choice.I think they do rely on the daytrippers and cater to their needs, but if the little things were given to the full time guests who spend heaps on food and drinks, more would come...
If you go, take heaps of food, alcohol, nibblys, cereal, etc... or you will spend heaps, things are Sydney restaurant prices...so breakfeast $25.00 for hot..$12.00 for continental(not bad), but coffee if you dont want to pay for latte etc, is instant...a bit tacky for a 4 star rating., at least have brewed cofee for free.Lunch(at Foxys Bar) is around $18-$22 for burger , etc... and about $20-$30 for dinner...now times 2 people it all adds up...
The food is really good though....
so there you have it...remember, it is the only resort on the island....oh yeh....MAKE SURE YOU TAKE REEF SHOES....it is all coral....

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for beach view room..
