“Great sea views at Aquarius but some problems”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2008

Aquarius on the Beach was recommended by friends. We booked a bay view room and it was located on the fourth floor of this 15-storey beach front high-rise in which every room or apartment has a view of Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island. Our room turned out to be essentially a standard motel room with a narrow balcony and a kitchenette, which comprised a sink, bench, small fridge and convection microwave (no hotplates or oven). We had no complaints about the room although a sliding door would be better than the large hinged door to the balcony, which impinged on space and could not be left ajar on windy days.
The staff were friendly and helpful and we had one free continental breakfast included in the tariff, which fed both of us (we have modest breakfast appetites).
There is a very good, if rather expensive, restaurant next door which has a chargeback option to the hotel, and a very good and equally expensive steakhouse at another hotel nearby. There are less expensive eateries within walking distance. Local attractions such as the Museum of Tropical Queensland and the Magnetic Island ferry are a short drive away.
Our only serious complaint was that the hotel has too few parking spaces for its size, which means that if you drive out to dinner you might not find a space in the hotel grounds on your return and will have to park in the street, as happened to us. The hotel car park is open to the weather, which was fine in July (winter) but could be trying in summer heat. I feel that a four star establishment should offer a good number of undercover parking spaces.

  • Liked — Sea views and proximity to beach
  • Disliked — Limited parking not undercover, large hinged balcony door

We stayed here for 4 nights while checking out Townsville as a place to live. The hotel itself is well positioned within easy walking distance to shops, bars and cafes. Being right on the Strand was a bonus. The room was lovely, obviously refurbished recently. Good value for money, the only gripe I had was that room service was unavailable and the receptionist didn't seem to care! Other than that it was central, clean perfect for our requirements.

My partner and I stayed at the Aquarius in Oct 2007. We had a room at the end of the building and first impressions was WOW! It looked fantastic with the kitchenette and full fridge/freezer, a bath/shower and very modern decor. All the rooms have balconies facing the beach with great views. We arrived late evening so was looking forward to a sleep in. Were woken up by banging and drilling happening right next door in the early morning. Reception just told us that the rooms were privately owned and that they would advise the workers to not start so early. So of course, the next morning they started earlier (around 7am). We rang reception that seemed to not care. We wasted alot of time on this day as we requested to be moved and got so many excuses. They eventually came to the party on moving us and we looked at the room we were going to go to and it was of a lesser standard to what we were already in and was not upgraded. it also had work happening next door to that one as well. After more fluffing around we got a room of the same standard on a higher floor and were vry happy there.
It is very nice accommodation just a shame that work can be done at any time with out any notice. Hopefully by now all the rooms are upgraded.

I stumbled across this site only recently and having stayed in "Aquarius on the Beach" I'd like to recount my experience....
Having booked over the internet based on the photo's & "4 star" rating I was amazed to discover my room - though bearing some similarity to the photo possibly by dint of having been taken 20 years ago - was tiny, there was mould in the bathroom, cockroaches toilet, all the furniture and fittings were shabby & looked like never having been replaced since having been situated in the rooms, there was a smell in the corridors that just defied description, and the air-conditioning wasn't working. Unfortunately, because every other room in the hotel was booked there was no alternative available to me as every hotel in Townsville was booked out that weekend. This in tropical QLD where A/C is not a luxury but a necessity. The lifts were none too reliable either & I decided to take the stairs rather than risk being stuck in a sweatbox for several hours during the height of summer. Also, there is advertising concerning a restaurant in the hotel: there's not and hasn't been for some years judging from my enquiries. The staff and management are not rude so much as they are indifferent to any complaints. An exception to the rule was one of the receptionists: she actually was rude throughout my stay. Security is really non-existent & anyone can walk in off the street late at night & wander the hotel. For the price we paid is was just terrible. For an equivalent amount we could have stayed at Rydges...perhaps it has a lesser view but hopefully fewer cockroaches.

We visited this hotel over a year ago but just found this forum so thought I'd post this report. Hopefully the hotel has improved and upgraded its rooms since then (July 2006). We booked through a travel website and the photos of the room looked good. Upon entering the room, there was a dark brown mouldy stain at the doorway. There were other stains on the carpet in the room, stains in the bathroom, cracked paint, aircon not working properly etc. Very old and run down. The swimming pool did not look enticing, definitely different that the photos.

My husband went to complain and they said we could upgrade to a better room for (of course) a lot more money. We checked out the better room which was recently refurbished and it did look much nicer but I didn't particularly want to pay a lot extra as I thought I had paid enough. I would have expected that room for the price that we did pay. We thought of leaving and looked at other places to stay but there was not a lot available, so ended up staying.

It was very dissappointing as it was rated four stars on the website. When we told them that, they said they had no control over what other websites put down. When we left, I also noticed that there were four stars on the front door. This really should be taken down.

I did write a complaint letter to some Qld tourist authority following our visit which they looked at but nothing happened.

The views and overall location are the best part. If you decide to stay though, know a few things before hand. Each room is "privately owned", so if there is construction going on next door, below you, or above you, reception cannot tell you when it will be done. The loudest grinding noise, accompanied by constant banging, kept us from napping for an entire afternoon. It was so intense I had to speak loudly to my wife so she could hear me. Not much peace and quiet, and not a very concerned staff in this matter. When asked to move to another room, the response was everything short of a "too bad, deal with it" approach, all while she was eating her lunch behind the reception desk- full mouth of food and all. No apology or anything. Not a rude staff, just a very aloof attitude towards guest comfort and concerns. Not recommended for a relaxing time. You won't feel well taken care of, but the views are great.

Not sure how bad this place may have been in the past, but when we were there, we were completly impressed with the value during our stay. Would have stayed longer, but they were just booked out.

Our room had just been renovated, in a modern and very simple style. We enjoyed our suite. It was very roomy and comfortable, with new bedspreads and tasteful, simple decor in relaxing, neutral colors. The view was astounding. We barely saw the staff who kept our room tidy, although they did a fantastic job behind the scenes.

The kitchen was well-equipped, so we could eat in. They have no in-house restaurant as mentioned, but there are so many places outside, and everything's within walking distance. Each day, I felt like getting out amongst it.

We were right next to a great brand-new bar downstairs, although this could potentially be a downside for you if you're not out late - being practically on top of it, the noise carries until about 12 at night, with laughing and the sound of bottles being moved. Definitely good if you like cars, too. Otherwise, yes - the traffic noise may get to you.

Easy access after hours, although it's possible for pretty much anyone to gain access to hallways if that's a problem for you.

Personal photos are here, including a view down to the bar to give you some idea how close it is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spam_al/tags/aquarius/

Sorry, didn't take much of the interior of the room - was a little preoccupied by the view. We loved it, and would definitely recommend it or return again!

  • Liked — The View!
  • Disliked — Maybe the noise on the beachfront... Sometimes it was a little too much, but outside hotel control.
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay here and walk everywhere else. Great for people with kids, because there are heaps of free activities for families on the beach.
