“Huge Drawbacks Undisclosed in Advertising”
Reviewed February 18, 2009

I went to visit with friends who had booked this accommodation from the US. After arriving at the place (in a driving rain) I could see the kinds of problems that went undisclosed to them prior to booking.

The resort's website says "WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE? Temperatures range between 18-24 degrees in the winter months June/July to 28-32 degrees in summer February/March. Any time on Bedarra Island is just beautiful." This failed to disclose that January thru March is cyclone and rainy season in this part of Queensland. Any time on Bedarra ISN'T beautiful, and a partial refund was negotiated because of this falsehood.

The resort is also on the "windward" side of the island. The windward side of any island is going to be windy and uncomfortable, with high surf and dangerous swimming conditions.

The staff was pleasant, but clearly not very well trained in "five star service". The interior had some nice features, but was poorly maintained with some cheap fittings and could have been much cleaner. Tried to contact to the owners but was told that they don't speak to guests.

Finally, the "price" for this resort can be very different based on where you try to book it. Daily rate varied by almost US$500 - at the highest quoted rates you will be extremely disappointed.

East Bedarra is truly a paradise and was a great place for us to spend our honeymoon. The experience is indescribable and so we will do our best... if you are reading this and thinking about planning a trip to East Bedarra, stop thinking and go ahead and book it.

The experience is amazing from the beautiful sunrises to the fabulous sunsets. You can choose to be active or just choose to relax. The accomodations provide the opportunity to completely unplug from daily life activities and to recharge and relax. From the fresh sea breeze that replaces air conditioning to the sound of the ocean waves crashing along the rocks outside your bedroom window each night, you get to experience nature in a way you never have before. Additionally, the accomodations are run with solar power and you bathe, cook and drink fresh spring water from the island itself.

And this review would not be complete without mentioning the owners and the caretakers of the property. The individuals who run East Bedarra as well as Misty Mountains want to ensure that you have the best experience possible while at these locations and they are there to assist you from the day you inquire about the property through the time you leave. Thank you.

And if you are looking for another great experience, check out the Misty Mountains Nature Resort...

  • Liked — The opportunity to unwind and unplug in seclusion.
  • Disliked — Would not change a thing... wish we could have stayed longer...

We were looking for a romantic island honeymoon we found Bedarra over the internet. We fell in love at first sight although we took a risk at that time of year as we heard it was the wet season .
After a bumpy ride on the water taxi, we arrived at a very calm and and beautiful sandy beach. The hosts were waiting on the beach with a bottle of Moet and took our bags, as we made our way with our glasses of champers to the deck. We were blown away by the spectacular views to the other islands and Australia it was like living in a painting.
The oven was working when we arrived, although I have to say that we loved using the weber-q on the deck , where we cooked our first old fashioned but we generally used the outside showers with those roasted chicken and potatoes overlooking the ocean.Later we lay out on the big deck drank more bubbles and watched the stars. We got up VERY late next morning and went straight into the water. no shower, just lunch , more drinks and romance ;-)

we finally worked out that we were there for 3 days, so we decided to get on the paddle skis and paddle around the island, which took us about 1and a half hours as we stopped along the way to discover some of the most beautiful small beaches and caves and the next day it was time to leave the Island. our only complaint was that 4 days was not long enough and I should have listened to my husband who wanted to stay longer!

We loved the beach hut , it was like having a holiday in one of the pacific island burres, very open and natural and everything worked well. The bathroom was a little small and veryspectacular views...we will never forget our days on Bedarra and will be coming back again for our first anniversary next year .

  • Liked — the way we were so close to nature in every way...loved the outdoor showers!

My husband and I stayed at East Bedarra Island for our honeymoon in December 2005. As the previous person wrote, it was a beautiful place in terms of location. the plunge pool was very nice and it looked like a slice of heaven.

All the niceness ended when we entered the bedroom. the sheets and quilt felt weird and when we tried to take the mosquito net from behind the bed all the insects came flying out and attacked us.
We were more shocked to see the bathroom, it was very old and felt like you were in a shed. so all our showers were outside.

During our stay of 6 nights, no one came to clean the property (i was told this was done once a week and could be done during our stay). that didnt happen!

For $660+ per night (not including the food bill) which came at around $2000 for us for the few things we ordered, you would expect the property to be in pristine condition. i also have to agree with the previous person when they wrote that the accommodation looks over used. Given that its rented only 12 weeks of the year (according to the owners) you would expect to have better accommodation.

Overall, we spent most of our days outside snorkelling and paddling etc. Like i said the area is gorgeous however i think some renovations are in order for the accommodation.

I would suggest researching other honeymoon destinations, until the owners advertise that they have renovated.

We stayed at East Bedarra in August 2007, and found the location to be absolutely beautiful - tranquil, private and very 'eco-friendly'. The private rock-pool, open living spaces (incl outdoor shower!) and (effectively) private beach were everything you could wish for in a private beachside retreat. The caretakers were also very friendly and helpful.

By way of background, the retreat is located on the other side of Bedarra Island to the Voyages Bedarra Island Resort. There are only a couple of houses on the island, some of which appear to be available for rent. Of these properties, East Bedarra Island Retreat is the only 'deep waterfront property'. The other properties appear to have pretty much direct access to beaches, but are not located right down on the water. So the retreat is truly unique in this respect.

The main drawback was that the property feels 'over-used'. When you arrive the property looks clean and well maintained. However, during our stay we found that the cupboards were damp and smelt and were not-aired enough. The whole place just needed a really good professional (i.e. 'non-surface') clean. This was very disappointing as we were told that the property is only rented out 12 weeks in a year (this is also stated on the website in the "Rates" section). We expected that the property would be pristine since it was said to be rented out so infrequently. Having stayed there, and cooked and lived in the property, it feels as though it is not cleaned properly in between guests, and therefore feels like it is rented out much more than 12 weeks of the year. Having stayed in comparable properties for comparable (even significantly lower) rates, we were disappointed with the maintenance aspect.

Another (minor) drawback was that the oven didn't work. Normally, this would be a mere inconvenience, but with no shops or restaurants on the island and food pre-ordered (with a delivery charge applying if more food is ordered), it would have been helpful if we were told about this before arrival. We had to use the BBQ for breakfast, lunch and dinner. One day it was raining, and it was not fun cooking outside.

Finally, the snorkelling off the island is what you would expect for the area, i.e some colourful coral, some dead coral. some sea-weed, lots of rocks and no colourful schools of fish. This was also disappointing as we were told that there would be no need to visit the outer reef for snorkelling. But if you have done any other snorkelling in the South Pacific, and expect lots of coral and schools of colourful fish (as it would be fair to expect in the Great Barrier Reef), we highly recommend going to the outer reef with Calypso Dive & Snorkel as it was an excellent experience.

In summary, if some-one were to ask us whether this would be a good place to stay, we would say 'Yes' provided that the maintenance significantly improves. Otherwise, we would recommend researching some of the other properties on the island as the island is beautiful and a lovely place to stay.
